History

Second Hokage and Final Campaign

As Second Hokage, Tobirama personally commanded Konoha’s forces against Kumogakure and defeated its main army. He subsequently attended a peace conference intended to establish the Fire–Lightning Alliance Treaty. Kinkaku and Ginkaku disrupted the negotiations with a coup 218.

During the retreat, Shimura Danzō volunteered to remain behind as bait. Tobirama refused to sacrifice a disciple, declaring that the older generation should protect those who would inherit the village. He instructed Danzō to seek Mito Uzumaki’s assessment as a potential successor if he did not return 219.

Tobirama escaped the brothers by using a forbidden technique and trading injury for injury. He then located his disciples through the Flying Thunder God mark on Hiruzen and transported everyone back to Konoha. Because he returned alongside them, his earlier message about Danzō never reached Mito 220.

Succession and Death

Mortally wounded, Tobirama had roughly three hours left with Mito’s assistance. Although Danzō’s views were closest to his own, his original choice had been Hiruzen, whom he believed could carry on Hashirama’s wishes. Hiruzen’s conduct during the crisis disappointed him, and he ultimately left the two candidates to decide between themselves, hoping to avoid a lasting rift 220 221 222.

His final instructions emphasized responsible government and reconciliation with the Uchiha. He warned Homura against factional interests, urged Koharu to exercise independent judgment, and entrusted Kagami with strengthening the bond between his clan and Konoha. He also suggested that Kagami take Tsunade or Nawaki as a student as a visible gesture of Senju support 221 222.

When Tobirama recognized that Kagami was close to awakening the Mangekyō Sharingan, he deliberately severed the chakra connection sustaining his life. His death supplied the final emotional stimulus for Kagami’s awakening, sacrificing approximately two remaining hours of life. His funeral was simple 222.

Research After Death

Tobirama continued developing techniques in the Pure Land and reconciled with his former enemy, Uchiha Izuna. Izuna learned many of his techniques there, including Flying Thunder God. Tobirama also repeatedly summoned himself into the living world to study the other four great villages’ closely guarded techniques 131 151 181.

His research relied in part on a concealed underground laboratory unknown even to Hashirama. Its alloy shielding prevented chakra and presence from leaking outside, while entry required Flying Thunder God and specific sealing techniques 122.

Black Zetsu and the Search for Hashirama

After Black Zetsu reincarnated him, Tobirama accompanied him to the Land of Calamity. Reports initially credited Tobirama with taking control of Tsuchimikado Getsuchō, but their subsequent encounter shows Black Zetsu controlling the young Onmyoji while Tobirama pretended to be controlled himself 84 89 90.

Black Zetsu exposed the deception and offered information about Hashirama, claiming that Asura had influenced him and that he had sealed himself on the moon. Tobirama distrusted this account and refused to undo a seal his brother might have established for the world’s benefit. He broke Black Zetsu’s spatial barrier, then stayed to hear an offer concerning power capable of surpassing Madara 90 91.

While investigating Danzō’s involvement in awakening a Fallen God, Tobirama was detected by Uchiha Gen. He fled to conceal his ability to reincarnate himself, but Gen pursued him. Their brief battle ended with Gen’s Green Lotus Core Flame consuming Tobirama’s entire body despite repeated long-distance teleportation. After regenerating, Tobirama resolved to investigate the Sharingan and ancient history further 97 98.

Izuna and the Ocular Experiments

Tobirama reincarnated Izuna and recruited him to investigate whether Black Zetsu had instigated the old Senju–Uchiha conflict. He placed restraints in Izuna’s body to prevent reckless interference with the living and retained the option of dispelling his reincarnation 122 123.

Experiments with Hashirama’s cells and cultivated Eternal Mangekyō Sharingan revealed that the two powers attracted one another. Tobirama traced both clans to the Sage of Six Paths, identifying the Senju as Asura’s descendants and the Uchiha as Indra’s. After realizing that the resulting Rinnegan transformation served someone else’s plan, he destroyed the eye and chose to seek answers in the past 131 135 136.

Time-Travel Project

In Rōran, Tobirama began building a machine that would use the Ryūmyaku to establish a stable passage through time. Spatial stability was within his expertise, but machinery capable of absorbing, purifying, and regulating the Ryūmyaku’s power proved difficult. He sought Orochimaru’s assistance after inspecting the younger researcher’s laboratories 150 151 157.

Orochimaru’s surveillance footage revealed that Tobirama had overlooked a device with no detectable chakra signature. Tobirama accepted the lesson and resolved to keep pace with modern technology, particularly because similar equipment could expose his clandestine visits to other villages 157 181.

Before departing, he gave Orochimaru the complete Impure World Reincarnation technique and the method for contracting with the Pure Land. He also asked him to look after Rōran’s queen, acknowledging that he had borrowed the Ryūmyaku without permission and that activating the machine could destroy her country 182.

The Buddha Land Revelations

A giant wooden hand intercepted Tobirama and Izuna inside the spacetime tunnel, pulling them into Hashirama’s Buddha Land. Their host was not Tobirama’s own brother but a parallel-world Hashirama whose original timeline had vanished 183 184.

This counterpart explained that their Shinobi World was a projection of a true world, and that its expanding geography and new power systems reflected projected fates from other worlds. Tobirama also learned that Madara and Indra intended to merge 417 remaining worlds into their own—a solution whose world-scale casualties visibly disturbed him 184 185 186 187.

Hashirama’s counterpart revealed that Tobirama’s brother carried an unformed world-seed essential to the plan and had split off his consciousness after sealing himself away. On hearing about a prophesied person who possessed a world, Tobirama recalled Gen’s ability to reach directly into the space-time continuum. His host then offered him a greeting gift, whose nature is not specified in the supplied account 187 188.

Personality

Tobirama is outwardly impassive, mentally disciplined, and difficult to deceive. He maintains a convincing pretense of obedience under Black Zetsu’s scrutiny and uses the threat of leaving negotiations to extract more valuable information 89 90 91.

His curiosity is matched by a willingness to experiment immediately. He becomes openly excited by discoveries concerning the Senju and Uchiha, yet recognizes the limits of his mechanical expertise and seeks qualified help rather than insisting on working alone 131 136 150 151.

His protective instincts coexist with severe pragmatism. He refuses to let a disciple die covering his retreat, but deliberately accelerates his own death to help awaken Kagami’s eyes. Although he professes that the dead should not interfere with the living, the search for truth and threats to the world repeatedly override that principle 181 184 219 222.

Views on the Uchiha

Tobirama’s abrasive remarks about the Uchiha do not amount to a policy of exclusion. He states that he does not dislike the clan and that, as Hokage, he would scrutinize any group capable of threatening Konoha. He believes their intense capacity for love can become either destructive hatred or exceptional devotion to the village 97 222.

He orders his successors to treat the Uchiha normally and provide care rather than suspicion. He even considers Kagami as a future Hokage, rejecting him specifically for the Third’s position because unresolved clan tensions made an immediate Senju-to-Uchiha succession politically dangerous. He regards the Fourth’s term as a possible opportunity instead 108 221 222.

Abilities & Skills

Flying Thunder God and Space-Time Ninjutsu

Tobirama originated the Flying Thunder God Technique and developed an extensive range of spatial applications. After fighting him, Gen judges his space-time mastery superior to Minato’s 52 98.

  • Teleportation: Repeated jumps carry him tens of thousands of kilometers across national borders 98.
  • Group extraction: Retrieves his disciples and transports them back to Konoha 220.
  • Attack displacement: Kunai transport an incoming Susanoo blade away on contact 98.
  • Spatial refuge: Observes opponents from a node inside the space-time continuum 98.
  • Spatial cutting: Spatial Slash breaks a space-sealing talisman barrier; a Space Blade destroys his experimental eye 91 136.
  • Shared hyperspace: Constructs a Flying Thunder God Hyperspace with Izuna for concealed observation 150.
  • Limits: Stabilizing a passage does not guarantee accurate temporal anchoring. He admits uncertainty about the time-travel machine’s destination 181.

Impure World Reincarnation

Tobirama possesses a complete version of Impure World Reincarnation distinct from the incomplete, backdoor-filled technique he deliberately left behind 182.

  • Self-summoning: Can bring himself out of the Pure Land without relying on a living summoner 97 181.
  • Regeneration: Reassembles from a tiny scrap of paper after Gen’s flames destroy his entire body 98.
  • Chakra supply: His reincarnated body permits repeated teleportation without concern for chakra depletion 98.
  • Control safeguards: Places restrictions in Izuna’s reincarnated body and can dispel the technique 123.
  • Longevity: Proposes waiting in the past if time travel fails, though Orochimaru questions whether their souls could endure thousands of years 181.

Sharingan and Biological Research

Tobirama studies ocular power, emotional awakening, and the relationship between Senju and Uchiha biology 23 131 136.

  • Reproduces advanced Sharingan using Izuna’s eye power and cultivation methods 181.
  • Preserves living tissue supplied by Hashirama for later experimentation 131.
  • Identifies the attraction between Hashirama’s cells and cultivated Eternal Mangekyō Sharingan 131 135.
  • Recognizes Kagami’s approaching Mangekyō awakening from the behavior of his eyes 222.

Bringer-of-Darkness Technique

  • Creates an oppressive darkness that renders ordinary sight useless 98.
  • Fails to contain Gen, who tears through the technique using Night of Mitsu 98.

Water Release and Chakra Sensing

  • Possesses a rare special single-attribute talent associated with releasing elemental ninjutsu without hand seals 20.
  • Produces a surge of water to envelop himself, though it cannot extinguish Green Lotus Core Flame 98.
  • Uses his sensory range to select distant teleportation destinations and inspect locations for chakra-based surveillance 98 157.
  • Cannot detect ordinary surveillance equipment solely through chakra sensing 157.

Equipment & Research Facilities

  • Space-Time Leap Machine — Ryūmyaku-powered device completed with Orochimaru’s assistance 181 182.
  • Flying Thunder God marks — Exchanges marks with Izuna; Izuna’s mark manifests on Tobirama’s neck as a black pattern resembling the Uchiha crest 183.

Relationships

  • Hashirama Senju — Older brother. Tobirama pursues the truth behind his disappearance while repeatedly questioning his judgment outside combat 91 184 187.
  • Uchiha Izuna — Former lifelong enemy, reconciled friend, and investigative partner. Learns Tobirama’s techniques in the Pure Land and accompanies him through time 131 151 183.
  • Orochimaru — Research collaborator whom Tobirama recognizes as an exceptional junior. Receives Tobirama’s complete reincarnation technique and encouragement not to remain burdened by Nawaki’s fate 151 182.
  • Hiruzen Sarutobi — Disciple nicknamed “Monkey” and original succession choice. Tobirama later tells Orochimaru that Hiruzen is no longer the person he once knew 182 221.
  • Shimura Danzō — Disciple whose views most closely matched his own. His willingness to serve as bait earns Tobirama’s approval as a potential successor 219 221.
  • Kagami Uchiha — Trusted disciple whom Tobirama considers a possible future Hokage and entrusts with Uchiha–Konoha reconciliation 221 222.
  • Mito Uzumaki — Sister-in-law. Prolongs his life after his final battle and is entrusted with Tsunade and Nawaki’s care 220.
  • Tsunade and Nawaki — Grandniece and grandnephew. Their welfare concerns him at his deathbed, and he proposes their apprenticeship under Kagami as a bridge between the clans 108 220 222.
  • Uchiha Gen — Initially an object of covert observation, then a dangerous opponent whose unusual powers force Tobirama to reassess his knowledge of the Uchiha 97 98 188.
  • Black Zetsu — Untrustworthy bargaining partner and suspected instigator of the Senju–Uchiha conflict. Tobirama resists his control and investigates his claims 90 91 123.
  • Madara Uchiha — Rival whom Tobirama nevertheless respects. He privately supported Madara’s proposal to unify the great villages, but sided publicly with Hashirama 186.
