History

Warring States Period and Konoha’s Founding

The Uchiha and Senju maintained a blood feud during the war years. Izuna supported Madara by managing clan political affairs and promoting its intellectual, aesthetic, and practical development. He died from Tobirama’s Flying Thunder God before Konoha was founded 23 94.

Hashirama and Madara eventually overcame the feud and established Konoha together. When Madara later left the village, not a single Uchiha clansman followed him. He subsequently attacked Konoha with the Nine-Tails; although believed to have died fighting Hashirama, he later admitted that he had faked his death 69 76 138 368.

The clan’s wartime practices also included using the girl later known as Hikari as a weapon. Uchiha clansmen experimented on her and implanted ocular techniques into her eyes. The Senju and Sarutobi eventually joined forces to seal her away 568 569.

Political Isolation

After Madara’s departure, the Uchiha ceased to have representation among Konoha’s leadership. Their police duties maintained village order but also made them unpopular. Shisui asked Hiruzen to allow the clan career paths outside the police force, warning that extremists were increasing in number 31 69.

Fugaku and Hiruzen had previously used the naming of Sasuke after Hiruzen’s father as an opportunity to ease relations. Those efforts weakened as the clan’s Hawk Faction gained influence. Naruto and Sasuke’s friendship, initially seen as a possible bridge between families, instead encouraged extremists interested in the Nine-Tails jinchūriki 27 31.

The extremist faction included veterans of the Second and Third Shinobi World Wars. They blamed Konoha for their deteriorating reputation and limited advancement, and argued that the village belonged to its Uchiha co-founders. They sought to overthrow Hiruzen and questioned whether Fugaku possessed the Mangekyō needed to lead them 69.

Shisui’s Death and the Shrine Purge

Shisui tried to reconcile the clan and village, but Danzo trapped him at Root. Betrayed, stabbed, and poisoned, he used Susanoo to fight toward an escape. His death triggered Itachi’s Mangekyō awakening 45 46.

Itachi subsequently commanded New Root in an operation against the extremists gathered at Naka Shrine. Assisted by Kō—Tenzo—and Root and ANBU personnel, he killed the nearly one hundred Uchiha assembled there 69 70.

The operation did not exterminate the entire clan. Other residents discovered the bloodshed the next morning. Itachi’s confrontation with the survivors ended with his departure and loss of his Uchiha identity 75 77.

Surviving Clan and Itachi’s Return

Fugaku, Mikoto, Sasuke, and the wider clan community survived. Sasuke made bringing Itachi home one of his central goals, training under Fugaku and the returned Izuna 94 101 141.

Years later, Itachi entered the clan compound with Izumi and Tenzo. The residents showed little hostility, although Tenzo’s participation in the purge had damaged his reputation among them. Itachi reached the family residence and addressed Mikoto as “Mother” 380.

War and Later Developments

Obito used Madara’s identity while directing the Akatsuki and pursuing the tailed beasts. His identity was deduced through the relationship between his eye and Kakashi’s, then disclosed to the Kage after his declaration of the Fourth Shinobi World War. The real Madara also returned through Impure World Reincarnation 317 342 354.

The clan was not united behind them. Itachi fought both Obito and Madara, while Fugaku and Sasuke later fought against White Zetsu and Asura respectively. After the war, Madara remained imprisoned, and Izuna visited him with Sasuke 317 358 443 456.

Later research transformed Uchiha ocular power into a major experimental resource. Tobirama demonstrated cloned Sharingan, developed Large Mangekyō, and helped Sasuke awaken the Rinnegan 518 547.

Organization and Culture

• Clan head: The leader is expected to possess enough strength to command respect. Fugaku attempted to calm the extremists rather than endorse their demands 69 70.
• Elders: Seniority carries political weight independently of combat ability. The nearly seventy-year-old head elder held high standing despite not being especially powerful 70.
• Clan pride: Sasuke’s upbringing emphasizes Uchiha superiority, honor, and dignity. His boastful poses remind Hashirama of Izuna and Madara 24 25 26 28.
• Childhood training: Sasuke learns taijutsu, shuriken throwing, and Fire Release before or during his early Academy years, with substantial instruction from Itachi 24 26 41.
• Political division: The clan contains both coup supporters and members seeking accommodation with Konoha; Shisui’s reform efforts contrast directly with the extremists’ plans 31 69.
• Reputation and prejudice: Danzo and Tobirama repeatedly describe the Uchiha as inherently evil. This is their hostile characterization, not a position shared by every character 23 31 76 77.

Abilities & Skills

Sharingan

The clan’s signature eyes draw power from intense emotion. Bereavement and other severe emotional shocks are repeatedly associated with their development 36 46 76.

• Perception: Three-tomoe eyes track movement closely enough for Itachi to notice Konan’s pupils contracting and for Sasuke to follow Zabuza through heavy mist 176 278.
• Progressive development: Sasuke advances through one-, two-, and three-tomoe forms before awakening the Mangekyō 45 94 101 274.
• Not an automatic victory: Superior perception does not eliminate differences in experience or physical ability; Sasuke remains vulnerable to veteran opponents 87 176.

Mangekyō Sharingan

Mangekyō eyes possess powerful individual dōjutsu. Their abilities differ between users and even between a user’s two eyes 45 274.

• Ocular limits: Ordinary Mangekyō have finite ocular power, and repeated use threatens eyesight. Sasuke initially limits their use on Fugaku’s advice 45 274.
• Izanagi: Shisui uses it to turn damage suffered into a dream for a short time while keeping damage inflicted real 46.
• Transplanted techniques: Hikari’s eyes were implanted with abilities including Amaterasu and Tsukuyomi; these were distinct from her own techniques 569.

Susanoo

Susanoo is the “third power” associated with bringing together two Mangekyō Sharingan of the same origin 45.

• Forms and scale: Manifestations range from protective skeletal structures to enormous armored figures 70 279 352.
• Known users: Shisui, Itachi, Madara, Fugaku, and Sasuke demonstrate it 45 70 352 456.
• Individual variation: Shisui’s is green, Itachi’s crimson, and Madara’s blue 46 279 354.
• Weapons: Shisui uses Yasaka Magatama and a Spiral Gun; Itachi’s Susanoo carries the Yata Mirror and Totsuka Blade 46 318.
• Cost: Shisui experiences severe ocular drain, while Itachi’s use requires subsequent care from Tenzo 45 279.

Conventional Combat

Fugaku describes the traditional Uchiha approach as Fire Release and shuriken attacks followed by Sharingan-assisted genjutsu or swordsmanship 456.

• Fire Release: Common techniques include Great Fireball and Great Dragon Fire. Madara and Obito demonstrate much larger-scale flame attacks 26 70 305 364.
• Shurikenjutsu: Practiced from childhood; Itachi later combines precise throws with Flying Thunder God markings 41 358.
• Swordsmanship: Sasuke and Itachi share an Uchiha foundation, later shaped by Izuna’s and Tobirama’s instruction respectively 557 558.

• Cloned Sharingan: Tobirama shows completed examples to Naruto, who declines to replace his own eyes 518.
• Large Mangekyō: Each requires more than three hundred Mangekyō Sharingan; five are completed and stored at Konoha’s Research Institute 547.
• Blank-slate eyes: The mass-produced Mangekyō supply enhanced ocular power and dynamic vision but lack individual dōjutsu 547.
