Background / History
Childhood and Cultivation
Yu Xiaogang is the son of the Blue Lightning Tyrant Dragon Clan’s leader. Before awakening his Martial Soul, he was rammed by a boar and nearly suffered a serious genital injury. The incident left him afraid of pigs until, after obtaining his first Soul Ring, he returned to fight the animal 5 8.
His Martial Soul, Luo Sanpao, outwardly resembles an unusual pig-dog creature rather than the clan’s Blue Lightning Tyrant Dragon. Although Yu Xiaogang regards it as defective, Luo Sanpao is actually a Golden Sacred Dragon cub. Its innate essence, combined with clan resources, enables him to reach rank 29; he nevertheless remains unable to reach rank 30 for much of his life 16 20 33.
Teaching Tang San
At Nuoding Academy’s entrance, Yu Xiaogang intervenes when a gatekeeper obstructs Tang San and the old man accompanying him. Tang San subsequently becomes his disciple, placing great faith in his theoretical knowledge 1 5.
Yu Xiaogang gives Tang San the storage belt Twenty-Four Moonlit Bridges as an apprenticeship gift. During Tang San’s first Soul Ring hunt, he recommends ten-year solitary bamboo for its toughness. Tang Hao, watching secretly, instead places a hundred-year Mandala Snake in their path to prevent his son from taking a ten-year ring 6 7.
When Tang San reveals his fear of Yun Tian’s dog-like Martial Soul, Yu Xiaogang recommends defeating Yun Tian in combat. He draws on his own experience with the boar, but the proposed solution fails when Yun Tian wins their match 5 6.
Pursuit of Yun Tian
Seeing Sang Biao shocks Yu Xiaogang, who had believed Luo Sanpao to be the continent’s only body-detached Martial Soul. Sang Biao’s combat strength convinces him that studying Yun Tian could reveal a cultivation method applicable to himself. He imagines becoming both a powerful cultivator and the teacher of two future Titled Douluos 5 6.
His first recruitment attempt fails because Yun Tian leaves while he is still recounting his accomplishments. Over the following year, he approaches Yun Tian more than a thousand times and is rejected every time. His interest turns vindictive: he privately plans to extract a cultivation method and then kill Yun Tian once he is no longer useful 7 8.
During the academy holidays, Yu Xiaogang confronts Yun Tian again, boasting that Tang San has reached rank 15 and promising to bring Yun Tian to rank 20 by the next semester. Yun Tian instead reveals Soul Grandmaster-level strength, beats him unconscious, and carries him to the Spirit Hall branch dungeon in Nuoding City 8.
Imprisonment and Rescue
In the dungeon, Yu Xiaogang attempts to intimidate three inmates with his rank-29 Soul Power. They overpower him, and Scarface, A Jie, and A Long subject him to repeated sexual assault during a month of captivity. He resolves to survive, prove his theories through Tang San, and seek revenge 9 11 12.
After Tang San returns and searches unsuccessfully for his teacher, Tang Hao locates Yu Xiaogang through spiritual detection. He breaks into the dungeon and rescues him, using Soul Power to suppress his physical weakness so he can walk out 12.
Move to Shrek Academy
Tang Hao supplies Yu Xiaogang with Gold Soul Coins and tells him to leave Nuoding Academy with Tang San. Yu Xiaogang travels separately by luxurious carriage, justifying Tang San and Xiao Wu’s journey on foot as physical training 13 15.
At Shrek Academy, he mistakes Li Yusong’s lack of apparent Soul Power fluctuations for weakness. He demands preferential treatment as Flender’s close friend, insults Li Yusong, and summons Luo Sanpao. Li Yusong responds by striking his mouth and legs with the Dragon Pattern Staff and beating him 15 16.
Yu Xiaogang continues teaching Tang San. When his disciple reaches rank 29 at twelve, he takes the achievement as proof of his instruction. He also warns Tang San to conceal the external Soul Bone acquired during his third Soul Ring hunt 20 25.
Tang San’s Abduction
Near Heaven Dou City, Dugu Bo suppresses the Shrek party with overwhelming pressure and abducts Tang San. Yu Xiaogang is flattened against a stone and loses two teeth. Recognizing that the attacker is beyond their strength, he agrees to seek help from Heaven Dou Royal Academy 27.
The academy’s three board members refuse assistance. Yu Xiaogang, Flender, and Zhao Wuji then search Sunset Forest themselves, eventually finding Tang San with his external Soul Bone removed. Yu Xiaogang spits blood in fury before noticing the ginseng roots Yun Tian has deliberately left nearby 29.
Ginseng King Disaster
Yu Xiaogang brings eight supposed Ginseng Kings back to the Shrek group and selects the largest for himself. When the herbs increase the students’ Soul Power but damage their Martial Souls, he assures them that the changes are temporary 30 31 32.
He stages reluctance before accepting the others’ encouragement to consume his own root, hoping to gain both strength and a reputation for selflessness. In reality, Yun Tian’s preparations burn vitality and damage future potential in exchange for short-term cultivation gains 32.
During absorption, Yu Xiaogang mistakes severe pain for the evolution of his Martial Soul into a Blue Lightning Tyrant Dragon. He ignores Luo Sanpao’s warnings and absorbs the energy faster. Luo Sanpao ultimately expels the harmful energy by exhausting its Golden Sacred Dragon bloodline, saving him at the cost of becoming a genuine pig 33.
The transformation permanently severs the Martial Soul connection needed for the Golden Sacred Dragon fusion. Yu Xiaogang’s cultivation falls from rank 29 to rank 11, and he collapses into grief when his expected dragon manifests as a spotted pig 33.
Appearance
- Hair and face: A distinctive flat-top or crew cut, a full beard, and a weathered face 1 16.
- Clothing: Initially wears black academic robes washed pale 1.
- Mannerisms: Frequently clasps his hands behind his back, looks down his nose at others, and adopts a mysterious, self-assured smile 5 8 16.
- Later injuries: Loses two large yellow teeth when Dugu Bo’s pressure drives his face into a stone 27.
Personality
Yu Xiaogang is intensely proud of his theoretical reputation and expects deference from students and strangers alike. He assumes that becoming his disciple is an irresistible honor, and repeatedly interprets Yun Tian’s actions as signs of submission despite being rejected 7 8 20.
His ambition centers on vindication. He wants Tang San’s success to prove his theories and sees Yun Tian as a route to overcoming his own cultivation limitations. His concern for Tang San coexists with an explicitly instrumental view of him as the person who will establish his reputation 6 7 11.
He is vindictive toward those who refuse or humiliate him. His resentment toward Yun Tian develops into a murder plan, while Heaven Dou Royal Academy’s refusal to help earns his hatred toward its board members 8 29.
Yu Xiaogang carefully manages appearances. He conceals surprise to preserve Tang San’s belief that he is all-knowing, and pretends to hesitate over the Ginseng King so that accepting it will appear selfless. His confidence also fuels disastrous misjudgments: he dismisses Luo Sanpao’s warnings because they contradict the breakthrough he wants to believe is occurring 25 32 33.
Abilities & Skills
Martial Soul Theory and Instruction
Yu Xiaogang teaches cultivation and advises on Soul Rings and rare abilities. Tang San regards his theoretical knowledge as unmatched, though the narrative documents serious errors in his judgment 7 17 32.
- Advises Tang San on overcoming fear through direct confrontation 5.
- Recognizes the importance of Tang San’s external Soul Bone and urges secrecy 25.
- Seeks to derive a cultivation method for body-detached Martial Souls by studying Yun Tian 5 6.
- Incorrectly dismisses the Ginseng Kings’ harmful Martial Soul changes as temporary 32.
- Fails to understand Luo Sanpao’s true nature until its bloodline has already been lost 33.
Luo Sanpao
Luo Sanpao manifests separately from Yu Xiaogang rather than possessing his body. Before its degeneration, it is purple, plump, and resembles both a pig and a dog 16.
- Uses fart-based Soul Skills; their odor lingers on Yu Xiaogang 1.
- Has two hundred-year Soul Rings before the Ginseng King incident 16.
- Can convey thoughts and warnings to its master 33.
- Was fed carrots and given rings from pig-type Soul Beasts rather than dragon-type ones, contributing to its abnormal development 33.
- Sacrifices its remaining dragon bloodline to expel the Ginseng King’s energy, becoming a black-and-blue-spotted pig 33.
Golden Sacred Dragon Fusion
Yu Xiaogang shares a Martial Soul Fusion Skill with Flender and Liu Erlong 32.

- Is permanently lost when Luo Sanpao exhausts its Golden Sacred Dragon bloodline 33.
