Background

Wang Qing was captured by bandit cultivators as a young child and taken to Little Wave Island’s Trade Fair to be sold. Chen Yihua bought him out of compassion and raised him for two years. When Wang Qing was tested at six, he was found to possess a spiritual root 41.

He grew up on Linghua Island and remembered no life beyond it. His first departure came in his teenage years, when he accompanied Zhao Yi and Liu Yu on a mission to kill Daoist Mu on Jade Pearl Island 3.

Appearance

  • Daoist clothing: Appears as a blue-robed young man; later wears a sky-blue Daoist robe embroidered with gold thread 33 116.
  • Facial scar: Receives a blood-red scar across his left cheek from a Dao Foundation cultivator’s sword attack. Residual magical power makes it difficult to heal immediately; Zhao Yi expects it to dissipate once Wang Qing reaches perfection of Spirit Drawing 121 122.

Personality

Wang Qing is excitable, playful, and easily bored by isolation. He eagerly anticipates his first dangerous journey, teases Wang Ping aboard ship, and complains about prolonged seclusion. His solitary posting on Kongqing Island becomes so intolerable that Zhao Yi eventually exchanges guard duties with him 3 39 55 143.

He loves wine despite having little tolerance. Zhao Yi restricts his drinking, while Wang Qing repeatedly uses celebrations as opportunities to bring out treasured vintages. He is equally enthusiastic about treasure hunting, exploring cave abodes and collecting miscellaneous spoils that others overlook 24 71 116 121 139.

His impulsiveness can have serious consequences. Mocking Mo Wusheng earns him a nearly fatal sword wound, and Zhao Yi later reprimands him for recklessness during the attack on Kongqing Island. Nevertheless, he is capable of recognizing his mistakes and worries that his speech has endangered Linghua Island 57 59 66.

Beneath his carefree manner, Wang Qing is observant and politically experienced. He recognizes the danger of exposing a spirit vein, questions Daoist Liefeng’s suspiciously restrained attacks, and explains factional rivalries to Zhao Yi using examples from neighboring islands. His extensive travels give him insight into cultivators outside Linghua Island’s leadership circle 45 129 150.

He is fiercely loyal to his fellow disciples and equally persistent in his grudges. He supports prioritizing Li Hai’s Dao Foundation breakthrough even at considerable personal cost, but continues pressing for retaliation against the Han Family. His ruthlessness toward cultivators has a firm boundary: he refuses to kill mortals or allow Guiwu and Zhang Ying to do so 145 152 166 169.

Abilities & Skills

Archery

Wang Qing specializes in ranged combat, combining conventional arrows, talisman arrows, and arrows condensed from magical power 4 73 109.

  • Talisman arrows: Uses explosive, gale, and freezing varieties. Freezing arrows immobilize Daoist Mu and later create ice on the sea to support Li Hai 4 73.
  • Chain arrows: Lands three explosive arrows on the same point to break a protective barrier, then follows with a lethal shot 73.
  • Long-range targeting: Channels power into his eyes to aim at a Demon-Hunting Crossbow more than one li away 73.
  • Meteor Fall: An incomplete killing technique taken from the only archery manual Linghua Island had found at that time. It fails to penetrate Daoist Liefeng’s shield 129.
  • Later inheritance: Acquires a separate archery inheritance that substantially improves his combat strength. Fighting alongside Guiwu, he can exchange blows evenly with Li Hai in sparring 132.
  • Arrow Rain: Releases an arrow that divides into dozens of projectiles, striking enemies concealed within Zhang Ying’s black smoke 146.
  • Lightning attacks: Fires a lightning-laced arrow that destroys a great-accomplishment Spirit Drawing Unicorn Shark. He also uses arrows that become lightning nets to obstruct an enemy 145 150.
  • Limits: His strongest shots can exhaust him. One attack consumes eighty percent of his magical power; a later shot drains the remainder and leaves him unconscious 149 150.

Beast Taming and Blood Contract

Zhao Yi explicitly recognizes Wang Qing’s skill in beast taming and asks him to investigate taming birds for message delivery 68.

  • Guiwu partnership: Shares a mental link with Guiwu, allowing coordinated action without spoken instructions 73.
  • Scouting and transport: Directs Guiwu to search the seabed, locate underwater entrances, carry passengers, and assist in naval fighting 39 44 73.
  • Cultivation support: Uses their blood contract to advance to the Spirit Attraction Stage. After Guiwu gains a middle-grade bloodline, the contract alone is said to give Wang Qing a thirty-percent chance of forming a Dao Foundation without pills 102 125.
  • Beast knowledge: Identifies Guiwu’s emerging Black-Shelled Horned Turtle traits and explains the bloodline-enhancing effects of Blood-Tempering Pills 102 122.
  • Limits: Cannot make every demon accept a contract; Zhang Ying refuses to contract with him and instead submits to Zhao Yi 147.

Cultivation Arts

Art Documented Use
Azure Wood Pure Spirit Art Recovered from Daoist Mu’s residence. Zhao Yi approves Wang Qing’s plan to practice it because it suits his wood spiritual root 7.
Black Ginseng Hundred Spirits Art Identified as his current cultivation method while discussing preparations for Dao Foundation 134.
Yi Wood Azure Thunder Guidance Obtained from ruins; employs wood to wield lightning. Records seven Dao Foundation condensation methods: three inferior-grade, three middle-grade, and one superior-grade 152 162.
Boiling Blood Art Uses it while blocking a Dao Foundation cultivator’s escape. The art burns essence blood to temporarily double strength and can be fatal if maintained too long 4 121.

Swordsmanship and Improvised Combat

Wang Qing teaches martial arts and swordsmanship to Li Hai, although Li Hai later surpasses him 9 14 55.

  • Close combat: Holds a powerful bandit swordsman to a standstill despite fatigue from repeated bow shots, though the exchange leaves him severely wounded 73 74.
  • Flying swords: Uses flying swords alongside his bow during the battle against the wounded Dao Foundation cultivator 121.
  • Improvised weapon damage: Shoots a bottle of potent poison above an enemy flying sword, coating and corroding the blade while Li Hai withdraws his own weapon 121.

Administration and Negotiation

  • Recruitment: Helps test Jade Pearl Island’s inhabitants for spiritual roots and assists in bringing Chunsheng into Linghua Island’s care 7 8.
  • Market enforcement: Publicly executes eight cultivators from Three Rivers Island and Bright Moon Island for violating market rules 102.
  • Revenue negotiations: Secures twenty percent of Yunsha Market’s revenue for Linghua Island, with three families each yielding five percentage points 135.
  • Intelligence work: Is assigned to establish an intelligence team, with Greenfish Island selected as its training base 169.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Iron-backed bow: His early weapon, still an ordinary bow after he enters Meridian Opening 16.
  • Talisman arrows: Carries specialized explosive, gale, and freezing arrows; his documented supply during the bandit-ship battle totals twenty 73.
  • Flying boat and jade pearl: Low-grade flight and defensive artifacts, respectively, each with three restrictions; gifts from Zhao Yi after his Spirit Attraction breakthrough 102.
  • Sea-snake bow: A sapphire-blue bow with a silvery-white string, forged from a Spirit Attraction sea snake’s bones and tendon. Wang Qing helps Yang Yan hunt the snake and receives twenty matching snake-bone arrows. The bow is later cut apart during the Dao Foundation ambush 112 121.
  • Nine-restriction battle bow: A high-grade artifact recovered during an expedition with Li Yufeng and Chen Yuxiang. Wang Qing agrees to compensate Wind Howl Island with 1,500 spirit stones for its contracted share 139.

  • Blood-Tempering Pills: Obtained from the Water Mansion’s Beast Garden; used in efforts to improve Guiwu’s bloodline and save him after severe injuries 122 125.
  • Golden-Feather Eagle eggs: Purchases three at Yunsha Market for one hundred spirit stones 135.
  • Childhood jade bead: A seaside find that stays cool in summer and warm in winter. Gives it to Li Hai as an apprenticeship gift without knowing its true nature 14.
