Appearance

  • Complexion: Fair skin, made especially pale by the Underground Laboratory’s lighting 100.
  • Clothing: Frequently wears a white laboratory coat or white robes 100 126 133.
  • Tongue: Habitually licks his lips and cheeks; his long tongue becomes a recurring expression of scientific excitement 17 201 273.
  • Voice: Hoarse and raspy, with a distinctive cadence 16 17.
  • Exhaustion: Develops heavy dark circles, gaunt cheeks, protruding cheekbones, and bloodshot eyes during prolonged research 126 259.
  • Uncontrolled form: An enormous black, sludge-like body that deforms under pressure, releases corrosive fluid, and develops spreading white cursed seals while gathering natural energy 281 282 283.

Personality

Orochimaru’s strongest motivation is curiosity. Unknown abilities, rare bloodlines, and the mechanisms of life and death can absorb his attention completely. He initially studies Takahashi Yū’s killing-intent seed by touching it himself, then rapidly works through experimental materials to find a viable container 17. His eventual goal extends beyond longevity to “Ultimate Life,” and he publicly declares the Laboratory’s intention to eradicate death 210 282.

His research is ruthlessly practical. He conducts lethal human experiments, asks for more criminals when subjects are exhausted, and evaluates prospective test subjects by their usefulness. During preparations for Rinne Rebirth, he tells Konan that Nagato’s death would be tolerable provided the Rinnegan remained intact 101 138 260. He also regards sleep and the fragility of the human body as obstacles to research 201 207.

Despite his cold-bloodedness, Orochimaru is socially adept. He remains composed when Takahashi Yū rebuffs him, explains the practical advantages of attending Hiruzen’s meeting, and is genuinely moved when Yū grants him unrestricted access to study his ability 16 17. His enthusiasm for Danzō grows from tangible support: funding, personnel, rare materials, and freedom to pursue his work 97 100.

His attachment to Konoha strengthens under Danzō. Aware that he is being prepared as an emergency successor, he postpones dangerous self-experiments unless Danzō, Sakumo, or Yū can provide a fallback. He recognizes the village’s growing urgency without demanding access to every secret behind it 201.

Background / History

Land of Rain and friendship with Takahashi Yū

During the war, Takahashi Yū’s squad attacks the Land of Earth to draw Iwagakure’s forces away from the Land of Rain, relieving pressure on Orochimaru and his companions. Orochimaru later thanks Yū for giving them time to prepare and minimize their losses. Their subsequent showdown with Hanzō earns them the title of Sannin, although Orochimaru regards the circumstances as humiliating 1 16.

Orochimaru’s acquaintance with Yū predates this return. Whenever Yū catches Jiraiya peeping on Hot Springs Street, beats him, and delivers him to the Military Police Force, Orochimaru comes to bail Jiraiya out. These visits develop into an ongoing friendship 16.

Acting as Hiruzen’s intermediary, Orochimaru persuades Yū to attend a village meeting by explaining that Hot Springs Street could receive benefits comparable to those of a shinobi clan. During the same visit, Yū permits him to investigate his killing-intent seed 17.

Establishment of the Laboratory

Orochimaru loses the Fourth Hokage election to Shimura Danzō by 138 votes to 15. Danzō nevertheless appoints him head of the new Konoha Research Institute, promising whatever funding and personnel he requires and setting a three-month deadline for its establishment 94 97.

He builds the Underground Laboratory behind Tobirama Senju’s face on Hokage Rock as a tribute to the Second Hokage. Its concealed entrance lies in the Hokage Building’s basement, and its isolation from outside sound and daylight particularly appeals to him 100.

Danzō transfers five hundred million ryō to accelerate Hashirama-cell research and supplies access to the Scroll of Seals, Sharingan, and experimental subjects. Hiruko joins the Laboratory under Orochimaru’s supervision, bringing his own forbidden-technique research 100 101 103.

Village leadership and wartime research

When Danzō prepares to confront Madara, he orders Orochimaru to remain behind and try running Konoha. Orochimaru later stands down the defenders responding to Baku’s rampage, sends the summon away, and takes a recovered White Zetsu to the Laboratory 117 126.

His research program expands into Hashirama-cell treatment, bloodline implantation, weapons, and transportation. After Shunji fails to contact the missing Takahashi Yū, Orochimaru orders full production of “Tobirama Number One” and immediate Explosion Release and Lava Release implantation, demanding a “Lava Explosion Brigade” within a week 146. The Hashirama-cell project remains dangerous: Fugaku’s twelfth injection kills him, forcing him to survive through Izanagi 166.

Once Yū returns, Orochimaru resumes plans for more aggressive self-modification. Later findings allow the Laboratory to move toward treatment for people with disabling injuries 201 207.

Resurrection research and the moon crisis

Orochimaru reanimates Tobirama using a White Zetsu sacrifice and extensive cursed-seal safeguards. Tobirama confirms that the Laboratory’s version of Impure World Reincarnation causes less soul wear than his original technique 210 211 212.

The Laboratory subsequently develops a procedure combining reanimation with Rinne Rebirth. Orochimaru summons the Third Raikage from DNA extracted from dried sweat on a barbell, then uses a specially prepared Rinnegan-bearing White Zetsu to restore his living body. The result leads Orochimaru to recognize the possibility of repeatable resurrection through cloning and soul-control methods—and to warn Danzō of the chaos this could unleash 262.

During the moon emergency, Orochimaru proposes combining Ōnoki’s weight reduction, Madara’s powers, and Flying Thunder God: Guiding Thunder. He coordinates the operation through Shunji’s transplanted communication eye and arranges Madara’s reanimation again when his body fails under the strain. Yū provides the physical resistance needed against Super Shinra Tensei 269 272 273.

Experimental disaster and recovery

Orochimaru’s journal records repeated Shinigami summonings, a successful descent of the evil god, and attempts to communicate with the Shinigami through Shunji’s eye. It also records difficulty controlling natural energy and conflict between his experimental path and his body’s apparent movement toward an Ōtsutsuki-like state 280.

He becomes a colossal monster that devastates Konoha and pressures Hashirama and Madara. Although his external behavior appears unconscious, Madara determines that Orochimaru remains aware and is fighting numerous forces within himself 282 283.

Sakumo’s attack carries excess soul fragments out of his body, allowing it to shrink and Orochimaru to regain control. Yū also reveals that the seed incorporated into Orochimaru’s body would let him collapse it from within if necessary 287.

Half a month after the disaster, Orochimaru prepares a mass Impure World Reincarnation using the residents’ stored DNA and sufficient cloned Hashirama cells. Hagoromo appears over the formation and restores the dead with his remaining power, warning that his disappearance will end the Pure Land’s support for the summoning technique 289.

Abilities & Skills

Ninjutsu and Summoning

  • Masters every ninjutsu recorded in the Scroll of Seals 201.
  • Performs rapid hand-seal sequences and later demonstrates one-handed seals during mass reanimation preparations 117 289.
  • Summons snakes from Ryūchi Cave, including Ichikishimahime and the White Snake Sage 111 221.
  • Releases pythons from his sleeves to pursue Tobirama 211.
  • Limits: Exhaustion and chakra depletion remain relevant before his later modifications. After summoning Ichikishimahime and suffering her chakra drain, he cannot perform another ninjutsu 111 112.
  • Contract restrictions: The White Snake Sage severs most of his summoning contracts, retaining access to three Snake Princesses; he nevertheless later summons the Sage herself 201 221.

Biological Research and Surgery

  • Confirms that Hashirama cells replenish Mangekyō Sharingan ocular power 134.
  • Conducts live implantation trials in both Uchiha and ordinary ninja 134 138 166.
  • Contributes findings that remove the Chimera Technique’s previously assumed dependence on favorable celestial conditions 207.
  • Develops bodily modifications that greatly reduce his need for sleep 259.
  • Uses cloning as part of the Laboratory’s biological and resurrection research 262 289.
  • Limits: White Zetsu’s unusually high compatibility makes them unreliable substitutes for human implantation trials; cloned human subjects take too long to produce for Danzō’s immediate needs 138.

Impure World Reincarnation

  • Reanimates Tobirama, Mito, the Third Raikage, and other dead figures 210 244 262.
  • Uses cursed seals to suppress a reanimated subject’s actions; Tobirama initially cannot release the technique despite being its creator 211.
  • Employs a portable reanimation scroll developed by the Laboratory 262.
  • Establishes that tissue from a living person produces no reaction when used for the technique 289.
  • Limits: Mito breaks his control, prompting him to consider improving the technique’s remaining “back door” 244.

Rinne Rebirth Engineering

  • Prepares a White Zetsu body fitted with Hashirama cells and the Rinnegan 262.
  • Designs a cursed seal that leaves the prepared head with only the will to perform Rinne Rebirth 262.
  • Interrupts the procedure when the Third Raikage’s restored body begins receiving excessive life force 262.
  • Deduces that the technique retrieves souls, repairs bodies, and restores life rather than functioning as an incomprehensible equal exchange 262.
  • Proposes combining it with cloning and the Spirit Transformation Technique to enable repeated complete resurrection 262.

Heavenly Transfer Technique

  • Reconstructs and operates the technique seized from Kumogakure, sending Yū to the Land of Water 138 139.
  • Mechanism: Transfers its target through extreme high-speed movement rather than space-time ninjutsu 138.
  • Limit: The tearing force and air friction are fatal to ordinary bodies; Orochimaru identifies Yū as potentially the only person in Konoha able to withstand it at that time 138.

Uncontrolled “Ultimate Life” Form

  • Mutable body: Compresses and stretches like sludge under enormous physical pressure 282.
  • Corrosive fluid: Releases black liquid that Shikaku judges more corrosive than Six-Tails Saiken’s acid 281.
  • Adaptive attacks: Replicates the Laboratory’s Chakra Cannon after being struck several times, firing a widespread barrage 282.
  • Wood Release: Produces a massive Wood Dragon during its battle with Hashirama and Madara 282.
  • Natural energy: Draws in surrounding natural energy as white cursed seals spread across its body 283.
  • Hostile wills: Its chakra carries a torrent of mental wills that overwhelms Madara when he attempts to absorb it 283.
  • Limits: The form is destabilized by competing internal souls and forces. Its incorporated seed also leaves it vulnerable to Yū’s direct intervention 283 287.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Storage scrolls and instruments — Carries materials, a microscope, and other equipment for field experimentation 17.
  • Ryūchi Cave snakeskin — Uses a Snake Princess’s shed skin to contain Yū’s killing-intent seed; it resists erosion better than chakra metal 17.
  • Biological material collection — Includes the White Snake Sage’s shed skin, White Zetsu, Hashirama’s undiluted cells, Madara’s tissue, Sharingan, Nagato’s cells, and Shunji’s left Mangekyō eye 201.
  • Wave Seed — Studies Yū’s seed and eventually incorporates one into his body; his journal records that it can harm the Shinigami 201 280 287.
  • White Zetsu communication apparatus — Uses a White Zetsu implanted with Shunji’s Mangekyō to communicate through physical tokens and investigate contact with the Otherworld 242 272.
  • Research journal — Records his divine-entity experiments and provides crucial evidence about the cause of his rampage 280.

Relationships

  • Takahashi Yū — Friend, research collaborator, and emergency safeguard. Their friendship begins through Jiraiya’s repeated arrests; Yū grants him access to his killing-intent seed. Orochimaru later calls them friends and brothers “as close as flesh and blood” 16 17 201 273.
  • Shimura Danzō — Patron and superior. Funds the Laboratory, supplies personnel and materials, entrusts him with Konoha, and prepares him as an emergency successor 97 100 117 201.
  • Hiruzen Sarutobi — Teacher. Uses Orochimaru as an intermediary with Yū; later opposes the empire’s continued resurrection research 17 281.
  • Hiruko — Childhood friend, former classmate, subordinate, and fellow researcher. Works under Orochimaru on biological modification, bloodline techniques, and resurrection 101 112 207 210.
  • Jiraiya — Fellow Sannin whom he repeatedly bails out of police custody. Jiraiya later helps restrain his monstrous form through the Toad Sages’ genjutsu 16 284.
  • Tsunade — Fellow Sannin. Orochimaru checks her injuries after Yū’s attack and is relieved to find her alive 26.
  • Tobirama Senju — Admired research pioneer whom Orochimaru reanimates. His respect does not prevent him from criticizing Tobirama’s outdated hostility toward the Uchiha 100 210 213.
  • Uchiha Fugaku — Collaborator and Hashirama-cell test subject. Repeated failed implantation trials force Fugaku to rely on Izanagi 134 166.
  • Uchiha Shunji — Provider of the communication eye central to several projects. Orochimaru reverses his dismissive opinion of its usefulness after it contacts Tobirama 133 134 213.
  • Madara Uchiha and Hashirama Senju — Collaborators in the moon operation and opponents during his rampage. Madara recognizes that Orochimaru remains conscious within the monster 269 273 282 283.
  • Hatake Sakumo — Fellow village leader and one of his designated safeguards. Sakumo’s soul-cutting attack helps restore control over his body 201 287.
