Background / History

Friendship with Hashirama and Konoha’s Founding

Madara befriended Hashirama during the Warring States Period. They met by a river, skipped stones toward one another, and developed a shared ambition to change the era by establishing a shinobi village 26 76 150.

Their reconciliation followed a bitter conflict between their clans. When a wounded Madara demanded that Hashirama either kill Tobirama or take his own life, Hashirama chose himself. Madara caught his hand before he could strike, accepting his sincerity 117.

The Uchiha and Senju subsequently founded Konoha together. With Madara, Hashirama, Tobirama, and Mito at their peak, other villages avoided attacking the new settlement, allowing its early missions to focus on construction and everyday needs 69 150.

Madara’s approach to inter-village relations was considerably harsher than Hashirama’s. When Mū and Ōnoki came to discuss cooperation, he insisted that Konoha needed obedient underlings rather than equal allies, backing his position with Susanoo 350.

Defection and the Eye of the Moon Plan

Madara eventually left Konoha without a single Uchiha clansman following him. He later returned with the Nine-Tails and fought Hashirama in a battle that left Hashirama gravely injured 69 76.

His apparent death was a deception: he left behind a Shadow Clone and gambled that Hashirama would protect his supposed corpse. After obtaining Hashirama’s flesh and blood, he combined their powers and awakened the Rinnegan 51 397.

Madara interpreted the Uchiha Stone Tablet as guidance from the Sage of Six Paths. He embraced Infinite Tsukuyomi—a worldwide genjutsu requiring the Ten-Tails—as the answer to war and suffering 397 399.

He also manipulated Obito’s attachment to Rin. Naruto later exposed that Madara had orchestrated the circumstances of Rin’s death to awaken Obito’s Mangekyō and draw him into the Eye of the Moon Plan 410 411.

Resurrection and War

After Obito refused to resurrect Madara before collecting all the tailed beasts, Black Zetsu pursued Impure World Reincarnation as an alternative. Once restored, Madara reunited with Obito at the underground base. Their contest of authority nearly became a fight, although Madara approved when Obito proposed crushing the villages one at a time 324 348 349.

At Iwagakure, Madara overwhelmed coordinated defenders and confronted the Five Kage. Itachi’s arrival brought him close to being sealed by the Totsuka Blade, while Tobirama’s intervention forced him to contend with Flying Thunder God attacks and sealing chains 352 354 358 359 360.

Recognizing Hashirama’s chakra within Naruto, Madara abandoned his immediate opponents to seek his old rival. Naruto and Hinata fought him instead. When Hashirama finally spoke through Naruto, Madara invited him to join his plan; Hashirama refused, and Madara withdrew with Obito 364 368.

Determined to recover enough strength for a proper rematch, Madara sought improvements to his reincarnated body from Black Zetsu and Orochimaru. During this period, he also reunited with Izuna and reassured his younger brother that he was not asking him to support the plan 370 396 397 398 400.

Madara eventually received his long-awaited battle with Hashirama, who controlled Naruto’s body. Their clash escalated from giant constructs to close combat with the Gunbai, but ended with Madara defeated and sealed 411 412 413 415 417 419.

Imprisonment and Disillusionment

Tobirama secured Madara with chakra seals and a specialized blindfold that continuously destroyed his regenerating eyes. Hashirama argued against Infinite Tsukuyomi and tried to persuade him that future generations could continue working toward peace. Madara was affected, but still hoped Black Zetsu might eventually restore his opportunity to act 419 420.

Returning to Konoha, Madara acknowledged that he had ordered Obito to begin the war and had caused many deaths. Tobirama insisted that his crimes warranted a return to the Pure Land, despite Hashirama and Izuna asking for another solution 424.

Hashirama nevertheless obtained permission to show him around the village. Their outing included a Ferris wheel ride, during which Hashirama invited him to stay and witness the era Naruto’s generation would create. Izuna and Sasuke also visited him after he returned to prison 427 431 443.

Black Zetsu’s capture destroyed Madara’s remaining confidence in his plan. During interrogation, Zetsu denied being Madara’s will and mocked him for being manipulated. Madara initially dismissed the revelations as Tobirama’s genjutsu, but eventually became disillusioned 464 465 466 468.

Life in Naruto’s Sealing Space

Tobirama negotiated a new arrangement: Madara would remain to witness the future shinobi world while providing Naruto with additional power. His soul was transferred into Naruto’s Sealing Space, where the Blue Screen restored his body and chakra 518 524.

Madara subsequently taught Naruto how to use Limbo: Border Jail. His daily life also became more domestic: watching anime with Hashirama, ordering Kurama to fan him, and recovering from food poisoning after trusting Hashirama’s cooking 519 522 523.

He later shared the Sealing Space with Isshiki. Although the two frequently clashed over their habits and attitudes, both observed the later Ōtsutsuki confrontations from within Naruto 548 550 577.

His desire for peace is genuine, but his chosen solution replaces reality with an illusion. He believes Infinite Tsukuyomi can free people from conflict and regards himself as the savior selected by the Sage of Six Paths. Even after defeat, he initially refuses to abandon that conviction 397 399 420.

Hashirama consistently draws out a more vulnerable side of him. Madara deliberately loses money to make him happy, longs for his recognition in battle, and repeatedly gives in to his requests despite obvious misgivings. His reunion with Izuna likewise reveals affection beneath his imposing demeanor 55 400 413 519.

He is perceptive but susceptible to misplaced certainty. He correctly reconsiders whether Tobirama would impersonate Izuna, yet trusts Black Zetsu as his own will and initially rejects proof of that deception 396 420 465 466.
