Background and History
Previous Life and Arrival at Nuoding Academy
Tang San retains memories and techniques from a previous life in the Tang Sect. Yao Xuan detects an otherworldly aura within his soul when he arrives at Nuoding Academy with Old Jack 5 30.
At the academy gate, a guard mocks their village, rejects Tang San’s certificate, and pushes Old Jack to the ground. Tang San responds by aiming a concealed Sleeve Arrow at the guard’s throat. Yao Xuan secretly makes him fall face-first onto a stone, breaking his front tooth before he can fire 5 6.
Yu Xiaogang intervenes and recognizes the significance of Blue Silver Grass possessing Innate Full Soul Power. His deduction of Tang San’s Twin Martial Souls earns Tang San’s admiration, and Tang San formally accepts him as his teacher with three kowtows 6 7.
First Soul Hunt
After a month of preparation, Yu Xiaogang takes Tang San to the Soul Hunting Forest. There, a nearly four-hundred-year-old Mandala Snake overwhelms Luo Sanpao and poisons Yu Xiaogang. Tang San combines hidden weapons, movement techniques, and a sword to kill the snake himself 14 15 16.
Before Tang San can absorb its ring, Yao Xuan knocks both teacher and disciple unconscious and substitutes a ten-year Solitary Bamboo ring. Tang San awakens believing that he has successfully absorbed the snake’s ring, only to discover the white ring when he summons Blue Silver Grass 16 17.
Enraged, he breaks, tramples, and burns the fallen bamboo. He also kicks the unconscious Yu Xiaogang before deciding to save him, partly to protect his own reputation and preserve access to his teacher’s theories. He expels the venom and cares for Yu Xiaogang through three days of unconsciousness 17.
The Six-Month Wager
Tang San represents Yu Xiaogang in a wager against Xiao Wu, who trains under Gu Yuena. His teacher’s reputation depends on the result: a loss requires Yu Xiaogang to admit publicly that he is a fake Grandmaster 8 18.
Tang San initially hurts Xiao Wu with stones enhanced by his hidden-weapon techniques and Mysterious Heaven Skill. Once she increases her speed, however, she closes the distance and counters his Blue Silver Pole Vault with Waist Bow, deliberately throwing him face-first into dog feces before the academy audience 19 20.
Humiliated, Tang San secretly fires his Silent Sleeve Arrow at Xiao Wu’s abdomen, intending to inflict lasting reproductive injury without openly killing her. Yao Xuan reverses the weapon’s direction, causing it to pierce Tang San’s own kidney. Academy doctors remove the arrow and close the wound with healing Soul Skills 21 22.
Departure and Growing Resentment
During the public confrontation afterward, Tang San continues defending Yu Xiaogang despite privately questioning what he has gained from their relationship. His remaining respect declines further as his teacher is humiliated, and he eventually leaves Nuoding City with him while still suffering pain in his lower back 29 30 31 33.
More than five years later, Tang San has reached level twenty-seven, acquired Parasitism from a Ghost Vine, and refined his Tang Sect techniques. Nevertheless, he continues to regard his first Soul Ring as a major setback 40 47.
Second Fight with Xiao Wu
During a later test, Tang San again faces Xiao Wu. She evades his stones with Teleportation, counters his aerial escape, and throws him into a wall. Tang San then conceals Dragon Whisker Needles behind another volley of pebbles 45.
Yao Xuan makes the needles discharge into Tang San’s own body, where they coil within his flesh and some penetrate his internal organs. He then suspends Tang San upside down from a tree as punishment 45.
Attempt to Change Teachers
Concluding that Yu Xiaogang has nothing more to offer him, Tang San secretly approaches Yao Xuan at night and asks to become his disciple. He denounces Yu Xiaogang as a fraud and promises to do anything in exchange for acceptance 47 48.
Yao Xuan does not accept him outright. Instead, he provides the Sunflower Manual, saying that successful cultivation may earn consideration. Its first page requires self-castration, and Tang San cannot turn to the next page. He realizes that Yao Xuan may be deliberately tormenting him and fears that his attempted change of allegiance will become public. No attempt to fulfill the manual’s requirement is shown 48.
Man Faced Demon Spider Encounter
On a later Soul Hunt, Tang San becomes separated from the group and encounters a Man Faced Demon Spider. He survives through Ghost Shadow Perplexing Track and kills it with a Zhuge Repeating Crossbow 49.
He begins absorbing its thousand-year ring, but loses consciousness when Yao Xuan intervenes once more. The passage ends with Tang San awakening, summoning his rings, and reacting in shock; the precise result is not displayed 49.
Appearance
- Childhood build: Lean, with exceptionally bright eyes and shabby clothing when he arrives at Nuoding Academy 5.
- Broken front tooth: Loses a front tooth in the fall arranged by Yao Xuan; afterward, air escapes through the gap when he speaks 6 7.
- Academy clothing: Wears a Nuoding Academy uniform during the wager match 21.
Personality
Tang San presents himself as respectful, humble, and devoted to his teacher. Initially, his admiration for Yu Xiaogang’s deduction of his Twin Martial Souls appears genuine. Over time, however, his loyalty becomes increasingly transactional: he considers killing Yu Xiaogang after revealing his secret techniques, then spares him because his knowledge remains useful and his disappearance could attract suspicion 7 16.
Protecting his reputation strongly influences his decisions. He rescues Yu Xiaogang partly to avoid accusations of abandoning his teacher, continues publicly defending him while privately resenting him, and seeks Yao Xuan’s instruction in secret to conceal his intended betrayal 17 29 47.
He is proud, calculating, and intensely vindictive when humiliated. Even in anger, he considers consequences: during the academy match, he avoids an openly lethal shot because it could lead to expulsion or condemnation as an Evil Soul Master, instead attempting a concealed, permanently disabling injury 20 21.
Abilities & Skills
Twin Martial Souls
Tang San possesses two Martial Souls, a fact Yu Xiaogang deduces from the mismatch between Blue Silver Grass and his Innate Full Soul Power 6 7.
- Blue Silver Grass: His identified tool Martial Soul and the recipient of his documented Soul Rings 16 19 40.
- Second Martial Soul: Confirmed to exist, but not named or demonstrated in the supplied passages 7 29.
- Early limitation: Testing shows that his Blue Silver Grass stalks can be cut by an ordinary woodcutting blade, making them unreliable as direct weapons during the first wager match 19.
First Soul Skill: Blue Silver Pole Vault
His ten-year Solitary Bamboo ring transforms Blue Silver Grass into a pole roughly ten feet long and improves his jumping ability 18.
- Allows a demonstrated vault of approximately four to five meters 18.
- Tang San considers using the pole as a weapon and combining aerial evasion with hidden-weapon counterattacks 18.
- Fails to keep him beyond Xiao Wu’s reach in either documented fight 20 45.
Second Soul Skill: Parasitism
Obtained from a seven-hundred-year-old Ghost Vine 40.
- Its name and source are documented; its effects are not demonstrated in the supplied passages 40.
Mysterious Heaven Skill
Tang San’s cultivation method also supplies internal energy for combat and treatment 16 17 19.
- Enhances the destructive force of thrown stones 19.
- Helps seal Yu Xiaogang’s meridians, restrain spreading venom, and expel poisoned blood 17.
- Advances to its second level after his first ring absorption and reaches its third stage by the five-year time skip 16 40.
Tang Sect Movement and Control Techniques
- Ghost Shadow Perplexing Track: Evasive footwork used against the Mandala Snake, Xiao Wu, and the Man Faced Demon Spider 16 19 49.
- Controlling Crane Capturing Dragon: Redirects the Mandala Snake’s charge so its mouth strikes a sword, allowing Tang San to kill it 16.
- Both techniques become increasingly refined during his later years of cultivation 40.
Hidden-Weapon Techniques
Tang San combines concealed mechanisms, accurate throwing, and internal energy 16 19.
- Throws multiple projectiles simultaneously to obstruct several escape routes 19.
- Uses Swallows Parting to make stones curve or reverse direction in midair 19.
- Improvises with darts, stones, and even white radishes as projectiles 16 19.
- His low cultivation prevents him from using many advanced techniques from his previous life; Xiao Wu’s speed counters his basic attacks 20.
- Crafts hidden weapons and explains his unusual strength and accuracy to Yu Xiaogang through childhood ironworking and stone-throwing 15 19.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Twenty-Four Moonlit Bridges — Given to him by Yu Xiaogang; stores supplies, stones, and concealed weapons, including Dragon Whisker Needles in a hidden compartment 16 19 45.
- Silent Sleeve Arrow — Concealed beneath his arm. Used to threaten the gatekeeper and Yu Xiaogang, then fired against Xiao Wu; Yao Xuan destroys its casing and redirects its arrow into Tang San’s kidney 5 6 21.
- Forged darts — Homemade projectiles used against the Mandala Snake 16.
- Sword supplied by Yu Xiaogang — Delivers the fatal brain wound to the Mandala Snake after Tang San redirects its charge 16.
- Dragon Whisker Needles — Hair-fine gold needles that coil after entering flesh. Yao Xuan turns them against Tang San during his second fight with Xiao Wu 45.
- Zhuge Repeating Crossbow — Fires more than a dozen bolts into the Man Faced Demon Spider’s abdomen, killing it 49.
- Sunflower Manual — Received as a conditional test from Yao Xuan. Its opening instruction demands self-castration, while the following page cannot be turned 48.
Relationships
- Yu Xiaogang — Teacher. Tang San’s initial admiration deteriorates into resentment, though he maintains public loyalty before secretly seeking another master 7 29 47 48.
- Yao Xuan — Principal adversary and attempted replacement teacher. Repeatedly sabotages Tang San’s opportunities and concealed attacks; Tang San nevertheless seeks his instruction for the power he could provide 16 21 45 47 49.
- Xiao Wu — Rival and repeated opponent, not an established romantic partner in this account. Tang San briefly feels that their relationship should have been different, but their documented encounters are hostile 19 20 45.
- Tang Hao — Father. Attempts to capture Xiao Wu for Tang San’s future Soul Ring, but is killed by Gu Yuena. Yao Xuan records the killing as a planned coming-of-age “gift” for Tang San; its delivery is not shown 9 10 11.
- Old Jack — Accompanies him to Nuoding Academy. The guard’s assault on Old Jack prompts Tang San to prepare a lethal Sleeve Arrow attack 5.
- Gu Yuena — Xiao Wu’s teacher and Yao Xuan’s ally; helps prepare Xiao Wu to defeat Tang San 8 9.
- Dai Mubai, Ma Hongjun, and Oscar — Fellow members of the later Shrek training and Soul Hunting group 49.
