Organization and Culture
Leadership
- No formal clan head in Chapter 268: Fugaku commands the clan through his position as chief of the Konoha Military Police Force rather than an occupied clan-head office 268.
- Hereditary police leadership: Tobirama Senju entrusted the position to Fugaku’s ancestor, a committed Hokage supporter. The office subsequently passed down to Fugaku 268.
- Later form of address: Akira calls Fugaku “Uchiha Clan Head” when inviting him to help change the shinobi world, although no formal appointment is shown in that passage 291.
Integration into Konoha
- Clan-based teams: Uchiha shinobi initially serve in teams assigned within the clan. Chizuru’s placement under Jiraiya is unusual enough to surprise Akira 172.
- Wartime reassignment: Personnel shortages lead Hiruzen Sarutobi to place more Uchiha in mixed teams and redeploy them beyond their established front 172 200.
- Restricted connections: Akira’s reinforcement force contains one hundred Uchiha and two hundred civilian shinobi. The arrangement deliberately avoids building too many ties between the Uchiha and other clans 200.
- Open compound: Unlike the walled-off Hyuga residential area, the Uchiha compound remains open. The narration distinguishes their political estrangement from an unwillingness to be understood by outsiders 139.
- Support for talent: The clan backs its promising shinobi rather than restraining them internally; their principal obstacle is suppression by Konoha High Command 77.
Values and Reputation
The Uchiha strongly admire combat ability. Chizuru’s hostility toward Akira turns into enthusiasm upon learning that he is the Flame Demon, while frontline Uchiha revere his extraordinary Fire Release despite his Hyuga background 172 200.
Clan pride can also produce overconfidence. Tenkai and his companions expect easy victory over presumed Mist Ninja immediately before Akira’s ambush kills him 145.
Abilities & Skills
Sharingan
The clan’s signature ocular ability provides exceptional perception and supports powerful genjutsu 145 146.
- Dynamic vision: Three-tomoe users can detect and evade distant attacks, making ordinary long-range sniping less reliable against them 145 180.
- Trauma-driven awakening: Sōsuke awakens and rapidly develops his Sharingan while witnessing the deaths of his teacher and teammates 94.
- Eye-contact danger: Hiruko warns Akira against meeting an Uchiha’s gaze. A shinobi-world saying advises fleeing a one-on-one encounter with a three-tomoe Uchiha 145.
- Advanced forms: The Mangekyō Sharingan is identified as a particularly dangerous source of the clan’s potential power 252.
- Not invulnerable: Tenkai dies before his activated Sharingan can save him, while coordinated Root attacks overwhelm other users 145 180.
Fire Release
Fire Release is a clan specialty taught to its younger shinobi 94.
- Great Fireball Technique: Originally belongs to the Uchiha, but becomes part of Konoha’s publicly held ninjutsu collection 60.
- Recognizable association: Hanzo incorrectly treats Akira’s use of Great Fireball as proof of Uchiha membership, relying on outdated information 71.
- Respect for mastery: Akira’s superior Fire Release is a major reason Uchiha soldiers admire him 200.
Genjutsu
The Uchiha are described as possessing Konoha’s strongest genjutsu abilities 146.
- Deceptive combat scenarios: Huohu makes Akira perceive an injured opponent while positioning himself for a killing strike 146.
- Countermeasures: Akira’s Demonic Illusion: Mirror Heaven and Earth Change reflects Huohu’s illusion back at him 146.
- Avoiding the gaze: Root swordsman Earth Spider fights with his eyes closed to avoid Sharingan hypnosis 180.
- Exceptional users: Madara’s Sharingan genjutsu briefly disrupts Akira’s awareness and creates an escape opening during their duel 232.
Exceptional Members’ Powers
- Madara’s Susanoo: Develops into Warrior God Susanoo during his battle with Akira. Using it without the Rinnegan places considerable strain on his eyes 233.
- Obito’s spatial ability: Allows attacks to pass through his body and enables spatial transportation. His continuous intangibility has a five-minute limit, and long-distance movement requires a destination he has visited or seen 281 282.
- Wood Release: Used by Madara and Obito, but not presented as a standard Uchiha clan ability 232 281.
History
Founding Legacy and Political Estrangement
Madara Uchiha founded Konoha alongside Hashirama Senju and formerly headed the clan 211 231. The narration connects the clan’s abandonment of Madara to his defeat by Hashirama, whose strength also earned admiration among Uchiha 213.
Under Hiruzen, the Uchiha retain enough independence to be considered capable of breaking away from Konoha. Their estrangement is attributed to being pushed out by the village leadership, rather than to the self-imposed isolation associated with the Hyuga 12.
Hiruzen regards them with wariness and permits Danzo’s targeting. Nevertheless, he privately understands that the Uchiha consider Konoha their own and want to reclaim authority over it rather than defect 75 203 220.
Kirigakure Front and the False “Uchiha Akira”
The Uchiha watch Kirigakure from the beginning of Hiruzen’s tenure and hold that front during the Second Shinobi World War 93 200. Their continued fighting there strengthens the clan; the narration identifies Madara’s control of Kirigakure as an unrecognized advantage that makes it a favorable training ground 145.
Akira inadvertently worsens the clan’s political position by accepting Hanzo’s mistaken identification and inventing the name “Uchiha Akira.” Hanzo subsequently blames this nonexistent Uchiha for Shōzō’s death, bringing suspicion onto the clan even though no Uchiha are serving on that battlefield 71 75.
Root’s Covert Attacks
Danzo uses Root to eliminate Uchiha talent and acquire Sharingan, limiting the frequency of attacks to avoid alerting the clan 120.
Akira’s Root test mission targets Sōsuke’s squad on its way to the Kirigakure front. He kills the teacher and teammates first, provoking Sōsuke’s Sharingan awakening, then kills Sōsuke himself 93 94.
A later mission orders Akira and Hiruko to kill three Uchiha jonin, retrieve their eyes, and leave evidence implicating Kirigakure. Tenkai, Huohu, and their companion are killed; Hiruko removes three pairs of Sharingan before Akira burns the bodies 144 145 146. Akira subsequently leads Root in destroying another Uchiha squad 180.
Service Under Hyuga Akira
Despite his secret attacks, Akira receives enthusiastic support from the Uchiha assigned to his command. His reinforcement force includes one hundred clan members, and he works with Fugaku, Jin, and Yashiro on the Kirigakure front 200.
Fugaku and Jin initially challenge Akira’s criticism of the daimyo and village system. Fugaku compares his ideas to Madara’s, but Akira’s argument that nobles exploit shinobi begins to unsettle both men’s assumptions 211.
After Akira defeats Kirigakure and kills the Mizukage, Hiruzen orders him to surrender command to Fugaku and return to Konoha. Fugaku and other frontline shinobi instead pledge their support to Akira 218 219. Unknown to them, Akira has also killed severely wounded Uchiha on the battlefield to obtain additional Sharingan 218.
Nine-Tails Attack and Alliance with Akira
During the Nine-Tails attack, Uchiha shinobi fight the beast and the Police Force rescues villagers. Their efforts do not prevent public hostility: witnesses see Sharingan in the Nine-Tails’ eyes and blame the clan 267.
Nawaki publicly states that the attacker is a separate Uchiha remnant and that the clan bears no responsibility. Privately, he still suspects that the masked attacker could be hiding among them 267 268.
Fugaku then visits Akira and offers the clan’s support. When Akira dismisses the Hokage’s seat as too small and raises the title of “Ninja Country Daimyo,” Fugaku promises support regardless of his chosen direction 268.
Akira later approaches Fugaku about changing the shinobi world. Fugaku subsequently appears alongside Sasori during the attack on Iwagakure 291 297.
