The deaths of her younger brother Nawaki and her lover Dan leave her with lasting grief and a debilitating fear of blood. Although she initially derides the Hokage position, she remains attached to Konoha as the village both men protected. Orochimaru exploits these losses by offering to resurrect them in exchange for treatment 90 93 95 96.

Tsunade initially dismisses Naruto’s ambition to become Hokage and wagers her necklace against his ability to learn the Rasengan within seven days. During a casino visit, Goten’s extraordinary senses guide her bets to repeated wins, briefly overturning her reputation as the “Fat Sheep” 90 92.

Orochimaru’s Bargain

Orochimaru offers to resurrect Dan and Nawaki if Tsunade heals his arms. She struggles with the temptation but ultimately feigns agreement to get close enough to attack him. Kabuto then exploits her fear of blood, forcing Goten to intervene 93 95 96 97.

Investigation of the Stone Gates

Tsunade gives Goten access to secret records about an ancient sealed area beneath Konoha. Further scrolls depict the stone gate and a figure Goten recognizes as Trunks, prompting her to assign an investigation east of the Land of Lightning 146 167.

After Trunks arrives, she compares his account of the underwater gate with Konoha’s records. The destruction of Root’s hideout supplies further evidence: Danzo and Orochimaru had exchanged intelligence for at least twelve years, and a secret survey beneath Ichiraku had encountered a barrier capable of erasing memories 175 192 197.

As pressure increases between the connected gates, Tsunade coordinates the village’s response and confronts interference from Homura and Koharu. Their later attempt to demand the crystal and remove her from office is stopped by Goten 197 202 204 209.

Departure Through the Rift

The underground eruption destroys part of Hokage Rock and the seal left by Hashirama. When Goten decides to draw the returning Crimson One-Eyed Being into a spatial rift, Tsunade pleads with him to stay 210 213.

She initially remains behind because of her responsibilities as Hokage, even as the others follow him. With the rift closing, she appoints Jiraiya Acting Hokage, discards her ceremonial robe, and launches herself into the opening. Shizune follows shortly afterward 214 215.
