Background / History
Life at Nuoding Academy
Yu Xiaogang held a teaching position at Nuoding City Junior Soul Master Academy, although he rarely taught classes and continued receiving monthly Gold Soul Coins from Spirit Hall. Xiong Jun located him there but deliberately left him alone to avoid disrupting the original course of events before securing his own route toward godhood 3.
He became Tang San’s teacher and filled an emotional role that Tang San’s distant father had left unfulfilled. Even after Tang San began questioning his instruction, that earlier affection remained a significant obstacle to breaking their relationship 31 55 67.
Plans for Shrek Academy
Through correspondence with Flender, Yu Xiaogang learned about Shrek Academy’s students before arriving. He intended to organize a team led by Tang San and use its achievements to establish the value of his theories. He specifically asked Flender to curb Ning Rongrong’s pride beforehand and believed he could control Dai Mubai by exploiting his suspected difficulties with the Star Luo Imperial Family 47.
These plans depended on incomplete information. Flender had not told him that Dai Mubai had fought Tang Hao, partly out of embarrassment and partly out of concern that disclosing Dai Mubai’s affairs might anger Black Panther 47.
Arrival and Public Humiliation
On reaching Shrek Academy, Yu Xiaogang mistook Dai Mubai’s villa for a residence Flender had prepared for him. Ma Hongjun stopped him from entering and challenged both his claimed teaching appointment and his qualifications. Ning Rongrong joined the confrontation, citing her father’s low opinion of his scholarship and dismissing his clan background as a source of intimidation 46 47.
Ma Hongjun attacked with his third soul skill, mistakenly assuming that Flender’s longtime companion must possess at least Soul King cultivation. Yu Xiaogang summoned Luo Sanpao to defend himself, but the confrontation ended with him beaten, dressed in rags, and hung at the academy gate beneath a sign declaring him a thief 48.
He remained there for three days and nights without water. When Flender and Tang San returned, they initially overlooked him, and he lost consciousness. Oscar later restored some awareness with recovery sausages, after which Flender took him to Suotuo City for treatment 49 53 54.
Failed Bid for Control
Yu Xiaogang demanded Ma Hongjun and Ning Rongrong’s expulsion, and Flender agreed. He also urged Flender to hand him control of the academy, proposing that removing Dai Mubai would make Oscar and Ma Hongjun manageable. Learning that Dai Mubai had fought Tang Hao initially left him despairing, but he soon redirected his attention toward obtaining Dai Mubai’s cultivation-enhancing resources 54 55.
Flender warned that Dai Mubai’s assistance depended on personal goodwill rather than schemes. Yu Xiaogang nevertheless remained confident that he could outmaneuver a fifteen-year-old without confronting him directly 55.
His authority suffered another blow when he saw Zhu Zhuqing’s ten-thousand-year fourth soul ring. He rejected the sight because his research placed the fourth-ring limit at five thousand years. Flender’s explanation—that absorption limits depended on physique, meridians, and spiritual power—further undermined Tang San’s confidence in him 57.
Breakdown with Tang San
Tang San questioned why Yu Xiaogang had concealed the identity of his Clear Sky Hammer and failed to explain the unusual quality of his Blue Silver Grass. Yu Xiaogang attributed part of the secrecy to Tang Hao’s instructions, then deflected further questions by testing Tang San’s theoretical knowledge 55 56.
Oscar supplied a dossier on Yu Xiaogang, while Xiao Wu openly criticized his arrogance, untested theories, and apparent use of Tang San. Tang San subsequently refused to defend his teacher against Ma Hongjun’s hostility and demanded a workable plan to change his martial soul’s development path 58 59.
After developing his Blue Silver Grass through jade transformation, Tang San became convinced that his earlier instruction had harmed him. He prepared a poison intended to diminish Yu Xiaogang’s cultivation and male functions, although the provided account does not establish that he administered it. Tang Hao later explicitly denied ordering Yu Xiaogang to conceal the Clear Sky Hammer’s identity 62 65 66.
Fatal Injury and Death
Yu Xiaogang continued trying unsuccessfully to bring Shrek’s students under his guidance. When Tang Hao arrived, he approached him expecting support. Instead, an enraged Tang Hao kicked him into a stone building, breaking more than half his bones and leaving him barely alive. Shao Xin’s Sugar Beans kept him breathing 67.
Tang Hao chose not to finish him off because his former relationship with Bibi Dong might provide access to her knowledge of twin martial souls. Flender, meanwhile, committed himself to saving Yu Xiaogang even at the cost of his remaining ties with the academy 67 69.
Dai Mubai refused Flender’s request for treatment. During his examination, he also secretly left a wisp of power matching Tang Hao’s within Yu Xiaogang. Flender departed with recovery food and repeatedly burned his own martial soul origin to carry his friend to Heaven Dou City 70 72.
At Blue Tyrant Academy, Liu Erlong became overwhelmed by grief rather than immediately arranging treatment. Flender spent nearly half a day finding a Nine Heart Begonia healer, but Yu Xiaogang died in Liu Erlong’s arms just before help reached him. The healer confirmed that he could no longer be saved 73.
Personality
Yu Xiaogang’s central ambition was to vindicate himself through his students. He imagined teaching six similarly aged Titled Douluo and thereby making his title of Grandmaster impossible to dispute. Repeated rejection did not persuade him to abandon this goal 67.
He was highly protective of his intellectual reputation. His pride in the Grandmaster title contrasted with the ridicule it attracted from other factions, and evidence contradicting his soul-ring limits provoked outright denial. Nevertheless, the possibility of correcting his own deficient talent tempted him to set aside his dignity in pursuit of Dai Mubai’s resources 47 55 57.
His affection for Tang San coexisted with a desire to use Tang San’s success as proof of his own worth. Tang San continued to recognize the reality of his earlier care even after discovering deception and harmful instruction 59 67 68.
Abilities & Skills
Luo Sanpao
Yu Xiaogang can summon his martial soul, Luo Sanpao, for combat 48.
- Shown technique: “Fart like thunder, Earth-Shattering Luo Sanpao,” which releases yellow smoke carried on waves of air 48.
- Shown limitation: Summoning Luo Sanpao does not prevent his defeat by Ma Hongjun 48.
Soul Master Theory
Yu Xiaogang studies martial souls, soul-ring selection, and twin martial soul cultivation, but his theoretical authority is repeatedly challenged 55 57 58.
- Advises Tang San not to cultivate his second martial soul until the first reaches a bottleneck 55.
- Treats five thousand years as the maximum age for a fourth soul ring, a limit contradicted by Zhu Zhuqing’s fourth ring 57.
- Keeps notes on other soul masters; Tang San uses those records to question the explanation for his own Blue Silver Grass’s transformation 58.
- Attempts to assemble a new theory when Tang San demands a solution for changing his development path 59.
Psychological Manipulation
The narration identifies manipulation as one of Yu Xiaogang’s genuine strengths despite his poor cultivation 47 55.
- Invokes Tang Hao’s supposed instructions to soften Tang San’s questioning and redirect blame 55.
- Shifts the burden of explanation back to Tang San when challenged about martial soul quality 56.
- Plans to leverage students’ backgrounds and insecurities to establish a Tang San-centered team 47.
- Fails to win over Shrek’s existing students, eventually losing even Flender’s active cooperation in those efforts 67.
Relationships
- Tang San — Disciple and intended proof of his theories. Their paternal bond deteriorates into distrust, resentment, and contemplated retaliation, although Tang San retains conflicted feelings about his earlier care 55 59 62 67.
- Flender — Longtime friend and strongest supporter. Flender chooses him over the academy’s other members and sacrifices his own cultivation prospects while trying to obtain treatment 69 72 73.
- Liu Erlong — Longtime companion deeply attached to him. Their reunion ends with his death in her arms, after which she blames herself and descends into madness 72 73.
- Bibi Dong — Former girlfriend and current Pope of Spirit Hall. Tang Hao values this connection as a possible route to her twin martial soul cultivation knowledge; news of Yu Xiaogang’s death destroys her emotional restraint 67 73.
- Yu Yuanzhen — Father. Upon learning of his death, Yu Yuanzhen leaves the Blue Lightning Tyrant Dragon Clan for the first time in years to see him 73.
- Tang Hao — An idol whom Yu Xiaogang associates with overcoming Qian Xunji. Yu Xiaogang expects his backing, but Tang Hao instead inflicts the injuries that leave him dying 67.
- Qian Xunji — Previously intimidated him with Titled Douluo pressure, leaving a lasting psychological shadow 67.
- Dai Mubai — Rival for influence over Shrek’s students. Dai Mubai opposes his plans, refuses to heal him, and secretly interferes during his examination 54 70.
- Ma Hongjun — Rejects his authority, defeats him, and hangs him at the academy gate. Yu Xiaogang subsequently seeks his expulsion 48 54.
- Ning Rongrong — Publicly challenges his reputation and joins Ma Hongjun in opposing him. He had previously asked Flender to temper her disposition 47 54.
- Oscar — Investigates him and supplies Tang San with a dossier. Although Oscar helps revive him, he follows instructions that Yu Xiaogang must not die at their faction’s hands 53 58.
Legacy
- Golden Iron Triangle’s collapse: His death leaves Liu Erlong mentally shattered and Flender crippled by the sacrifices made during the rescue attempt 72 73.
- Spirit Hall’s accelerated mobilization: After receiving a report blaming Tang Hao, Bibi Dong orders preparations completed within three years for the Soul Hunting Plan, abandoning her earlier, slower timetable 73.
- Shrek Academy’s internal rupture: Flender’s support for Yu Xiaogang’s schemes alienates students and longtime colleagues. Oscar withholds official paperwork that could have secured recognition and benefits for the academy 69 71.
