Background / History

Early Career and the Hyuga Squad

Tsunade was taught by both Hiruzen Sarutobi and the Second Hokage. By Konoha Year 36, she was already a capable jonin, though she had not yet reached her later strength as one of the Sannin. The Senju Clan had disbanded and integrated into the village, and neither she nor Nawaki continued using its surname 3 8.

An arrangement between Hyuga Hiashi’s father and the Hokage placed Tsunade in command of Hiashi, Hizashi Hyuga, and Hyuga Akira. The assignment was intended to give Hiashi protected mission experience; it did not initially establish a teacher–student relationship with any of the three 1 2 7.

Their first assignment was a C-rank bandit mission. Tsunade repeatedly stopped disputes over the Hyuga Main and Branch Families, insisting that all three answered to her while serving in the squad. At the bandit hideout, she left the fighting to her subordinates as a training exercise, reserving intervention for emergencies 2 3.

Protecting and Recruiting Akira

After Akira was confined for attacking Hiashi, Tsunade visited Hyuga Masayuki and requested his release for special medical training. Masayuki agreed rather than antagonize her. Her intervention was largely motivated by Akira’s friendship with Nawaki, although she justified it simply by calling Akira her subordinate 7 8.

Tsunade warned Akira that this arrangement could keep the clan at bay for no more than a year. Medical training would provide the justification for her protection, not a permanent solution to the Caged Bird Seal 8.

When Akira’s paid fighting ring drew Hiruzen’s attention, Tsunade took him to Konoha Hospital to keep him under supervision. Her initial intention to provide nominal instruction changed after he learned the A-rank Mystical Palm Technique almost immediately—something other learners had needed months to accomplish 12 13.

Recognizing his talent, she offered him an apprenticeship. When he refused, she knocked him unconscious and imposed a schedule of hospital work during the day and study at her house at night. Her case records and research helped him become Konoha Hospital’s second-best medical ninja, still below Tsunade herself 13 14.

Land of Rain Deployment

As foreign shinobi increasingly entered the Land of Fire, Tsunade received orders to help establish defensive lines and treat casualties. She subsequently led the Hyuga squad on an A-rank supply mission toward the Land of Rain 14 19.

During an ambush, she quickly defeated the enemy jonin, Xi’an, then returned in time to save Hiashi from a chunin and treat his injuries. She identified the attackers as Iwagakure shinobi after finding a concealed forehead protector, although Akira privately inferred Sunagakure origins from their loot 20 21.

When the squad encountered a larger force containing at least five jonin, Tsunade first attempted a detour. Once an enemy sensor detected their withdrawal, she ordered the team to scatter, prioritize survival over supplies, and rendezvous within seven days 22.

Squad Dissolution and Intelligence Planning

At Konoha’s military camp, Tsunade intervened when Hiashi activated Akira’s Caged Bird Seal. She backed Akira, warned Hiashi that she would report his conduct to his father, and ordered both boys confined. Declaring the squad unworkable, she announced that it would disband after the supply handover 26.

Akira asked to remain in custody for a year, prompting Tsunade to warn that she would personally deal with him if he became a rogue ninja. Hiruko subsequently became his jonin instructor, a position distinct from Tsunade’s earlier role as mission commander and her medical apprenticeship 27.

Tsunade then joined Jiraiya and Orochimaru in planning intelligence operations concerning the Land of Rain. Following Orochimaru’s proposal to infiltrate Amegakure, she participated in selecting Akira to gather peripheral intelligence 27 28.

Personality

Tsunade is blunt, impatient, and quick to use force when provoked. Akira’s defiance and deliberate rumor-mongering repeatedly exhaust her patience; she also enforces his medical apprenticeship through physical intimidation. Nevertheless, her decision to train him seriously follows a genuine recognition of his talent and Konoha’s need for medical specialists 12 13.

Her protectiveness has limits and does not override her duties to Konoha. She shields Akira from clan pressure but warns him against desertion. With Nawaki, she wants safety without dictating his entire life: despite concerns about Akira’s influence, she refuses to forbid their friendship 8 18 27.

She is deeply committed to treating casualties. Before deployment, her workload keeps her away from home, and she uses active treatment sessions to instruct other practitioners rather than postponing teaching until the hospital is quiet 11 13.

Abilities & Skills

Medical Ninjutsu

Tsunade invented Medical Ninjutsu and the Mystical Palm Technique. Her work brought shinobi practitioners into a hospital previously staffed by ordinary doctors, including injured shinobi who could no longer continue their former duties 12.

• Treats severe injuries and complicated cases beyond the capabilities of the hospital’s less experienced practitioners 13.
• Maintains extensive case records and original research materials for instruction 13.
• Remains superior to Akira after his rapid rise to second-best medical ninja at Konoha Hospital 14.

Mystical Palm Technique

Her A-rank healing technique requires exceptionally stable chakra control and careful adjustment to the patient’s condition 13.
