Rinnegan awakening — before the main story 45 Already awakened when Black Zetsu approached him claiming to embody his will. After transplanting the eyes into Nagato, Madara retains enough ocular power to manifest phantom Rinnegan and create six inferior Limbo Clones.
Freedom from his former time shortage 84 Credits something obtained from an Ōtsutsuki with making his remaining time largely irrelevant. Restores a burned and severed hand instantaneously rather than through visible regeneration.
Restoration to his prime — combat transformation 269 Reverses his aged body into a tall, muscular, black-haired form while temporal threads move around him.
Layered, stellar-scale Susanoo — combat escalation 271 Forms an additional colossal Susanoo over his existing one. Its body exceeds a star in size, and it wields two stars reshaped into flaming metal truncheons.

Background / History

Madara and Hashirama Senju brought the feuding Uchiha and Senju together and founded Konoha. Madara also supplied the village’s name. His later conflict with Hashirama became a lasting source of fear: Hiruzen Sarutobi remembered Madara as someone who had nearly destroyed the Land of Fire 63 90.

Their decisive battle took place in the Buddhist Realm Alternate Dimension. Hashirama returned afterward, but disappeared less than half a month later after entrusting Konoha to Tobirama. Madara had favored eliminating the other four great shinobi villages to achieve unification, a proposal Tobirama privately supported despite publicly siding with Hashirama 90 186.

After awakening the Rinnegan, Madara rejected Black Zetsu’s claim to be the manifestation of his will. He regarded peace through an all-encompassing genjutsu as temporary and meaningless. His ambition instead became Ascension: obtaining omniscience and omnipotence so that peace would be something he could create at will 45.

Appearance

  • Initial appearance: An elderly, deeply wrinkled man with loose, withered flesh, seated in a cold stone chair. Thick tubular vessels pierce his back inside his underground cavern 45.
  • Eyes: Scarlet Three-Tomoe Sharingan overlaid with phantom Rinnegan; during Kuebiko, the Sharingan become grayish-white beneath the Rinnegan images 45 83.
  • Clothing and hair: Appears outdoors in black robes with long black hair flowing over his shoulders 109 195.
  • Prime form: Can reverse his aging, removing his wrinkles, turning white hair black, straightening his frame, and restoring firm musculature 269.
  • Susanoo: Uses azure armor and a deep-blue colossal form 115 271.

Personality

Madara is proud, domineering, and intensely competitive. He dismisses most contemporary shinobi as rabble, but becomes openly delighted when an opponent can challenge him. Sakumo’s breakthroughs and Gen’s resistance make him more excited rather than resentful; his spar with Gen revives the exhilaration he once felt fighting Hashirama 45 205 272.

His pride includes respect for another Uchiha’s independent will. He initially rejects Gen as a successor partly because Gen has already developed convictions of his own, which Madara refuses to insult. He likewise frees Hikari from her status as a clan weapon and leaves her next actions to her, although her freedom also serves his plans 45 116.

Madara is willing to manipulate children, endanger their loved ones, and sacrifice entire worlds. His justification is survival: he considers the World Consciousness a parasite whose continued existence threatens everyone else. His attachment to Hashirama nevertheless complicates the Ascension Plan, which requires the power of the tree sustaining his old friend 122 186 197 268.

Ascension Plan

Madara and Indra seek to escape a dilemma in which both the World Consciousness’s repeated annihilation of civilization and the world’s eventual maturation lead to destruction. Their proposed escape is to merge the remaining parallel worlds, seize the World Consciousness’s authority, and transform the Shinobi World into something capable of surviving independently 186.

Component Function
487 parallel worlds Sacrificed and merged into the current Shinobi World to increase its power and accelerate its maturation 122 186.
Obito’s Kamui Connects Obitos across timelines and supplies the anchors needed to link their worlds. A missing Obito means a missing world-anchor 136 197.
Collective Six Paths Rinne Sharingan power Roughly 160–170 pairs are intended to overwrite the Will of the World for an instant, allowing Madara and his collaborators to replace or forcibly merge with it 186.
World Tree power Required to complete the merger, creating a conflict between the plan and Hashirama’s survival 122.
The seed in Hashirama’s heart Contains an unformed world and offers the possibility that the ascended world can sprout into a new tree 187.
Intended result Obtain the Will of the World’s omnipotence and achieve a higher-order existence called Ascension 122 186.

The plan remains a gamble rather than a guaranteed salvation. A parallel-world Hashirama explains that failure could bring destruction sooner or allow them to take the World Consciousness down with them 187.

Alternative Routes

  • Other-world invasion: Madara also investigates invading outside worlds, treating Ascension as one possible escape route rather than the only one 272.
  • Nagato’s bloodline: Places his Rinnegan in Nagato to exploit his Uzumaki heritage as a means of anchoring an unknown world connected to the shinigami 272.
  • Fate-guided recruitment: Uses the Rinnegan’s connection to fate to draw unusual people toward Nagato, hoping some will prove useful 273.
  • Gen’s proposal: Takes an interest in Gen’s claim that they possess power beyond an ordinary divine technique capable of confronting the World Consciousness 268 273.

Abilities & Skills

Sharingan and Rinnegan

Madara retains extraordinary ocular power even after giving his physical Rinnegan to Nagato 45.

  • Overlays phantom Rinnegan on his Three-Tomoe Sharingan without visibly passing through the Mangekyō stage 272.
  • Creates six Limbo Clones, each bearing tangible Rinnegan; considers them substandard because he is using residual ocular power 45.
  • Sees the separate soul concealed inside Rin and recognizes it as the missing alternate-world Obito 196.
  • Conceals Nagato’s presence from most people, with exceptions for certain individuals connected to him by fixed ties of fate 272.
  • Uses fate-linked Rinnegan power to guide Nagato toward unusual individuals 273.

Yomotsu and Kuebiko

Madara uses Yomotsu connections to investigate Gen through a genjutsu projection, then invokes Kuebiko when Gen’s green flame interferes 83.

  • Perceives silvery-white threads connected to the projection and rewinds its recorded events 83.
  • Recognizes the green flame burning those threads as possible interference from Gen’s future self 83.
  • Employs Kuebiko to contest the flame with overwhelming ocular power 83.
  • Does not emerge unscathed: his palm is left burned like dry wood, and White Zetsu remarks that he has lost another portion of his time 84.

Time Manipulation

Madara can alter time from the scale of an underground chamber to an entire stellar battlefield 116 270.

  • Time stop: Freezes Hikari and her surroundings before she can kill herself with an Amaterasu spear 116.
  • Reversal: Restores his youthful body and sends an approaching sea of flame backward along its own temporal flow 269.
  • Event erasure: Removes the instant in which an attack damages him, preventing the injury from becoming an established event 269 270.
  • Future extraction: Tears out possible futures in which Gen loses and attempts to merge them into the present 270.
  • Temporal relocation: Moves his true body to an earlier point in time to avoid a causal chain 271.
  • Acceleration: Compresses hundreds of millions of Susanoo weapon swings into a single instant 271.

Limits and counters:

  • Gen’s Golden Experience Requiem prevents Madara from completing both event erasure and the imposition of futures ending in Gen’s defeat 270.
  • Temporal relocation fails to protect him when Gen applies conceptual damage directly to the entity called Madara Uchiha 271.
  • Madara acknowledges that Hashirama handles time somewhat better than he does 270.

Space Manipulation

  • Travels through spatial fissures and performs short-range spatial shifts during close combat 115 203.
  • Destabilizes the space around Obito to counter Kamui, then pierces and bisects him 199.
  • Forcibly moves his confrontation with Gen into a vast starry expanse 269.
  • Transports two distant stars into his Susanoo’s hands and reshapes them into weapons through ocular power 271.

Naruson Domain

Madara’s Naruson Domain transforms the battlefield with crimson chakra, charred fissures, floating rubble, and a dark-red sky. A phantom divine steed appears behind him and enhances his halberd 199.

  • Concentrates the domain’s chakra and oppressive force into the Fang Tian Huaji 200.
  • Produces scarlet chains that combine sealing with soul-tearing effects 202.
  • Empowers halberd-generated slashing waves to tear through space 202.
  • Can be broken: the domain has collapsed by the time Sakumo’s battle with him returns to the open sea 205.

Susanoo

  • Manifests azure armor while traveling through a spatial fissure 115.
  • Wields a Fang Tian Huaji through Susanoo when manipulating future timelines 270.
  • Layers a larger Susanoo over the existing construct, producing a deep-blue giant larger than a star 271.
  • Uses star-forged twin truncheons in a clash against Gen’s flame-enhanced Perfect Susanoo 271 272.

Halberd Combat and Flame Techniques

Madara combines long-weapon reach, spatial movement, immense physical force, and flame attacks 202 203.

  • Force Splits Mount Hua: A crushing overhead halberd strike 203.
  • Blaze Release: Great Fire Annihilation: Floods the domain with a sea of intense flame 203.
  • Unmatched Under Heaven: Strikes the ground to erupt a massive pillar of fire, then exploits his airborne opponent’s position with a descending blow 203.
  • Flame-wreathed halberd waves: Launches successive ranged attacks or broad sweeping cuts 202 203.
  • Thrown halberd: Hurls the Fang Tian Huaji downward to pin a fallen opponent 203.

Resistance and Restoration

  • His chakra cannot be controlled by Hikari’s Yachihoko 115 116.
  • Emerges unharmed after six Truth-Seeking Orbs explode against his chest 199.
  • Overpowers the Ten-Tails jinchūriki Obito and forcibly ends his Six Paths-Baryon Mode 199 201.
  • Instantly restores his damaged hand and later removes a sword wound by passing his palm over it 84 205.
  • Admits that Gen’s green-flame killing technique could defeat him in a genuine death match 272.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Fang Tian Huaji — An ocular-power-formed halberd used for close combat, flame attacks, domain-enhanced strikes, and Susanoo techniques 115 200 270.
  • Stellar truncheons — Two crimson, burning metal weapons made by transporting and reshaping distant stars; wielded by his colossal Susanoo 271.
  • Stone Tablet — A vine-covered tablet at the former Uzushio Village site. Madara activates its sealing formulas with Rinnegan power to enter the space containing the giant tree and Hashirama 121.

Relationships

  • Hashirama Senju — Co-founder, rival, and deeply valued old friend. Madara criticizes Hashirama’s self-sacrifice, yet is visibly conflicted by the possibility that Ascension will cost him Hashirama 63 121 122.
  • Izuna Uchiha — Younger brother. Madara senses his danger from afar and immediately prepares to intervene before the spatial disturbance settles 123 163.
  • Indra — Principal collaborator in the Ascension Plan; Madara also invokes Indra’s name when releasing Hikari from her role as a weapon 116 186.
  • Obito Uchiha — Chosen successor and indispensable world-anchor. Madara values his loving nature and space-time constitution, while using threats to his loved ones to stimulate his eyes’ evolution 45 136 197.
  • Uchiha Gen — Initially dismissed as unsuitable for succession; later recognized as an exceptional rival whose talent surpasses Madara’s own. Their spar ends without a winner 45 270 272.
  • Uchiha Hikari — Frees her from her seal and grants her autonomy, while expecting her Yachihoko to help provoke the World Consciousness 116.
  • White Zetsu — Intelligence operative and subordinate; monitors targets and controls the Third Mizukage on Madara’s behalf 45 136.
  • Black Zetsu — Distrusted schemer whose claim to embody Madara’s will is rejected. Madara nevertheless considers exploiting him to help Obito master Yin-Yang Release 45.
  • Nagato — Rinnegan recipient and deliberately selected vessel for interworld anchoring, shinigami-related plans, and fate-guided recruitment 272 273.
  • Hatake Sakumo — An opponent whose swordsmanship and growth rekindle Madara’s enthusiasm for battle 203 205.
  • Tobirama Senju — Investigates Madara’s activities and realizes that his Rinnegan research has been manipulated as part of another plan 91 136.

Story Role / Major Arcs

Surveillance and Gen’s Emergence

From the Mountain Graveyard, Madara responds to renewed war by sending six Limbo Clones to watch Obito. He initially considers Gen’s potential limited, but revises his assessment after learning of Gen’s Mangekyō Sharingan and encountering the green flame protecting his secrets across time 45 83 84.

Hikari’s Release and the World Merger

Madara enters Hikari’s sealed chamber, stops her suicide attempt, and declares that she will no longer exist as an Uchiha weapon. He then visits Hashirama, who is rooted in the God Tree, and announces his intention to replace “Him” 115 116 121.

An invisible counterpart with Madara’s voice reports that an Obito has disappeared from another world. Madara orders preparations for the merger of 487 worlds to accelerate. He later uses Kirigakure to search for the missing Obito and plans to draw him out by putting Rin on the battlefield 122 136.

Obito’s Awakening and Sakumo’s Intervention

Madara confronts Team Minato, discovers the alternate Obito inside Rin, and incapacitates Obito and Kakashi. Obito subsequently awakens Kamui, activating the anchor Madara needs, then acquires the Ten-Tails’ power and attacks him 196 197 199.

Madara defeats both Obito’s complete jinchūriki form and Six Paths-Baryon Mode before Sakumo intervenes. Their battle escalates through halberd combat, flame techniques, and Sakumo’s breakthrough in Sword Force 199 201 203 205.

The aftermath reveals that the fighting Madara and a gray-clad Madara are separate figures. The gray-clad counterpart offers to revive the combatant through Divine Technique: Rinne Rebirth, but he declines because a true resurrection would expose him to the World Consciousness’s corrective mechanism 205.

Unification and the Spar with Gen

Madara does not interfere with Gen’s unification campaign, but refuses to actively help him. Kirigakure remains under his control until the Land of Water surrenders and joins Konoha 265 268.

At the Valley of the End, Madara and Gen discuss killing the World Consciousness before beginning a spar. Their fight expands into a stellar battlefield and pits Madara’s temporal erasure against Gen’s causality manipulation and Golden Experience Requiem. It ends without a winner; afterward, Madara explains Nagato’s role in his other-world experiments 268 269 270 271 272.

Warning of the Deity’s Countermoves

Madara later visits Konoha to observe the new inheritor of Indra’s chakra and discovers that the shinigami inside Kushina is gone. He warns Gen that the deity has begun acting, that Danzō has joined its side, and that attacks may be arranged through both the past and future 276 277.
