Arc 3Gengetsu's Rise and Purge
Gengetsu defeated Kumogakure, gained the Eternal Mangekyō Sharingan, and survived an effort by Konoha’s elders to remove him. After exposing their misconduct and defeating the Nine-Tails, he faced the elders and their clans as they tried to flee Konoha.
- Gengetsu defeated Kumogakure’s army, captured Yugito Nii, and forced Kumogakure to surrender territory and pay reparations, while Shikaku Nara warned him that Hiruzen Sarutobi’s allies were plotting against him.
- Hiruzen Sarutobi, Utatane Koharu, and Mitokado Homura accused Gengetsu of stealing Wood Release, but Uchiha Fugaku presented a forged genealogy and Tsunade confirmed that Gengetsu had awakened the kekkei genkai himself.
- Gengetsu had Hiruzen Sarutobi removed as Hokage and detained the elders, then revealed that Shimura Danzō had framed Hatake Sakumo with Hiruzen’s tacit approval and restored Sakumo’s reputation.
- After Uchiha ninja arrested Asuma Sarutobi and hundreds of Sarutobi Clan members, Shimura Danzō persuaded Hiruzen Sarutobi, Utatane Koharu, and Mitokado Homura to escape Konoha with him.
- Shimura Danzō released the Nine-Tails from Naruto Uzumaki’s seal, but Gengetsu restrained it with Susanoo and Wood Release and returned it to Naruto’s seal.
- Gengetsu pursued and repeatedly killed Danzō through Izanagi, while Hiruzen Sarutobi, Utatane Koharu, and Mitokado Homura led their clans in an attack on Konoha’s defenses and tried to leave through the main gate.
- Gengetsu demanded that the departing clans surrender their wealth and ninjutsu and cripple their chakra pathways, then broke the Sarutobi Clan’s Three-Way Seal and sent Konoha’s forces after the fleeing ninja.
- Gengetsu captured Mitokado Homura after severing his arm and pursued Utatane Koharu as Hiruzen Sarutobi tried to escape, leaving Koharu wounded and begging for mercy after Gengetsu severed her right arm.
