Background / History
Taking in Xu Jingyao
Already wheelchair-bound when Xu Jingyao and Tang Wulin arrived through a spacetime storm, Xu Tianran initially nearly strangled Jingyao. He abruptly stopped for an unexplained reason and instead brought him to the Crown Prince’s Residence. He publicly claimed Jingyao possessed imperial blood and secured a Commandery Prince title for him despite the emperor’s initial resistance 1 2.
Xu Tianran raised Jingyao with exceptional affection, while Tang Wulin was placed under a subordinate and assigned the code name “50.” Jingyao later took Tang Wulin into his own service 4.
Martial Soul Awakening
Xu Tianran attended six-year-old Jingyao’s awakening alongside the emperor. The revelation of twin martial souls and innate level twenty soul power delighted him. When the emperor adopted Jingyao and elevated his rank, Tianran declared that Jingyao would be his only younger brother, openly distancing himself from the other princes 1 2.
Afterward, he offered to have Kong Deming help Jingyao hunt soul beasts. He accepted Jingyao’s decision to postpone the hunt and left him a Class 7 Defensive Soul Tool 4.
Treatment and the Assassination Aftermath
Following the attack by twelve assassins on Jingyao’s residence, Xu Tianran revealed that he already knew what had happened and had seen Jingyao defeat the attackers. During their meeting, Jingyao began treating his damaged legs with Life Force 8.
After an hour of treatment, Tianran regained sensation and managed a slight bend of his left knee. Overcome with emotion, he embraced Jingyao and thanked him. The brothers reaffirmed their shared ambition: Tianran would become emperor, while Jingyao would support him in unifying the continent under the Sun Moon Empire 8.
Tianran subsequently warned Jingyao not to exhaust himself or reveal his healing ability. He also authorized him to command Shadow Douluo and urged him to respond without restraint to further assassination attempts, trusting that the emperor would favor Jingyao’s extraordinary potential over the offending princes 9.
On their way to the palace, Jingyao pushed his wheelchair recklessly through Mingdu. Tianran’s usual reserve gave way to laughter, and the outing eased some of the tension he had carried since losing the use of his legs. Before entering the palace, Jingyao also offered to help him pursue Godhood once strong enough 9 10.
Supporting the Carefree Pavilion
After the brothers met with the emperor, the other princes each paid Jingyao ten years’ stipend in compensation. Soul engineers unwilling to manufacture weapons were transferred to Jingyao’s command, forming the foundation of the Carefree Pavilion 10.
As the Pavilion expanded, subordinates of both the Crown Prince and the emperor warned off those intending to seize its business. Tianran’s support remained part of its political protection when Jingyao later visited Shrek City 10 20.
Jingyao’s Journey Abroad
Six years later, Tianran strongly opposed twelve-year-old Jingyao’s proposed journey to the Original Three Kingdoms. He feared that Shrek Academy would kill him upon discovering his identity and talent. He eventually permitted Shadow Douluo to accompany him and offered two additional covert retainers, whom Jingyao declined 15.
Tianran accepted responsibility for keeping Tang Wulin from going out alone and approved Jingyao’s plan to leave Ye Guyi under Kong Deming’s protection. After Jingyao departed, he struggled to return to his paperwork and quietly expressed his fear that his brother might die abroad 15 16.
While in Shrek City, Jingyao arranged to report the presence of the former crown prince, living as He Caitou, to Tianran. Jingyao intended to leave the decision about his fate to the current crown prince; no resulting decision is shown in the supplied passages 20 24 28.
Personality
Xu Tianran maintains a cultured, gentle public manner while calculating his words and expressions carefully. His ambition is explicit: he wants the Sun Moon Empire to unite the continent and endure for ten thousand years. His contempt for the other princes contrasts sharply with his attachment to Jingyao 2 9 15.
His affection for Jingyao appears in small, practical gestures as well as political protection. He covers the sleeping child with a blanket, respects his cultivation decisions, and insists that healing his legs must not come at the expense of Jingyao’s health. Jingyao nevertheless recognizes that this kindness is reserved for a very small circle of trusted people 3 4 9.
Tianran is also willing to tolerate grave wrongdoing for strategic reasons. He acknowledges the Evil Soul Masters’ atrocities but argues that the empire still needs them. At the same time, his preferred expansion strategy is described as gradual encroachment rather than increasing civilian casualties 15 20.
