Their engagement belonged to a longstanding marriage alliance between the Zhu clan and the imperial family. Both faced succession struggles against older siblings, and failure by either threatened the other’s future 19.

Dai Mubai fled the empire before her, leaving Zhu Zhuqing to endure pressure from both families. She eventually escaped to find him in Suotuo City, risking pursuit by her eldest sister. When men in black surrounded her in the Star Dou Great Forest and demanded her return, she preferred death to renewed persecution 15 19.

Lin En intervened, but charged heavily for his assistance. Zhu Zhuqing surrendered her remaining valuables and signed IOUs for additional expenses, including a meal. She subsequently hired him to escort her to Suotuo City for another hundred thousand Gold Soul Coins 15 16.
