Personality
Murakami frequently wears a foxlike smile, even when threatening or injuring others. He treats strength and rank as the basis of authority: he breaks Akira’s arm to enforce respect, permits a subordinate to bully him, and later tells him that stronger shinobi receive respect within Hanzo’s base. However, he refuses to let the same subordinate manipulate him with an unsupported accusation against Muyu 43 44 48.
His loyalty to Hanzo outweighs his fear of the great ninja villages. Although visibly uncertain about fighting Konoha shinobi, he accepts the mission and declares himself willing to die for Hanzo. Serving directly beside Hanzo is his lifelong ambition, making him openly jealous when the newcomer Muyu receives that assignment 56 62.
Murakami also values Amegakure’s talent and fallen personnel. He considers Muyu a potential future jōnin and mourns Ameki and Yuka as village heroes. His devotion ultimately becomes suicidal: trapped by Akira, he detonates explosive tags in the name of Amegakure and Hanzo 44 59 166.
Abilities & Skills
Bee Summoning and Control
Murakami’s main fighting method uses summoned bees, released through markings beneath his sleeve and in clouds of white mist. He controls them in large formations rather than relying on a decisive finishing technique 58 59.
- Swarm restraint: Shapes bees into a giant hand to seize an opponent and surrounds targets to restrict escape 58 59.
- Poison: A sting poisons Sarutobi Shōshi; an antidote pill suppresses the poison without fully resolving his predicament 58 59.
- Destructive feeding: His swarm gnaws away surrounding trees during the battle with Shōshi 59.
- Observation and communication: Uses bees to inspect the Shadow World and attempts to send information through concealed bees 165 166.
- Limits: Fire Release destroys large numbers of bees. Akira’s Byakugan detects his hidden messengers, which Akira burns before they can escape 58 59 166.
Bee Clone Technique
Murakami gathers bees into copies of himself that repeatedly attack an encircled opponent 59.
- Replaces destroyed clones with fresh bees, steadily draining the target’s stamina and chakra 59.
- Favors prolonged attrition; he explicitly lacks ninjutsu capable of deciding the fight in one blow 59.
Water Body Flicker Technique
- Leaves by turning his figure into a stream of water that falls to the ground 62.
Physical Combat and Weapon Handling
- Moves behind the early-story Akira faster than Akira can properly follow and breaks his arm with a joint hold 43.
- Intercepts Akira’s attempted killing blow against the overweight chūnin and knocks Akira into a wall 44.
- Throws a kunai close enough to cut the chūnin’s ear as a warning against trying to manipulate him 44.
Operational Security
- Conceals Hanzo’s location through repeated forest detours, stretching a two-day journey into five days 47.
- Blindfolds Akira and guides him with wire during the final approach. These measures fail against Akira’s concealed Byakugan 47.
- Investigates Muyu’s background and receives orders to intensify surveillance when his behavior raises suspicion 44 47 56.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Kunai — used to threaten the overweight chūnin 44.
- Sleeve markings — strange runes revealed immediately before summoning a large bee swarm 58.
- Map, black cloth, and wire — used while escorting Akira to Hanzo’s concealed base 47.
- Explosive tags — concealed throughout his clothing and activated for his final suicide attack 166.
History
Recruiting and Supervising Muyu
Murakami arrives after Kusen’s remaining subordinates attack Hyuga Akira, who is operating under the identity of Muyu. Murakami and his companion kill the two fleeing genin, treating their attack on a superior as a grave offense. He then breaks Akira’s arm to establish the hierarchy and allows an overweight subordinate to confront him 43 44.
When Akira retaliates, Murakami prevents him from killing the man and announces that he will escort him to Hanzo. He privately recognizes Muyu’s intelligence, aggression, and potential to become a jōnin. During the overweight chūnin’s subsequent revenge attack, Murakami again saves him, although Akira kills the two accompanying genin 44 45.
Murakami escorts Akira through a deliberately confusing forest route to Hanzo’s concealed base. After Akira obtains permission to postpone a mission while practicing ninjutsu, Murakami assigns him a sealed room. Akira’s almost immediate reversal—claiming to have completed the technique and requesting a mission—arouses his suspicion 47 48 55 56.
Ambush of the Konoha Squad
Under orders conveyed by Hanzo’s double, Murakami leads Muyu, Ameki, and Yuka against a Konoha squad consisting of one jōnin and three chūnin. The team must conceal its Amegakure affiliation and monitor Muyu. Following Akira’s proposal, they approach as merchants, detonate their wagon, and pose as Iwa ninja 56 57.
The Konoha squad’s role-switching deception initially draws Murakami after a chūnin disguised as the leader. Realizing the mistake, he returns and engages the actual jōnin, Sarutobi Shōshi, with his bees. He wears down the wounded opponent but is subsequently misled by a shadow clone; Akira kills Shōshi before Murakami returns 58 59.
Murakami and Akira carry Ameki and Yuka’s bodies back to the base. Unaware that Akira secretly killed both wounded Rain shinobi, Murakami honors them as heroes and promises to report Muyu’s achievements to Hanzo 58 59 60.
Supporting Hanzo’s Rise
After Hanzo promotes Muyu to chūnin, Murakami helps him collect equipment, explains intelligence access, and introduces the long-term mission system. His duties as Muyu’s guide end on a jealous note when Hanzo personally assigns the newcomer as his guard 61 62.
Murakami later stands among Hanzo’s assembled jōnin as Hanzo prepares to take control of Amegakure. When Akira answers Hanzo’s summons, Murakami guides him to the faction’s meeting place 68 69.
Final Encounter and Death
Two years later, Murakami leads Rain shinobi who attempt to take Yahiko, Nagato, and Konan to Amegakure. Akira intervenes, drawing Murakami and his bees into the Shadow World. By briefly displaying Muyu’s face, Akira reveals that the supposed Uchiha infiltrator was actually Hyuga Akira. Murakami recognizes the “Flame Demon” and attempts to flee, but Akira blocks his escape 165 166.
Murakami deduces that Hanzo is Akira’s target and tries to send information through hidden bees. Akira destroys them and uses genjutsu to knock him unconscious. After awakening and seeing Nagato’s victory outside, Murakami detonates the explosive tags concealed in his clothes. Akira survives by becoming blue-black flame and burns the final bee attempting to escape. Hanzo subsequently receives a report that Murakami has gone missing 165 166 167.
Relationships
- Hanzo — Leader and object of unwavering devotion. Murakami dreams of serving beside him and ultimately sacrifices himself in Hanzo’s name 56 62 166.
- Hyuga Akira / Muyu — Recruit, subordinate, and temporary teammate whom Murakami considers talented but dangerously aggressive. Their final encounter reverses their original power imbalance, leaving Murakami trapped and unable to report Akira’s intentions 43 44 56 165 166.
- Ameki and Yuka — Chūnin under his command during the Konoha interception mission. He mourns their deaths without learning Akira killed them 56 58 59.
- Unnamed overweight chūnin — Subordinate whom he repeatedly saves from Akira, but also threatens and dismisses as useless 43 44 45.
Death Drops
Akira’s system credits Murakami’s death to him despite the suicide explosion, awarding 8,448 experience and three items. These are loot rewards, not abilities or equipment Murakami is shown using 166.
| Drop | Effect / Description |
|---|---|
| Nanika’s Wish List Fragment | One fragment, displayed as 1/10 166. |
| Chimera Ant Bracer | Increases strength by 500 and agility by 500 166. |
| Forced Growth | Sacrifices all current levels to obtain a max-level character with every skill maxed for one day. Akira declines to learn the level-resetting skill 166 167. |
