Background / History

Shadow Douluo commanded the covert guards the Sun Moon emperor assigned to Xu Jingyao. He first appeared after the six-year-old prince had killed twelve assassins in his bedchamber, kneeling to apologize for arriving too late. Xu Jingyao suspected that he had deliberately watched the fight before revealing himself, interpreting the delay as a test rather than an innocent failure to intervene 7.

Ordered to identify the assassination’s sponsors before morning, Shadow Douluo returned with a list implicating every imperial brother except Xu Tianran, including the deposed second prince. Xu Jingyao then instructed him to hang the attackers’ heads outside the responsible princes’ residences 7.

Xu Tianran later clarified that Shadow Douluo was the emperor’s man only on the surface and also belonged to him. He authorized Xu Jingyao to command Shadow Douluo freely, but explicitly warned him not to reveal his innermost thoughts to the guard 9.

Appearance

• Face and hair: Stern-faced, with gray hair 7 21.
• Clothing: Initially wears close-fitting combat clothes; while traveling, dresses in gray and resembles an elderly servant accompanying his master 7 16.

Personality

Shadow Douluo is reserved and deferential, usually accepting orders without demanding explanations. Even when puzzled by Xu Jingyao’s references to fortune and the continent’s planar spirit, he refrains from pressing questions he does not expect the prince to answer 15 17 19.

His caution extends beyond formal guard duty. He visibly relaxes after confirming that Xu Jingyao has returned unharmed from meeting the immortal herbs, and later urges him to eat more slowly during their outing in Qingya City 32 33.

He can also be blunt and skeptical. He privately recognizes that the Tang Sect lacks the resources and influence needed to join the Carefree Pavilion’s negotiations, while dismissing the Body Sect as “reckless brutes”—an assessment Xu Jingyao immediately challenges 23 36.

Journey to the Original Three Kingdoms

Xu Jingyao selects Shadow Douluo as protection against Titled Douluo-level threats when arranging his departure from the Sun Moon Empire. Shadow Douluo agrees to accompany him without asking their destination, then supports his disguise as Ziqing, master of the Carefree Pavilion 15 16.

During their pursuit of Huo Yuhao, Shadow Douluo is overwhelmed by the Sky Dream Ice Silkworm and does not receive an explanation of what occurred. After recovering, he follows Xu Jingyao away and guards their concealed resting place 17 18.

Shrek Academy Visit

Shadow Douluo accompanies Xu Jingyao to Shrek Academy’s commercial reception and remains with him when the partnership collapses. He witnesses Yan Shaozhe’s attack being reflected by Xu Jingyao’s ring and later explains the incident to the prince, who had not noticed the attack 21 25 26 27.

Ice and Fire Yin Yang Well

After testing the poisonous fog, Shadow Douluo enters the valley behind Xu Jingyao’s protective destruction power. He remains at the entrance during the exchange with the immortal herbs and subsequently witnesses Xu Jingyao sealing the site with a destruction formation 30 31 32 33.

Qingya City and the Body Sect

In Qingya City, Shadow Douluo carries Xu Jingyao’s purchases during an evening of street-food sampling. On the following journey, he detects the fight involving Tie Hu and accompanies Xu Jingyao after the prince rescues the wounded disciple 33 34 35.

At the Body Sect, he stations himself at the guest stone house’s entrance, watching the surrounding mountain walls and steps while Xu Jingyao awaits the sect’s representatives 36.
