Background / History

Wartime Childhood

Nagato met Pero while the latter was wandering after arriving in the Naruto world. During their childhood, the two collapsed from hunger beside a road. Konan found them and, moved by Nagato’s determination to live, brought them to the shelter she shared with Yahiko. The four depended on one another while listening to Yahiko’s dream of world peace 1.

Nagato later studied under Jiraiya. Yahiko overheard that Nagato might be the prophesied Child of Destiny and came to value his life above his own, believing that his Rinnegan could help bring peace to the world 2 25.

Hanzō’s Trap and Black Zetsu’s Possession

Despite Pero’s warnings, Yahiko and Nagato approached Hanzō about an alliance. Hanzō took Konan hostage and ordered Nagato to kill Yahiko in exchange for their freedom. Nagato hesitated over the kunai until Pero arrived and stopped him, saving both Yahiko and Konan 1 2.

Afterward, Pero revealed that Yahiko had intended to die by Nagato’s hand. Yahiko’s confirmation overwhelmed Nagato with grief, anger, and memories of war. Black Zetsu exploited the moment to possess him and summon the Demonic Statue of the Outer Path. Pero destroyed the statue and tore Black Zetsu from Nagato, who regained consciousness with his right Rinnegan missing 2 3.

Although Yahiko survived, Nagato abandoned the belief that peace could be achieved without overwhelming force. He proposed seizing the tailed beasts and suppressing the shinobi villages under Akatsuki rule 3 4.

Appearance

  • Hair: Red; later worn long enough to cover one eye 1 33.
  • Eyes: Purple Rinnegan marked by concentric rings. He loses the right eye after Black Zetsu’s possession and the left to Madara; replacement eyes are present by the postwar period 3 33 38 46.
  • Clothing: Akatsuki’s black cloak patterned with red clouds 24 30.
  • Empowered state: Golden chakra flames surround his body when he draws on Pero’s power 34 38.

Personality

Nagato’s commitment to peace survives his rejection of Yahiko’s original methods. He concludes that leaders who have never experienced pain will not relinquish power willingly, and that only a force capable of destroying a nation can establish lasting peace. Even at his most radical, he states that innocent people at the bottom of society should not become casualties of war 3 4.

As an operational leader, he is stern and pragmatic. He excludes Yahiko from a dangerous mission because of his limited skills and elemental disadvantage, allows members opposed to Akatsuki’s new direction to leave, and prioritizes consolidating control over Amegakure 11. When an empowered Yahiko becomes arrogant, Nagato defeats him and directly criticizes his failure to improve his technique or judgment 25.

His ruthlessness coexists with strong personal attachments. He kills a Sand patrolman after reading his memories and gives Roshi a choice between joining Akatsuki and death, yet condemns Madara’s slaughter of fellow Konoha shinobi 10 13 38. His sealing studies are also driven by the prospect of Pero leaving: he wants to master enough power to stop relying on his friend 22.

Abilities & Skills

Rinnegan: Gravitational Techniques

Nagato uses attraction and repulsion for defense, restraint, and direct attacks 10 25 34.

  • Shinra Tensei: Repels Rasa’s attack, throws Yagura into a cliff, and destroys incoming Earth Dragon Bullets during the allied assault 10 24 33.
  • Banshō Ten’in: Pulls opponents toward him, including Hán and Killer B simultaneously 25 35.
  • Combined attraction and repulsion: Subjects Yahiko to opposing forces and launches him through a training-ground wall 25.
  • Chibaku Tensei / Planetary Devastation: Creates a gravitational core that gathers surrounding matter into a sealing sphere 10 13.
  • Flight: Pursues Roshi through the air while attacking from above 13.
  • Early limitation: His chakra reserves cannot sustain repeated high-cost techniques. Against Rasa, a lock of his hair turns white; after fighting Roshi, he cannot immediately seal the extracted Four-Tails 10 13.

Rinnegan: Information Gathering and Control

His ocular powers support infiltration and the suppression of jinchūriki 10 13 35.

  • Mind Layer Dive: Searches a Sand ninja’s memories for Sunagakure’s defenses and the new One-Tail jinchūriki’s location 10.
  • Jinchūriki suppression: Restrains Roshi, though a surge of Four-Tails chakra and a painful lava burn disrupt his control 13.
  • Ocular control: Immobilizes Hán and Killer B, whose eyes take on the appearance of Rinnegan before extraction 35.
  • Chakra recognition: Detects a familiar chakra signature on Obito after learning that both of them were targeted as pawns 8.

Black Rods and Corpse Control

Nagato uses black rods both as weapons and to control Hanzō’s corpse 11 13.

  • Fires rods from the air to cut off Roshi’s escape routes 13.
  • Pins Roshi with five rods, shattering his spine and draining away his recovering chakra 13.
  • Operates Hanzō’s reconstructed body, allowing Akatsuki to govern while Hanzō remains the village’s nominal leader 11 25.
  • Pero considers turning Nagato’s Six Paths of Pain into additional Pero Jinchūriki, but this remains a proposal in the provided account 23.

Sealing Techniques

Nagato supplements his Rinnegan techniques with knowledge recovered from his clan’s homeland 13 16 22.

  • Tailed Beast Release Seal: Forcibly separates the Four-Tails from Roshi 13.
  • Sealing urns: Stores extracted tailed beasts and arranges eight urns in a formation with one remaining gap 35.
  • Host preservation: Removes the Five-Tails and Eight-Tails while leaving Hán and Killer B alive 35.
  • Adamantine Sealing Chains: Produces dazzling golden chains to bind the Ten-Tails temporarily; the attempt does not establish a lasting restraint 40.
  • Learning curve: Before receiving the Uzumaki scrolls, he lacks his clan’s sealing knowledge and relies on Rinnegan-based methods 13 22.

Pero Jinchūriki Enhancement

A chakra clone sealed inside Nagato grants him Kryptonian-like power without making him equivalent to Pero himself 23 27.

  • Enhanced strength and speed: Overwhelms Kumogakure’s defenses and cracks the ribs of Madara’s Perfect Susanoo with a punch 30 38.
  • Golden power state: Releases a pillar of golden light when entering his strongest state 34.
  • Combined physical attack: Joins Yahiko and Konan in dispersing the Allied Shinobi Forces’ massive combined chakra attack with their fists 34.
  • Defensive limitation: Pero identifies that the clone-created “Kryptonians” lack his bio-electric field and his resistance to purely physical attacks 25.
  • Experience limitation: The enhancement does not compensate for Madara’s superior battle instincts; Madara grievously wounds Nagato and the other four Akatsuki fighters 38.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Uzumaki secret-technique scrolls — Recovered by Pero from a hidden chamber beneath the Land of Whirlpools and studied by Nagato 16 22.
  • Black rods — Used for piercing attacks, chakra disruption, restraint, and corpse control 11 13.
  • Sealing urns — Containers used to hold the captured tailed beasts before Madara’s arrival 35.
  • Hanzō’s reconstructed corpse — Fitted with rods and fastenings; serves as Nagato’s controlled proxy in Amegakure 11 25.

Relationships

  • Pero — Childhood companion, rescuer, and principal source of Akatsuki’s overwhelming power. Nagato calls him the “foundation of peace,” but studies sealing techniques to become less dependent on him 1 2 22 27.
  • Yahiko — Childhood companion and Akatsuki’s founder. Yahiko’s willingness to sacrifice himself precipitates Nagato’s ideological transformation; Nagato later acts as a stern critic of his combat weaknesses 2 3 11 25.
  • Konan — Childhood rescuer and fellow operational leader. She handles intelligence and administration, protects him during tailed-beast extraction, and fights beside him against the alliance 1 11 25 35.
  • Jiraiya — Teacher who connected Nagato’s Rinnegan with the prophecy of a savior 2 25.
  • Kakuzu — Mission partner during the One-Tail and Four-Tails operations. Their exchanges include mutual criticism, while Kakuzu protects him during the Four-Tails’ extraction 10 13.
  • Madara Uchiha — Original owner of his Rinnegan and architect of a plan to use him for resurrection. Madara later defeats Nagato and takes his remaining eye 4 38.
  • Black Zetsu — Manipulator who possesses Nagato and treats him as a useful pawn. He later uses Nagato’s stolen Rinnegan in another Uzumaki’s body to resurrect Madara 3 38.

Story Role / Major Arcs

Consolidating Akatsuki and Capturing Tailed Beasts

Nagato becomes a leading organizer of Akatsuki’s campaign to take the tailed beasts. At Pero’s direction, the missions also serve as practical combat experience, addressing Nagato’s inability to handle every major opponent without assistance 8.

Operation Nagato’s contribution Outcome
One-Tail retrieval Reads a patrolman’s memories, directs the infiltration, and traps Rasa with Chibaku Tensei. Yahiko and Kakuzu retrieve the newborn jinchūriki; Pero kills Rasa after Nagato exhausts his chakra 10.
Amegakure consolidation Orders action against Hanzō’s remaining forces and controls Hanzō’s corpse. Akatsuki integrates the village while preserving Hanzō as its official leader 11 13 25.
Four-Tails extraction Pursues Roshi, disables him with black rods, and extracts Son Goku. Unable to complete the sealing through chakra exhaustion, he calls Pero, who absorbs the beast 13.
Six-Tails capture Leads Yahiko and Rin, repels Yagura, and takes Utakata. The capture succeeds; Yagura resolves to unite the major villages against Akatsuki 24.
Kumogakure attack Uses his new enhancement to overwhelm defenses and capture Yugito Nii. The devastated village’s Raikage commits to the alliance against Akatsuki, fulfilling Pero’s assignment 27 30.

Battle Against the Allied Shinobi Forces

Nagato, Konan, and Yahiko confront the army outside Amegakure. Nagato neutralizes incoming ninjutsu with Shinra Tensei and helps withstand the coordinated attacks of the Kage and jinchūriki. When the army launches a stronger combined technique, the trio activates its full golden power and disperses it with a joint physical strike 33 34.

He then captures Hán and Killer B, extracts their tailed beasts, and completes an eight-urn arrangement. Black Zetsu subsequently approaches beneath the lake and begins undoing the seals while Madara occupies the Akatsuki fighters 35 38.

Madara, the Ten-Tails, and Infinite Tsukuyomi

Nagato initially cracks Madara’s Perfect Susanoo, but the five Akatsuki fighters lose to Madara’s superior experience. Madara severely wounds him and removes his remaining Rinnegan. Black Zetsu implants it into a captive Uzumaki woman and uses her to perform Rinne Rebirth 38.

Despite losing the eye, Nagato later attempts to restrain the Ten-Tails with enhanced Adamantine Sealing Chains. When Pero’s safeguard clone appears, he recognizes it and relaxes after the prolonged fighting 40.

After Madara activates Infinite Tsukuyomi, Minato transports the Akatsuki and Kakashi to Amegakure. Nagato joins Yahiko, Konan, and Rin in raising a barrier against the moonlight 43.

Postwar

Months after Kaguya’s defeat, the Five Great Shinobi Villages submit to Pero and Akatsuki, establishing the peace Nagato had pursued. He remains in Amegakure and is seen meditating with restored eyes before Pero leaves the world through the Ryūmyaku 46.
