| Conviction-based, soul-cutting swordsmanship | 287 | After reflecting on his Otherworld counterpart while traveling between worlds, Sakumo recognizes that his swordsmanship embodies his convictions. He manifests this understanding as a crescent slash that confronts Orochimaru’s monstrous form on the level of the soul. The attack leaves him nearly unable to stand from mental exhaustion. |
Background / History
Samurai upbringing and family
Sakumo comes from a samurai family and received a traditional samurai upbringing. His attachment to honor and personal convictions later becomes central to both his character and his swordsmanship 49 287.
His son, Kakashi, was born at the end of Konoha Year 38. Sakumo’s wife died following complications from the birth, leaving him to raise Kakashi alone. He departed for the Eastern Front shortly afterward and spent little time with his son until returning after the campaign 52 82.
Land of Lightning campaign
Sakumo served as Danzō’s adjutant on the Land of Lightning front rather than being deployed to the Land of Wind. Their prolonged service together created genuine mutual trust: Sakumo respected Danzō for sharing his soldiers’ hardships, while Danzō considered him an exceptional embodiment of the Will of Fire 49.
As deputy commander, Sakumo reassured the troops, maintained fighting spirit, undertook solo missions, and executed Danzō’s strategies. His ability to strike through enemy formations forced the Eight-Tails’ jinchūriki to remain on defense, helping prevent Kumogakure from breaking the stalemate 35 51.
| Event | Sakumo’s involvement |
|---|---|
| Assault on the Cloud camp | Fought the partially transformed Eight-Tails alongside Danzō. When they struggled to inflict damage and Cloud reinforcements arrived, they withdrew 38 39. |
| Defense of Takahashi Yū | Drew his blade and stood beside Danzō against the surrounding Cloud army when Yū appeared gravely wounded 45. |
| Pressure mission near Kumogakure | Accompanied Yū to intimidate the village. They defeated the force accompanying A and captured Fukai, a prospective Eight-Tails jinchūriki 51 52 53. |
| Battle against the Two-Tails | Used the opening created by Uchiha Delia’s Sharingan to strike with Moonlight Wheel. The wounded jinchūriki was captured alive 60. |
| Pledge to Danzō | Emotionally embraced Danzō’s cause and swore allegiance upon the Hatake Clan’s crest; the two began addressing one another as brothers 62. |
| Assault on Kumogakure | Advanced immediately behind Yū, using precise sword strikes to kill Cloud shinobi. Later moved to intercept the retreating A at Yū’s request 65 66 67. |
During this campaign, Yū warned Danzō that malicious rumors could drive Sakumo to suicide. Danzō took the possibility seriously and privately resolved to protect his adjutant from political attacks 49 50.
Postwar honors and appointments
The daimyō awarded Sakumo the Hokage Half-Sleeve, an honor that prompted soldiers to speculate about his prospects of becoming Fourth Hokage. Sakumo was deeply moved by the award’s association with ideals and honor 76.
Back in Konoha, a young Sarutobi veteran warned him that rumors accused Danzō of sacrificing soldiers for military merit. Sakumo thanked the informant and promised to tell Danzō. He later joined Yū and the Eastern Front veterans in their procession to the Memorial Stone ceremony 82 86.
Despite his loyalty to Danzō, Sakumo was relieved when the political contest could proceed without fighting fellow Konoha shinobi. After becoming Fourth Hokage, Danzō appointed him Jōnin Commander and ANBU director 91 96.
ANBU operations
As ANBU director, Sakumo led missions to acquire bloodline shinobi and missing-nin for Konoha’s research program. His assignments kept him away from Kakashi for extended periods; while returning from the Land of Earth, he worried about finding a present for his son’s approaching second birthday 104.
| Operation | Outcome |
|---|---|
| Bloodline acquisition | Captured an Iwagakure Explosion Release user after a prolonged ambush operation. He knew captives would undergo preliminary memory examination by Yamanaka operatives 104. |
| Kakuzu’s capture | Reduced Kakuzu to a single Earth-nature heart and held him at swordpoint. After taking 130 million ryō from his scroll, Sakumo stripped away his black threads when Kakuzu resisted 105 106. |
| Assault on Madara | Led jōnin toward the Mountain Graveyard and helped investigate its passages. During the battle, he cut through White Zetsu and cleaved Madara’s Susanoo, but Madara used Izanagi to escape the apparent killing blows 116 117 123. |
| Kaguya infiltration | Entered the Land of Water disguised as a local operative, targeting Shikotsumyaku-bearing bodies and children. His diversion unexpectedly triggered fighting over the Kaguya Clan’s leadership 136 137. |
| Stranded extraction squad | Reached the shore carrying abducted Kaguya and Yuki children, only to discover that Yū had taken the squad’s ship. Sakumo rallied his operatives to attack the Mizukage Building 141. |
| Land of Water withdrawal | Ordered his ANBU to extract Mei Terumi, Zabuza, and the newly abducted Kisame when Konoha requested his return 217. |
| Kirigakure suppression | Tobirama later reported that Sakumo had decapitated the Mizukage and was screening Kirigakure’s hardliners 232. |
| Search for hidden enemies | Confirmed Jigen’s existence through ANBU investigations but found no trace of Black Zetsu. Danzō ordered Root to assist his search 239. |
The Otherworld’s Kakashi
The Otherworld’s Sakumo had died by suicide after being condemned for failing a mission to protect his comrades. Classified records led that world’s Kakashi to conclude that Konoha’s leadership was implicated in his father’s death. The surviving Sakumo later learned that Old Danzō had participated in the machinations against his counterpart 245 257 276.
When Yū explained the situation, Sakumo immediately wanted to help the Otherworld’s Kakashi. Meeting Old Danzō was uncomfortable: Sakumo knew what had happened to his counterpart but had not experienced it himself and did not know how to speak normally with the man responsible 247 276.
Sakumo secretly observed the adult Kakashi with Kisame and Yugiri, assessing his infiltration skills and transplanted Sharingan. He ultimately intervened in a clash, stopping Kakashi’s Chidori and catching Yugiri’s Thunder Swords. Kakashi recognized him as his father, but an emergency message from Sakumo’s home world interrupted their reunion 278 279.
Orochimaru crisis
Sakumo learned that the Uchiha and the Kage had been defeated, the Chakra Cannon was failing, and Madara and Hashirama were struggling to contain a laboratory-created threat. He immediately sought Minato and the Portable Impure World Reincarnation Scroll to arrange a return 279.
Facing Orochimaru’s enormous black monstrous form, Sakumo expressed his newly understood convictions through his blade. His white crescent attack passed through the body without an ordinary physical wound and emerged black, bearing grotesque souls visible to observers with sufficiently strong souls and perception. Madara judged the crisis averted, while the exhausted Sakumo returned to the others and required Danzō’s support 287.
Appearance
- Silver hair, explicitly visible during his confrontation with the partially transformed Eight-Tails 38.
- Handsome face, revealed when he removed his Kirigakure forehead protector during the stranded extraction mission 141.
- Back-mounted short sword, drawn from a sheath behind him 45 60.
- Mission disguises, including Land of Water ANBU clothing and a Kirigakure forehead protector 136.
- Wind-wreathed combat silhouette, at times resembling a long, pale-green blade when he concentrates Wind Release around his body 123.
Personality
Sakumo is gentle, approachable, and courteous toward comrades. He enjoys exceptional prestige among ordinary Konoha shinobi because he cares for his teammates and refuses to abandon them. His samurai upbringing gives him an uncompromising distinction between right and wrong, while his respect for persistent practice leads him to esteem Might Duy even before Duy reveals his full strength 49 51 287.
His warmth does not extend to enemies. Sakumo kills efficiently, endorses surprise attacks rather than noisy declarations of war, and accepts eliminating witnesses to conceal covert operations. Even during ruthless missions, however, he places his own squad’s survival first and alters plans when enemy abilities threaten his operatives 66 94 136.
As a father, he is affectionate, proud, and sometimes comically misguided. He spends his postwar leave carrying Kakashi around the village, yet later presents the remains of Kakuzu to his two-year-old son. Kakashi’s eventual determination to become a cook rather than learn the family’s swordsmanship leaves him so bewildered that he considers remarrying and having another child 82 106 248.
Abilities & Skills
Hatake Swordsmanship
Sakumo’s signature fighting style combines extreme speed, precise targeting, and a chakra-conducting short blade 9 51 66.
- His “White Fang” title refers to strikes so fast that dying enemies see only a lingering white crescent 51.
- Frequently targets the throat, killing with minimal movement and effort 66.
- Can strike with the blade’s back or hilt when attempting to preserve captives, although some back-of-the-blade attacks still prove fatal 52.
- Cleaves Madara’s Susanoo during their confrontation 123.
- Eventually recognizes that every cut he makes—not merely inherited forms—constitutes Hatake Swordsmanship when driven by his convictions 287.
Moonlight Wheel
A powerful sword attack used against the fully transformed Two-Tails 60.
- Builds power with the short blade sheathed, then launches into a spinning attack 60.
- Requires a sufficient opening against such a dangerous target; Delia’s momentary Sharingan restraint provides it 60.
- Leaves the jinchūriki badly wounded but alive for capture 60.
Wind Release and Body Flicker
Sakumo combines Wind Release mastery with the Body Flicker Technique for pursuit, assassination, and rapid repositioning 65.
- Uses intensely transformed wind-nature chakra to sharpen his short blade 66.
- Moves through a crowded battlefield like an unnoticed breeze 67.
- Wraps himself in visible whirlwinds to pierce through White Zetsu formations 123.
- Exercises sufficiently fine control to hold surrounding leaves still while passing through treetops, concealing signs of movement 279.
Conviction-Based Soul Slash
Sakumo’s late breakthrough turns his personal convictions into a blade that confronts the soul itself 287.
- Draws its character from his honor, integrity, uprightness, and resolve 287.
- Locks Orochimaru’s monstrous form into a contest against those convictions 287.
- Passes through the body like a phantom rather than producing an ordinary physical wound 287.
- Inflicts extreme mental exhaustion; afterward, Sakumo’s head feels ready to split and he can barely support himself 287.
- According to Madara, corrupting Sakumo’s convictions could leave him unable to swing his blade again 287.
Infiltration and Fieldcraft
- Covert leadership: Coordinates disguises, diversionary attacks, abductions, and extraction formations 136.
- Hidden Mist Technique: Produces mist to conceal activity around the Kaguya compound, although his hand seals are described as less than practiced 136.
- Counter-infiltration: Secretly tracks Kakashi while impressing Kisame and Yugiri with his concealment skills 278 279.
- Summoning: Uses a ninja dog to obtain messages from Konoha and receive notice of a proposed reverse summoning 217.
- Cooking: Specializes in pan-fried river fish, a skill Yū enthusiastically recommends Kakashi inherit 247.
