Background / History

In his previous life, Tang San was a Tang Sect disciple devoted to hidden weapons. He created the sect’s ultimate hidden weapon, the Buddha’s Fury Tang Lotus, and retains knowledge of Tang Sect techniques in his current life 2 6.

At Nuoding Academy’s gates, Tang San encounters Yu Xiaogang and becomes convinced of his expertise. He subsequently becomes Yu Xiaogang’s disciple and lives in Dorm Seven as a work-study student 1 2.

Personality

Tang San places exceptional trust in Yu Xiaogang. He credits his cultivation achievements to his teacher’s guidance and defends his theoretical knowledge despite his low cultivation. Even when he privately disagrees with Yu Xiaogang’s criticism of his devotion to Xiao Wu, he gives an outwardly obedient answer rather than contradicting him 17 20.

His affection for Xiao Wu makes him attentive, financially generous, and fiercely protective. He hands over his Soul Master Subsidy, carries her during their journey, and readily performs errands for her. When Ma Hongjun initially harbors improper intentions toward Xiao Wu, Tang San attacks him so severely that Ma Hongjun later recalls nearly being beaten to death 14 19.

Tang San is proud of his Tang Sect heritage and deeply embarrassed by his fear of dogs. His frustration can become aggression: after Sang Biao frightens him, he regards Wang Sheng’s compulsory dormitory challenge as an opportunity to vent 2. Against Yun Tian, he also overestimates the advantage supplied by his teacher, academy, and Soul Rings, dismissing Yun Tian’s prospects before being decisively overpowered 28.

Fear of Dogs

  • Seeing Sang Biao causes stiffness, cold sweat, panic, and an instinctive retreat using Ghost Shadow Perplexing Track 1.
  • A subsequent encounter leaves him unconscious from fright 2.
  • Yu Xiaogang advises defeating Yun Tian to overcome the fear, prompting Tang San’s first challenge 5.
  • The fear persists after he becomes a Soul Elder, although he attempts to replace his initial panic with confidence in his cultivation 27 28.

Abilities & Skills

Blue Silver Grass

Tang San’s regularly cultivated Martial Soul manifests as grass or thick vines. He credits Yu Xiaogang with enabling him to develop a Martial Soul widely regarded as weak 6 17.

  • First Soul Skill — Blue Silver Entanglement: Sends a thick vine toward a target to entangle it 6.
  • Utility: Uses vines to pull himself out of a wall after Yun Tian punches him into it 28.
  • Demonstrated weakness: Sang Biao’s Ice Wall freezes an attacking vine, allowing Sang Biao to shatter it with a paw 6.
  • Post-treatment change: His connection to surrounding Blue Silver Grass becomes noticeably weaker after consuming the Ginseng King 32.

Clear Sky Hammer

Tang San possesses a second Martial Soul, the Clear Sky Hammer, which manifests as a small iron hammer condensed from black light 7 28.

  • Reveals it alongside the Eight Spider Lances when escalating his confrontation with Yun Tian 28.
  • Remains unable to move under Yun Tian’s Soul Emperor-level pressure despite bringing out both assets 28.
  • After the Ginseng King treatment, the previously weighty Martial Soul feels light, soft, and powerless to him 32.

Ghost Shadow Perplexing Track

A Tang Sect movement technique that Tang San uses both instinctively and in combat 1 6.

  • Activates it automatically while fleeing Sang Biao 1.
  • Uses it to enhance his movement during his first duel with Yun Tian, but still finds Yun Tian faster 6.

Purple Demon Eye

A Tang Sect technique Tang San possesses during his first duel with Yun Tian. Despite having it alongside Ghost Shadow Perplexing Track, he cannot gain the close-combat advantage he expects 6.

Hidden-Weapon Expertise

Tang San retains his previous-life expertise and considers Tang Sect hidden weapons restricted to the sect’s disciples 2 6.

  • Created the Buddha’s Fury Tang Lotus in his previous life 2.
  • Refuses to offer Tang Sect hidden weapons as a wager when seeking a match with Yun Tian 6.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Twenty-Four Moonlit Bridges — A storage belt with twenty-four cubic meters of capacity, given to him by Yu Xiaogang upon accepting him as a disciple. Tang San offers it as a wager, but Yu Xiaogang intervenes and substitutes his own bracelet. Tang San retains the belt and later uses it to unpack at Shrek Academy 5 6 15.
  • Eight Spider Lances — former possession — An External Soul Bone acquired during his third Soul Ring hunt. Eight spider legs emerge from his back when deployed. Yu Xiaogang orders him to conceal them unless absolutely necessary; Yun Tian later forcibly extracts the Soul Bone 25 28.
  • Ginseng King — consumed — Fed to him while unconscious by Yu Xiaogang. It heals his back and raises his rank from thirty-two to thirty-eight, but is one of Yun Tian’s prepared herbs that damage Martial Soul characteristics and consume vitality for short-term gains 30 32.

Relationships

  • Yu Xiaogang — Teacher and principal authority figure. Tang San reveres his knowledge, defends him before his Shrek classmates, and accepts reassurance about his altered Martial Souls because it is attributed to his teacher 6 17 32.
  • Tang Hao — Father and hidden protector. His presence initially discourages Yun Tian from harming Tang San. He later approves the move toward Suotuo City and insists that Xiao Wu accompany Tang San 1 6 13.
  • Xiao Wu — Classmate and romantic interest. Tang San interprets her attention as affection, gives her his subsidy, and prioritizes her comfort. He privately believes Yu Xiaogang does not understand his feelings for her 12 14 20.
  • Yun Tian — Academy acquaintance who becomes an enemy. Defeats Tang San in their first duel, later arranges his abduction, and extracts the Eight Spider Lances 6 27 28.
  • Sang Biao — Yun Tian’s detached Martial Soul and the focus of Tang San’s dog phobia. Frightens him into flight and unconsciousness, then counters his vines during their first match 1 2 6.
  • Oscar — Shrek Academy roommate and close friend. Welcomes Tang San on arrival and later reaches rank thirty around the same time as him 15 20 30.
  • Dai Mubai and Ma Hongjun — Shrek classmates who become close companions. Their regular outings include Tang San, although he waits outside rather than participating in their visits to pleasure establishments 15 16 30.
  • Flender — Shrek Academy dean. Welcomes Tang San as a prodigy, helps recover him after his abduction, and explains his subsequent treatment 15 30 32.
  • Dugu Bo — Abducts Tang San for Yun Tian and delivers him unconscious to the valley containing the Ice and Fire Yin Yang Well 27.
