Background / History

Early Career and Sasuke’s Childhood

Itachi graduates from the Ninja Academy at seven. Izumi celebrates his graduation with dango—including a wasabi-flavored dumpling—and encourages him to retain his passion 93.

He later serves in Hiruzen’s ANBU. When Sasuke befriends Naruto, Itachi proposes bringing his brother to visit weekly. Hiruzen approves but instructs him to conceal Naruto’s identity from the Uchiha clan. A subsequent barbecue outing attracts the extremists’ attention, prompting Itachi to report his failure to maintain secrecy; Hiruzen tells him that Yugao has already explained the situation 27 31.

Despite mounting clan tensions, Itachi continues accompanying Sasuke to school and showing him affection. Naruto notices urgency and worry beneath his restrained behavior, while Itachi’s increasingly pronounced tear-trough lines reflect the strain of the conflict 32 43 44.

Shisui’s Death and Root Leadership

Shisui attempts to stop the Uchiha coup by changing Danzo’s will with Kotoamatsukami. The attempt fails, and he escapes Root with fatal poisoned wounds. Itachi catches him as his Susanoo dissipates. Before dying, Shisui entrusts his remaining eye and his hope for Konoha to Itachi, whose grief awakens the Mangekyō Sharingan 46.

After burying Shisui, Itachi considers killing the entire Uchiha clan, then recoils at the thought of sacrificing his parents, Sasuke, and Izumi. He nevertheless begins embracing the idea that he alone should bear the village’s sins. Hiruzen subsequently places Root under his command 54.

As Root’s new leader, Itachi exchanges eyes with Tenzo and tests their acquired abilities on former Root prisoners. He then leads a force against an extremist gathering at Naka Shrine. Nearly one hundred Uchiha are killed; the operation targets the assembled rebels rather than exterminating the entire clan 61 70.

The following morning, Itachi publicly admits responsibility and declares that “Uchiha Itachi no longer exists.” His departure from the clan is a punishment he chooses for himself, although others describe it as expulsion. Fugaku supports him privately and handles the surviving clansmen’s demands 75 80.

Tobirama’s Student

Itachi encounters Tobirama in his Sealing Space and initially refuses to accept his identity without proof. Tobirama’s demonstration of Flying Thunder God convinces him 77.

After hearing about Shisui, Root, and the purge, Tobirama reassures Itachi and offers to become his adoptive father. Itachi agrees first to a teacher–student relationship; the imagined name “Senju Itachi” belongs to Tobirama’s hopes rather than a confirmed renaming 77.

Tobirama teaches him Flying Thunder God and swordsmanship over several years without reducing their lessons during his own research. Itachi eventually regards him as both a mentor and a father 155 453.

Appearance

Itachi has long, straight black hair, often tied behind his head, and pronounced tear-trough lines that deepen during the Uchiha conflict 32 52 54.

• ANBU attire: Initially wears an ANBU uniform, a fox mask, and a long sword on his back 54.
• Root attire: Commonly appears in black robes with a mask; his mask during his family visit is red and white 75 380.
• Dōjutsu: His eyes turn scarlet when using the Sharingan. Heavy Mangekyō use can leave blood trailing from his eyes 75 318.
• Later appearance: Wears his hair in a ponytail and is described as handsome when introduced to the allied Kage 351.

Personality

Itachi is courteous and restrained, apologizing readily for Sasuke’s behavior and speaking gently to both family and subordinates. His affection for Sasuke persists through the clan crisis: he praises him, accompanies him to school, and leaves Root after a night of brutal work specifically to take him there 27 44 61 159.

His loyalty to Konoha develops into a willingness to shoulder violence and blame personally. Following Shisui’s death, he conceals his plans from Fugaku and accepts the role of the village’s “darkness.” Even much later, he believes that Naruto and Sasuke should remain public heroes while he removes threats from the shadows 54 61 557.

That resolve does not eliminate his guilt. He avoids appearing before Sasuke, remains hurt by his separation from the clan, and hesitates outside his family home. Tobirama’s reassurance and Izumi’s support help him face those bonds again 88 114 380.

With Izumi, his composure is easier to break. He blushes during her Root assessment, becomes embarrassed when she and Tenzo arrange for him to dance, and endures her recurring dango pranks 93 188 259.

Abilities & Skills

Sharingan and Genjutsu

Itachi uses the Sharingan for precise observation and powerful mental attacks.

• Detects Konan’s minute change in expression while questioning her about the masked “Madara” 278.
• Uses Tsukuyomi against Aoi Rokushō during the mission to recover the Sword of the Thunder God 100.
• Subdues five Kara operatives with genjutsu in a single encounter 528.
• His genjutsu is not universally effective: Obito’s Rinnegan breaks an attempted illusion, and Itachi judges Tsukuyomi unsuitable against Isshiki’s superior eyes 317 533.

Amaterasu

His original right Mangekyō produces black flames that continue burning while their target remains 61 362.

• Sets Black Zetsu’s head ablaze, although Zetsu escapes by separating from the burning body 423.
• Removes the oil coating from Gengetsu’s explosive clone, triggering its explosion 452.
• Carefully coats his sword in black flames to counter Sasuke’s lightning-enhanced blade 558.

Kotoamatsukami

• Uses the Yata Mirror to block Obito’s firestorm and Sasuke’s Susanoo sword strike 318 558.

Danzo’s Final Attack

• Intervenes when Danzo attempts to take Sasuke hostage, kicking him away and trapping him in a scarlet illusion 91.
• After Danzo’s consciousness disappears, Itachi taps Sasuke’s forehead and departs. Sasuke promises to grow strong enough to bring him back to atone 91.

Investigating Sasuke

• Suspects that someone has sealed a tailed-beast-like presence inside Sasuke and asks Tenzo to restrain and question him 114.
• Appears when concern for Sasuke’s safety outweighs his reluctance to meet him, discovering that the presence is Izuna. The encounter brings Tobirama and Izuna face-to-face through their respective hosts 117 118.

Akatsuki and the Masked “Madara”

• Brings reinforcements to confront the Akatsuki, questions Konan about the masked man, and fights Deidara and Sasori 278 279 280.
• Later confronts Obito in Takigakure alongside Tenzo, refusing to accept his claim to be Madara without seeing his face 316.
