Background / History

Academy Graduation and Team 7

After failing the Academy examination, Naruto steals the Scroll of Seals because Mizuki tells him that learning its ninjutsu will allow him to pass. Goten intercepts Mizuki’s attack and defeats him, then falsely credits Naruto with the victory. Hiruzen, who witnessed the incident through his crystal ball, knowingly accepts the story 3 4.

Naruto graduates and joins Team 7 alongside Sakura Haruno, Sasuke Uchiha, and the specially assigned fourth member, Son Goten. During Kakashi’s bell exercise, Goten gives Naruto a captured bell; Naruto then offers it to Sasuke rather than let him be expelled. Kakashi passes the entire team after witnessing their concern for one another 5 6 11.

Early Missions and the Land of Waves

Naruto quickly becomes dissatisfied with routine work such as babysitting and weeding. On Tazuna’s escort mission, however, he insists that the team should help after hearing that abandoning the bridge builder could leave his family bereaved 12 16.

Goten saves Naruto from Zabuza’s sword, and Naruto subsequently coordinates shadow clones with Sasuke’s shuriken attack while Kakashi is trapped in the Water Prison Technique. Later, Naruto and Sasuke are caught inside Haku’s Demonic Mirroring Ice Crystals until Goten breaks through the mirrors 16 17 23.

Chūnin Exams

Naruto refuses to withdraw from the written examination despite the threat of remaining a genin forever. His declaration steadies other wavering candidates, and Ibiki passes everyone who stayed. Team 7 then completes the Forest of Death stage and advances to the preliminary matches 32 45.

Before the finals, Naruto resents Kakashi’s decision to train Sasuke separately and initially receives Ebisu as a tutor. Jiraiya subsequently takes charge of his special training. Naruto successfully summons Gamabunta and goes on to defeat Neji in the official selection match 55 56 59 66 69.

Tsunade Search and Rasengan

In Tanzaku Town, Naruto angrily challenges Tsunade after she mocks the Hokage title. She wagers the First Hokage’s chakra crystal necklace that he cannot learn the Rasengan within seven days 90.

Naruto continues the water-balloon exercise until chakra backlash tears open his hands. Kabuto exploits his frustration, questioning whether he can ever catch Sasuke and attempting to sever his wrist tendons. Goten stops the attack and restores Naruto’s determination. In their later confrontation, Naruto successfully strikes Kabuto with the Rasengan, knocking him through three ruined walls 94 98.

Sasuke’s Departure and Extended Training

Sasuke’s resentment intensifies after learning of Naruto’s victory over Kabuto. Their hospital-rooftop confrontation escalates into Chidori against Rasengan before Kakashi intervenes; the damage Naruto leaves in a water tank further unsettles Sasuke. After Sasuke leaves Konoha, Naruto joins Shikamaru’s pursuit squad 104 107 112.

Naruto later leaves with Jiraiya for three years, determined to surpass Goten and bring Sasuke home. On returning, he challenges Goten at Ichiraku and is defeated by a single finger-generated shock wave. Goten’s criticism of his control and physical weaknesses leads into two years of intensive training under him 123 125 126 127.

Akatsuki Missions and Reorganized Team 7

Naruto joins the reinforcements sent after Gaara’s abduction and attacks Deidara in anger. Although his ki training has strengthened him, Deidara’s explosive clay exposes his lack of combat experience 130 137.

When Team 7 is reorganized, Naruto remains a member alongside Sakura and the newly assigned Sai, with Yamato as captain. Their initial coordination is poor, but improves during a joint exercise against Goten 150 151.

During the Tenchi Bridge mission, Naruto’s fight with Orochimaru escalates into an uncontrolled four-tailed transformation. At their subsequent reunion, Sasuke uses the Sharingan to suppress the Nine-Tails and incapacitate Naruto. Goten intercepts Sasuke’s sword before it can strike Naruto’s back 157 158 162.

Remaining in Konoha

As Akatsuki’s threat grows, Jiraiya asks Goten to remain in Konoha to protect Naruto, a likely target because of the Nine-Tails. Goten also begins helping Naruto approach the fox’s power through ki 177 178.

At the end of the Naruto arc, Naruto returns from a mission with Anko and Tenten as the rift above Konoha closes. He tries to follow Goten, but the two women kick him back and tell him the village needs him. After they enter the rift, Naruto remains among the ruins, where Teuchi approaches him carrying Tsunade’s folded ceremonial robe and offers him ramen 215.

Personality

Naruto is loud, mischievous, and eager for acknowledgment. He celebrates landing a chalkboard-eraser prank on Kakashi and repeatedly announces his ambition to become Hokage. His determination is especially clear during the written Chūnin Exam, when he refuses to abandon that ambition even if he must remain a genin forever 5 7 32.

His loyalty can outweigh his own advancement. He offers Sasuke his bell during Kakashi’s test, knowing that doing so could send him back to the Academy, and continues pursuing Sasuke after his departure 11 123 163.

Confidence and insecurity coexist in him. Kabuto briefly shakes his resolve by comparing him unfavorably with Sasuke, while Goten’s effortless victory after his three-year training trip leaves him despondent. Nevertheless, he resumes training after both setbacks and endures Goten’s punishing routine for two years 94 126 127.

His greater composure does not eliminate impulsiveness. He rushes Deidara in anger over Gaara’s abduction and still struggles to translate increased strength into sound battlefield judgment 127 137.

Shadow Clone Techniques

Naruto creates numerous physical duplicates for attacks, distractions, and technique assistance 8 69 98.
