Background / History

Relationship with Bibi Dong

Yu Xiaogang and Bibi Dong were lovers after meeting when she was sixteen. During that period, she disclosed closely guarded Spirit Hall information to him, including secrets concerning the Angel God. Their relationship ended after Bibi Dong rejected him, called him a good-for-nothing, and told him to leave Spirit Hall and Spirit City 3 5 34.

Yu Xiaogang blamed Qian Xunji for their separation but initially believed Bibi Dong had abandoned him willingly. He only learned much later that Qian Xunji had raped her to prevent their relationship and forced her to give birth to Qian Renxue 3 34.

Teaching at Nuoding Academy

While teaching at Nuoding Junior Soul Master Academy, Yu Xiaogang intervened when the gatekeeper obstructed Tang San and Xu Jie’s enrollment. After examining their Spirit Hall certificates, he concluded that their apparently poor martial souls and innate full soul power indicated twin martial souls. He wanted both boys as disciples to establish the validity of his theories and prove his own worth 1 11.

Tang San accepted him as master, but Xu Jie refused. Yu Xiaogang responded by declaring that Xu Jie would become useless without his guidance and claiming that only he knew how to cultivate twin martial souls correctly. Xu Jie left the academy rather than submit; his narration establishes that Yu Xiaogang had misidentified him, since he did not possess twin martial souls 1.

Personality

Yu Xiaogang is intensely concerned with recognition as a genuine grandmaster. He treats talented disciples as evidence of his theoretical achievements and hopes public fame will earn him a Sky Curtain reward capable of breaking his level-29 bottleneck. When his predictions fail, he repeatedly blames the rankings, incomplete information, or supposed attempts to undermine his talent rather than accepting his mistakes 1 2 4 31 40.

His attachment to Tang San becomes possessive. Despite Tang San’s rejection and eventual attempt to kill him, Yu Xiaogang insists that their master-disciple bond cannot be dissolved. He later plans to use Bibi Dong’s assistance to capture Tang San and keep him under supervision 14 27 36.

He is also jealous of achievements beyond his understanding. He dismisses Mount Lu Residence’s inhabitants as old monsters who merely had more time to cultivate, resents Bibi Dong’s concealed opportunity to become a god, and assumes criticism of his theories is motivated by envy 6 10 31. His rejection of Liu Erlong is similarly blunt: he tells her she was only a substitute for Bibi Dong despite her protection and care during his recovery 35.

When the Sky Curtain System appears, Yu Xiaogang introduces himself to the continent-wide chat and advertises Tang San’s talent. He hopes to build enough recognition to enter the Celebrity Ranking, then volunteers predictions for the five strongest factions 2.

After the Clear Sky Sect places fifth, Yu Xiaogang demands that the System correct its ranking. Tang San supports him, and the System strikes both men before extracting Tang San’s rewarded Ten Thousand Year Soul Bone. Tang San blames his teacher during the punishment; they subsequently apologize and embrace, temporarily restoring their outward relationship 4 5.

Dispute with Mount Lu Residence

Yu Xiaogang dismisses Mount Lu as an obscure backwater because he has never heard of it. The revelation that its master is named Xu Jie frightens him, recalling the boy who rejected him nine years earlier 10 11.

Seeking to preserve his reputation, he argues that Golden Core must surpass Mahayana. His explanation compares Golden Core to solid ice and Mahayana to unconsolidated vapor. Big Yellow challenges his claims, while Yu Xiaogang insists that Mount Lu Residence is slandering him 12 13 14.

The dispute damages his standing among Shrek’s students and staff. Tang San announces the end of their master-disciple relationship, others distance themselves, and Liu Erlong remains his strongest supporter 14 16 17.

Tang San’s Assassination Attempt

After leaving Spirit City, Yu Xiaogang continues pursuing Tang San and refuses to release him from their relationship. Tang San visits his room intending to kill him, raises his sleeve toward him, and attacks. Liu Erlong intervenes, knocks Tang San away, and tends to the unconscious Yu Xiaogang 25 26 27.

Even after regaining consciousness, Yu Xiaogang begs Tang San to stay. At Liu Erlong’s urging, he publicizes the attempted murder, but does so chiefly because he hopes rejection by Mount Lu Residence will force Tang San to return. His announcement ends with an offer of forgiveness 27.

Powerhouse Ranking and Recovery

Liu Erlong and Flender bring him back to Shrek Academy to recuperate. Still determined to prove himself and win Tang San back, he predicts the Powerhouse Ranking in the public chat 30 31.

His placements include Qian Daoliu ninth, Bo Saixi eighth, Tang Chen seventh, and Gu Yuena third. The Deep Sea Demonic Whale King disrupts his expectations, although Tang Chen is subsequently confirmed in seventh place 31 32 36.

Tang San’s public statement that he regrets failing to kill him causes Yu Xiaogang to faint. He revives when Liu Erlong tells him that Bibi Dong is defending his knowledge and reputation 32 33.

Departure for Spirit City

After Bibi Dong reveals the truth behind their separation, Yu Xiaogang tearfully resolves to apologize. He rejects Liu Erlong, calls her a substitute for Bibi Dong, and leaves Shrek Academy despite Flender’s intervention 34 35.

While traveling, he imagines recruiting Bibi Dong to capture Tang San and restore their relationship by force. He also continues insisting that Mahayana is inferior to Golden Core, claiming Xu Jie is unqualified for the Powerhouse Ranking. When Xu Jie is announced in first place, Yu Xiaogang exits the chat rather than answer Yan’s challenge 36 40.

Upon reaching Spirit City, he learns that Bibi Dong is dead. He initially accuses the receptionist of lying because she does not want to see him, but discussions in the streets force him to take the report seriously. He then goes to the Worship Hall and demands that Qian Daoliu return Bibi Dong to him 43.
