Background / History

Yao Xuan was transported bodily from Earth to the Douluo Continent by an accident. He awakened the Ancestral Dragon bloodline upon arrival, becoming an infant dragon during the continent’s primordial age. Finding that era dull, he went to sleep for a hundred thousand years while his body continued cultivating instinctively 1.

A disturbance in the Law of Destiny eventually awakened him in the Star Dou Great Forest. His divine sense detected Tang San near Holy Soul Village. Having read the story of Douluo Continent in his previous life, Yao Xuan regarded Tang San as a future source of disaster and resolved to prevent his ascension to godhood 1.

Appearance

• Dragon form: A colossal, nine-colored dragon measuring ten thousand li in length. His body extends across the Star Dou Great Forest, his head resembles a mountain, and his slit pupils are compared to blazing suns 1 2.
• Human form: Resembles an exceptionally handsome youth of eighteen, with long black hair, jade-like features, sword-shaped brows, starry eyes, and a straight nose. He has a tall, slender frame, broad shoulders, and a narrow waist 3.
• Demeanor: Maintains a calm, composed bearing despite his youthful appearance 3.

Personality

Yao Xuan treats his journey through the human world primarily as entertainment. Confident that Tang San cannot threaten him, he repeatedly prevents Gu Yuena from killing him outright, preferring to keep Tang San and Yu Xiaogang alive as targets for further torment 4 7 33.

He rejects obligations based solely on ancestry or shared species. Despite becoming an Ancestral Dragon, he retains a fundamentally human outlook and initially feels little concern for the Soul Beast Clan. He refuses Gu Yuena’s appeal to duty and makes any assistance conditional on his own wishes 2.

His treatment of enemies is deliberately punitive. He considers humiliation more effective than physical violence against Yu Xiaogang and extends Tang Hao’s punishment beyond death. By contrast, he rewards favored companions generously with healing, cultivation techniques, and protection; he also reassures Gu Yuena that her position as his first wife is secure 3 11 13 15 39.

Awakening and Entry into Human Society

• Gu Yuena and the ferocious beasts petition the awakened Yao Xuan to save the Soul Beast Clan. He kills Xiong Jun for defying him and accepts Gu Yuena as his maid rather than immediately committing to their cause 1 2.
• After healing Gu Yuena and taking human form, he orders the remaining beasts to stay at the Lake of Life and travels to Nuoding City 3 4.
