First Appearance Chapter 18

Background / History

Kakashi was assigned by the Third Hokage to lead an early-graduation class for exceptional students. Its first and initially only student was Uchiha Yu, whose ability to use the Sharingan and launch six Great Fireballs at age nine convinced Kakashi that the Ninja Academy had little more to teach him. Kakashi offered to teach Yu any non-forbidden jutsu he requested. 18

He trained Yu in Water Release by allowing him to experiment beneath a waterfall and stepping in with guidance when necessary. Kakashi regarded Yu’s progress as faster than expected. 23 As Yu’s requests increasingly focused on techniques that could counter the Uchiha Clan, Kakashi became concerned by both his student’s motives and the worsening relationship between Konoha and the Uchiha. 19 152

Kakashi later became the leader of a three-person team comprising Uchiha Yu, Neji Hyuga, and Yakumo Kurama. He used a bell test to assess whether they could prioritize one another over individual victory, formally accepting them after they demonstrated mutual support. 130 131

Appearance

Kakashi is a white-haired shinobi who usually keeps his face concealed behind a mask. His single Sharingan is normally covered by his forehead protector. 18 156 217

  • White hair and a habitually tired or yawning demeanor. 18
  • Wears a mask even while eating, using one with an opening for meals. 64
  • Possesses one Three-Tomoe Sharingan. 156
  • Carries kunai, shuriken, and bells for team evaluations. 130 155

Personality

Kakashi is outwardly casual, chronically late, and prone to napping during lessons. He reads Icha Icha Paradise while supervising training and initially appears unreliable enough for Yu to mock him as “Maggot-sensei.” 18 23 He also uses humor and misdirection freely, including relying on Shadow Clones during his team’s first gathering. 130

Behind this indolence, Kakashi is attentive and protective. He gives students room to learn through trial and error, recognizes their strengths, and is reluctant to accept missions that could endanger them. 23 137 In battle, he repeatedly prioritizes comrades over his own safety, including choosing to hold Sasori back alone so his students could escape. 156

Kakashi judges shinobi by their willingness to protect teammates. He came to trust Uchiha Yu because Yu endangered himself to help him against Kakuzu, and later defended Yu before Konoha’s leadership despite village suspicion. 67 117 201

Abilities & Skills

Sharingan

Kakashi’s Sharingan gives him exceptional battle perception and forms the basis of his reputation as the Copy Ninja.

  • Uses its dynamic vision to track and evade attacks, including Sasori’s Iron Sand needles. 156
  • Observes opponents’ movements and attack trajectories to create openings. 155 156
  • Employs Genjutsu to unsettle enemies, making them believe he has copied their hand seals before defeating them with their own techniques. 64
  • Can use Kamui to send targets into the Kamui Dimension. 595
  • Is not especially confident in Genjutsu despite his ocular abilities, calling it a weakness compared with his other skills. 64

Copied Ninjutsu

Kakashi claims to have copied more than a thousand jutsu and offers to teach any of them that are not forbidden techniques. 18

  • Water Release — uses Water Release: Wild Water Wave and Water Release: Water Wall in combat. 130
  • Earth Release — creates Earth Walls for defense and uses Earth Release: Inner Decapitation Technique during the bell test. 130 155
  • Shadow Clone Jutsu — uses clones for deception and to manage team tests from concealment. 130
  • Lightning Clone — used while fighting the Sound Five. 39
  • Body Replacement and Body Flicker — employs both to evade lethal attacks and rapidly reposition. 38 39

Chidori

Kakashi’s signature Lightning Release concentrates high-intensity chakra electricity in his hand for high-speed piercing attacks.

  • Pierced Jirobo with Chidori while breaking through the Sound Five. 39
  • Used Chidori to destroy an enemy Haze Clone technique and the underground trap supporting it. 155
  • Relied on Chidori to block Sasori’s poisoned tail hook, though the contact still poisoned him. 156
  • Used an advanced Chidori variant to evade Yu’s Lightning Feather during the bell test. 130

Tactical Command

Kakashi adapts quickly to unfamiliar opponents and gives clear formations under pressure.

  • Identified Uchiha Yu’s fire-based distress signal during Orochimaru’s pursuit and fought through the Sound Five to reach him. 38 39
  • Coordinated plans with Yu against Kakuzu after learning that Kakuzu possessed five hearts and multiple chakra natures. 68
  • Ordered Team Kakashi into a defensive formation after Yu detected an enemy hiding in a puddle. 155
  • Recognized the danger posed by Sasori’s poison and altered his attack plan rather than committing to a close-range Chidori assault. 156

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Icha Icha Paradise — a novel he reads while monitoring training. 23
  • Kunai and shuriken — standard tools used for offense, feints, and counterattacks. 18 155
  • Team bells — used to test whether prospective students value teamwork. 130 131
  • Ninken support — travels with the ninja dog Pakku during tracking missions. 155

Relationships

  • Uchiha Yu — Student. Kakashi trains Yu in Water Release, Shadow Clones, and later agrees to teach him Chidori; he repeatedly expresses pride in Yu and vouches for his character before the Konoha council. 23 67 152 201 249
  • Neji Hyuga — Student and Team Kakashi member. Kakashi tests Neji’s rapidly developing Gentle Fist techniques during the bell test. 130 131
  • Yakumo Kurama — Student and Team Kakashi member. Kakashi counters her Genjutsu during the bell test and accepts her into the team after she supports her teammates. 130 131
  • Might Guy — Fellow Konoha jōnin and battlefield ally. Guy calls Yu Kakashi’s top student and arrives to rescue Yu during the fight with Kakuzu. 115 249
  • Minato Namikaze — Former teacher. Kakashi recalls Minato’s mastery of Flying Thunder God Technique and his decisive wartime achievements. 249
  • Obito Uchiha — Former teammate whose identity and actions deeply shock Kakashi when Yu exposes him. 130 238
  • Rin Nohara — Former teammate. Her appearance in Yu’s Genjutsu visibly disrupts Kakashi during the bell test. 130
  • Sasori of the Red Sand — Enemy who poisons Kakashi during their confrontation; Sasori holds Kakashi responsible by association for the death of his parents at the hands of Sakumo Hatake. 156
  • Kakuzu — Akatsuki opponent. Kakashi battles him alongside Yu and intervenes when Kakuzu attempts to take Yu’s heart. 67 68
