Background / History
Foundation and Expansion
Xu Jingyao conceived the Pavilion’s business model while seeking funds to build his own faction. He identified civilian Soul Tool development as a neglected field and planned to recruit engineers whose work had been overlooked in the Sun Moon Empire 7.
Following a private meeting between Xu Jingyao, Xu Tianran, and the emperor, soul engineers unwilling to manufacture weapons entered Xu Jingyao’s service. Carefree Pavilion was formally established one year later, initially selling only everyday-use Soul Tools alongside food and other goods 10.
The Pavilion expanded through low margins and high sales volume. Its assembly lines, skilled workforce, and complete sales chain allowed it to maintain prices competitors could not match. The emperor’s and Crown Prince’s subordinates warned off those considering interference with the business 10.
By Xu Jingyao’s visit to Shrek Academy, the Pavilion had established a commercial network across the Sun Moon Empire and the Original Three Kingdoms. Mu En regarded its broad involvement in commerce as a potential source of information and valued its ability to smuggle advanced Soul Tools to Shrek 16 28.
Shrek Academy Negotiations
Carefree Pavilion and Treasure Pavilion had already cooperated for two years when Xu Jingyao visited Shrek Academy as Pavilion Master Ziqing. Qian Duoduo praised the profitability of their partnership and sought improved supply terms 21.
The resulting negotiations covered both commercial distribution and direct support for the academy:
| Arrangement | Agreed Terms |
|---|---|
| Treasure Pavilion supply discount | An additional five percent discount, conditional on meeting a minimum purchase amount 22 |
| Teaching Soul Tools | An annual batch of custom tools supplied to Shrek Academy at cost plus ten percent 22 |
| Outer Court scholarship | Pavilion-funded support for talented students from modest backgrounds, with recipients jointly reviewed by the Pavilion and academy 22 |
Xu Jingyao explained that cooperation with Shrek would help the Pavilion establish relationships throughout the continent’s Soul Master community 22.
Cancellation and Continued Trade
After Zhou Yi mistook Xu Jingyao for a student and insulted him, he struck her and canceled the Pavilion’s preferential cooperation with Shrek Academy. The cancellation covered the supply agreement, scholarships, custom teaching-tool orders, and preferential internal pricing. The Shrek City branch remained open 24 25.
Yan Shaozhe attempted to stop his departure with a Soul Power attack, which Xu Jingyao’s purple ring reflected back at twice its strength. The incident left Yan Shaozhe gravely injured and convinced him that Ziqing possessed power comparable to an exceptionally high-level Douluo 25 26.
Xu Jingyao rejected the academy’s subsequent attempt to restore the partnership, but negotiated a separate, confidential pill purchase through Treasure Pavilion. Qian Duoduo agreed to arrange a year’s supply at market prices plus a ten-percent procurement fee 27.
| Pill | Stated Function |
|---|---|
| Mystic Water Pill | Cleanses the meridians 27 |
| Soul-Nourishing Pill | Nurtures the mind 27 |
| Body-Tempering Pill | Strengthens the physique 27 |
The first shipment was inspected and paid for at the Shrek City branch before being dispatched to Mingdu. Xu Jingyao intended the continuing trade to keep Shrek financially interested in maintaining relations with the Pavilion 28.
Organization and Operations
Leadership and Personnel
- Xu Jingyao / Ziqing — Founder and Pavilion Master. Only a few people knew that the Pavilion’s master was the Sun Moon Empire’s Carefree King; he used the Ziqing identity while traveling abroad 14 16.
- Civilian Soul Engineers — The organization’s initial technical workforce consisted of engineers unwilling to build weapons 10.
- Shopkeeper Qian — Manager of the Shrek City branch and a covert agent previously planted in the city by Xu Tianran. He handled reception, local reports, payments, and shipments 20 28.
- Former Shrek students — A number of students eliminated from Shrek Academy joined the Pavilion and became part of its next generation. Some retained resentment toward the academy 28.
- Shadow Douluo — Accompanied Xu Jingyao as a protector, but was explicitly not a Pavilion member 16.
Shrek City Branch
- Location: A small, three-story building on the busiest street in eastern Shrek City 20.
- Functions: Sales and after-sales service, without access to core research and development 20.
- Facilities: A quiet third-floor reception area overlooking a rear courtyard 20.
- Early performance: Operated at a loss for its first six months before successful products established its foothold 22.
- Market position: The Pavilion’s market share in Shrek City exceeded its share in Mingdu, supported by students’ and teachers’ purchasing power 20.
Commercial Strategy
- Mass production: Standardized manufacturing and assembly lines supported affordable prices and large-scale distribution 10 19.
- Different price ranges: Shrek City offerings included both inexpensive products and exclusive goods appealing to wealthy customers 20.
- Protected research: Xu Jingyao kept core technology under his direct control, with all central research conducted in Mingdu rather than overseas branches 20.
- Long-term market expansion: Civilian products established demand in the Original Three Kingdoms, where nobles and wealthy merchants adopted them before commoners gradually followed 29.
- Future combat applications: Xu Jingyao envisioned later generations of Soul Tools expanding into combat use after the civilian market matured, strengthening the Sun Moon Empire’s advantage 29.
Technology and Products
Core Soul Tool Technology
The Pavilion’s research rests on three protected fields: basic Soul Tool architecture, energy systems, and control systems 20.
- Mu En assessed its technology as two or three generations ahead of Soul Tools circulating on the Sun Moon Empire’s market 28.
- Engineers reverse-engineered most Tang Sect hidden-weapon structures from defective examples available on the market 19.
- Useful hidden-weapon mechanisms were compiled into manuals and incorporated into blueprints for the next generation of Soul Tools. The Pavilion did not publicly disclose this work 19.

Relationships
- Sun Moon Imperial Family — Provided political protection during the Pavilion’s growth. Its backing discouraged attempts to seize or undermine the business 10 20.
- Ordinary Alliance, Xishui Alliance, and Aodu Chamber of Commerce — Xu Jingyao proposed using their trade routes to distribute Pavilion goods. He treated the arrangement cautiously and warned Tang Wulin to avoid Xishui Alliance members because they were Evil Soul Masters 11 12.
- Treasure Pavilion — A profitable distribution partner that later became the intermediary for the Pavilion’s confidential pill purchases 21 27.
- Tang Sect — Bei Bei hoped to combine Tang Sect hidden weapons with Pavilion technology. Xu Jingyao required mass-producible prototypes before considering cooperation, while the Pavilion had already independently studied hidden-weapon mechanisms 19 23.
- Xuan Zi — A loyal food customer whose early support helped the Shrek City branch establish itself. Xu Jingyao promised him a VIP card allowing collection without queuing 20 21.
- Body Sect — A disciple possessed a Pavilion-made attack-support tool. Du Busi recognized the organization’s widespread trade in Soul Tools and food when meeting Ziqing 34 36.
