Background / History

Orphanage and life alone

Naruto is the son of the Fourth Hokage, Minato Namikaze, and Kushina. His parents died during the Nine-Tails’ attack, and Minato sealed half of Kurama inside him. Naruto initially knows neither his parents’ identities nor why the beast is within him 1 3 8.

In Konoha year 51, Hiruzen Sarutobi closes the orphanage and sends three-year-old Naruto to live alone in an apartment. Naruto knows him as “Grandpa Director” and interprets the separation as another abandonment. Hiruzen promises regular visits and a monthly allowance, while Uzuki Yugao escorts Naruto to his new home and watches over him from outside 1.

Hashirama’s disciple and the village rumors

Hashirama arrives from the Pure Land and meets Naruto inside his Sealing Space. He promises to teach Naruto how to become an outstanding Hokage and introduces him to Kurama. Naruto and Hashirama are both incarnations of Asura, and their meeting establishes a master–student bond 2 3.

Danzo’s Root operatives subsequently spread rumors that the Nine-Tails has transformed into a blond child with whisker marks. Villagers surround Naruto, throw rotten food at him, and physically attack him before Yugao intervenes 5 7.

Afterward, Hashirama explains that a villain controlled Kurama during the attack that killed Naruto’s parents. Naruto accepts the explanation and vows to expose the culprit rather than blame Kurama. Yugao carries the exhausted boy home and cooks for him, becoming an increasingly important caregiver 8 9.

Hinata’s rescue and friendship with Sasuke

Naruto befriends Hinata after driving away three boys who are bullying her. She recognizes him as a human rather than a demon fox, accepts his friendship, and receives his gloves as a winter gift 9.

When Naruto later sneaks into the Hyuga compound to visit her, Kurama detects an unfamiliar person and Hashirama realizes that Hinata has been abducted. Naruto pursues the Cloud ninja, suffers a deep hand wound, and accepts Kurama’s chakra to continue fighting. His chakra claws pierce the kidnapper, allowing him to catch Hinata and set her down before fainting. Hiashi arrives and kills the dying attacker 12 13.

Naruto later meets Sasuke at a park, where an argument over a swing becomes a contest over who will be the other’s “big brother.” Their rivalry develops into friendship through sparring, fishing, and shared meals. Itachi secures Hiruzen’s permission for weekly visits, although Naruto’s identity is to remain concealed from the wider Uchiha clan 24 25 26 27.

Naruto fears that the villagers’ hostility will drive Hinata and Sasuke away, but both stand by him during an outing to the Akimichi BBQ Restaurant. Their friendship also attracts political suspicion: Danzo interprets Sasuke’s closeness to Naruto as an Uchiha attempt to influence the jinchūriki, and Hiruzen later asks Itachi to reduce visits 29 31.

Ninja Academy

Over the next two years, Naruto trains regularly and spends time with Hinata and Sasuke, though Sasuke’s visits decline as tensions within the Uchiha clan worsen. Naruto’s connections to the Hokage’s ANBU and the two clans also make shopkeepers less willing to refuse him service 32.

At the Academy, Naruto openly declares his ambition to become Hokage and befriends Kiba. His strength attracts attention when he breaks a training dummy’s neck, but his first practical kunai strike misses its intended target. He also readily accepts defeat when Sasuke proves superior in their shuriken contest 34 37 39 40 42.

On the second school day, Naruto and Sasuke arrive ten minutes late and are sent to the back of the classroom. During a later chakra lesson, Naruto repeats Hashirama’s vague extraction instructions and releases a conspicuous wave of chakra. Iruka calls him a special case and warns the class against using his demonstration as a model 49 50.

Appearance

Naruto has golden-blond hair, blue eyes, and foxlike whisker marks on his cheeks 1 17.

• Height: Approximately one meter as a three-year-old; 1.3 meters by the time he enters the Academy 7 32.
• Long hair: Grows it out because he admires Hashirama’s appearance when using Wood Release and fears mistreatment by village barbers. He later ties it back with a hair tie from Hinata 23 32.
• Chakra-dependent whiskers: His marks disappear when Kurama withdraws his leaked chakra and return when excess Nine-Tails chakra remains outside the seal 6 17.
• Tailed Beast Cloak: During Hinata’s rescue, scarlet chakra surrounds him and forms claws; his eyes turn scarlet before returning to blue when he looks at her 13.

Personality

Naruto longs for companionship and is deeply affected by rejection. He initially cries over being left alone, worries that he will never find friends, and fears that Hinata and Sasuke will abandon him after experiencing the villagers’ hostility. He regards Hashirama and Kurama as family rather than merely friends 1 12 18 29.

He is protective and generous, confronting Hinata’s bullies, giving her his gloves, and pursuing her kidnapper despite injury. His trust in Kurama survives learning about the Nine-Tails’ attack once he understands that an outside villain controlled him 8 9 13.

Naruto also enjoys boasting, teasing Sasuke, and turning the village’s frightening image of him back on hostile people. Although he threatens retaliation, he generally does not attack first unless someone causes trouble. His competitiveness does not prevent him from sincerely praising Sasuke after losing their throwing contest 17 19 24 42 49.

Physical Strength and Taijutsu

Hashirama teaches Naruto how to generate force and later develops his taijutsu 9 10 16.
