Background
Dr. Jonah Vogelbaum created Homelander from Soldier Boy’s genetic sample after Vought sought a successor who would be stronger and easier to control. Born in a test tube with superpowers already present, John grew up without knowing his biological father’s identity 65.
Vogelbaum raised him in a cold laboratory and subjected him to cruel experiments intended to test his limits. Homelander remembered him as another father figure but felt no affection for the man responsible for his childhood suffering 50 63.
As an adult, Homelander became Vought’s premier superhero and the figurehead of The Seven. His identity depended on being the strongest being on Earth, while the company managed his public image and staged his heroic appearances. He eventually recognized that Vought had treated him first as an experiment and then as an expensive product 50 56 58.
Appearance
Homelander is a tall, handsome man with blond hair, blue eyes, and a chiseled face 49 53 72.
- Original costume: A Vought-made, star-spangled suit with a cape, associated with his American superhero image 49 50 53.
- Heat Vision: His eyes glow scarlet before firing red energy beams 49.
- Later costume: A simple white suit with gold trim, worn during his Justice League career 72.
Personality
Homelander initially combines extreme conceit with a desperate need for affection. He bases his self-worth on his overwhelming strength and public adoration, reacting to perceived threats with suspicion and violence. When Pero effortlessly blocks his attacks, he immediately fears that Vought has manufactured a replacement to kill him 49 50.
His cruelty extends beyond opponents. He raped Becca, threatened frightened airline passengers, abandoned their doomed aircraft, and violently punished colleagues who displeased him. Even after becoming attached to Pero, he still murders Vought agents and punches A-Train into an alloy wall over an insult 49 53 55 57.
His relationship with Pero exposes an intensely childlike dependence. Interpreting a brutal beating as paternal discipline, he becomes convinced that Pero is his father and begins seeking his approval through gifts, rehearsed reunions, and reports of heroic deeds. That attachment eventually becomes more important to him than approval ratings, weakening Vought’s control over him 50 51 52 56 58.
His later development centers on accepting personal choice rather than another authority’s approval. He rejects Soldier Boy’s demand to betray Pero, and after Pero’s departure begins acting with a calm sense of responsibility rather than a need for applause 68 72.
Abilities & Skills
Superhuman Strength
Homelander possesses immense physical strength, sufficient to damage reinforced structures and overpower other powerful Supes 53 57 62.
- Smashes a special-alloy elevator wall and tears its doors apart 53.
- Punches A-Train into a thick alloy wall 57.
- Gains the upper hand over Soldier Boy in close combat and later breaks all four of his limbs 62 68.
- Cannot overcome Pero’s grip; his punches fail to move Pero even when delivered directly to his face 49 50.
Flight and Speed
Homelander can hover, accelerate rapidly through the air, and transport others while flying 49 56 63.
- Charges at Pero with an air-rending sonic boom 49.
- Carries Maeve to Pero’s villa and Soldier Boy to Vogelbaum’s home 56 63 65.
- Uses flight and enhanced senses to search the continent for Pero 53.
- Cannot keep track of Pero once the latter stops restraining his speed 51.
Heat Vision
His eyes emit scarlet beams powerful enough to melt steel 49.
- Cuts Vought agents in half and destroys another agent’s head 55.
- Burns Soldier Boy’s hands during their first fight 62.
- Causes no visible damage to Pero, whether fired into his palm or directly at his face 49 50.
Enhanced Senses and Processing
Homelander possesses Super-Vision, X-ray vision, Super-Hearing, and a Compound V-enhanced brain described as comparable to a supercomputer 49 51 54.
- Searches urban areas through clouds and listens across a city, though the accumulated noise causes discomfort 51.
- Detects Vought surveillance agents several hundred meters away 55.
- Uses an agent’s racing heartbeat as evidence that he is lying 55.
- His X-ray vision can be blocked by lead and by the invisible barrier surrounding Pero’s villa 54.
- Cannot properly perceive Pero after the latter’s Silver Superman evolution; the visible body registers as an empty, engulfing void to his extraordinary senses 71.
Durability and Recovery
Compound V gives Homelander exceptional resistance to injury and rapid recovery 50.
- Survives repeated crater-forming impacts, severe burns from Pero’s golden Heat Vision, and extensive facial injuries 49 50.
- Begins healing during the beating itself, although subsequent blows reopen or worsen his injuries 50.
- Remains vulnerable to sufficiently powerful Supes: Butcher’s enhanced eye beams knock him away, allowing Soldier Boy to restrain him 62.
- Is weakened by B.C.L. Red nerve gas during the attack on Pero’s villa 67 68.
Relationships
- Pero — A self-appointed father figure and eventual source of guidance. Homelander treats him as his father despite learning that Pero is only sixteen and describes them as counterparts from parallel timelines 50 55 68.
- Soldier Boy — His biological father. Their reunion brings hostility rather than acceptance; Soldier Boy ultimately demands that Homelander help kill Pero, leading Homelander to reject and cripple him 65 68.
- Ryan — His son with Becca. Homelander initially frightens Ryan, later neglects him while obsessing over Pero, and then dreams of bringing the family together across three generations 49 51 56.
- Becca — Ryan’s mother, whom Homelander raped. She dies after Ryan accidentally strikes her with Heat Vision while attacking Storm 48 49.
- Dr. Jonah Vogelbaum — His creator and childhood caretaker. Homelander resents his experiments but seeks him out to establish the truth about Soldier Boy 50 63 65.
- Stan Edgar — Vought’s chief executive and manipulator. Edgar exploits Homelander’s desire for family, reveals his parentage, and later orders his elimination 59 67.
- Billy Butcher — An enemy who protects Ryan after Becca’s death. Butcher conspires with Soldier Boy to kill Homelander and Pero 49 67.
- Starlight — Initially a target of his hostility and an unwelcome co-captain; later his fellow founder of the Justice League 53 57 72.
- Queen Maeve — A teammate who tries to restrain him through blackmail, then successfully negotiates using information about Pero 53 55 56.
- Storm — His girlfriend when Pero arrives in the world. His attention shifts away from her after his encounter with Pero 47 49 58.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Defeat and Fixation on Pero
Following Becca’s death, Homelander orders Ryan to come with him, but the frightened boy hides behind Butcher. Noticing Pero nearby, Homelander attacks without waiting for an explanation. Neither Heat Vision nor physical force harms the stranger, who retaliates by repeatedly smashing him into the ground 49.
Homelander offers money, power, and membership in The Seven before attempting further sneak attacks. Pero responds with another beating, but Homelander begins interpreting the punishment as the paternal affection he never received. Alarmed by his happy expression, Pero flees, and Homelander follows 50.
Seeking a Father
Convinced that their similar powers establish a family connection, Homelander commissions a luxurious home and stages rehearsals for a televised father-son reunion. He discovers Pero’s name through a newly registered identity, but subsequently spends a week searching for him while Pero remains in orbit 51 52 53.
His obsession renders Maeve’s threat to expose the abandoned passenger plane ineffective: he declares that public opinion no longer matters. Once Pero returns, Homelander calls him “Dad” and persists even after hearing the explanation about parallel counterparts. He dismisses their age difference with the claim that the stronger person gets to be the father 53 54 55.
He then settles into a routine of reporting company-arranged heroics to Pero and eagerly accepting perfunctory praise. Remembering Ryan, he begins planning a reunion that would give Pero a superpowered grandson 56 57.
Discovering His Origins
Edgar attempts to redirect Homelander by revealing that Soldier Boy is his biological father. After examining Vought’s records, Homelander asks Pero to accompany him to Russia, where they follow the newly freed Soldier Boy to the Boys’ safe house 59 60 61.
Soldier Boy’s insults provoke a fight. Homelander initially dominates, but Butcher intervenes and Soldier Boy prepares another energy attack before Pero separates them. Seeking firmer evidence than a paternity report, Homelander takes Soldier Boy to Vogelbaum, who confirms the genetic experiment. Homelander celebrates the discovery as having “two dads” 62 63 65.
Choosing Pero
Butcher recruits Soldier Boy into Edgar’s assassination scheme. At Pero’s villa, Soldier Boy demands that Homelander join him in killing Pero, offering him a place as his heir 67 68.
Homelander refuses, recognizing that he wants a home rather than another master. Butcher releases nerve gas that weakens both father and son, but Pero destroys the canister, kills Butcher, and leaves Soldier Boy for Homelander to confront. Homelander breaks all four of Soldier Boy’s limbs and survives the exhausting battle 68 69.
Afterward, he brings the wheelchair-bound Soldier Boy and Ryan to Pero’s villa. He also witnesses Pero create an energy duplicate and return with a profoundly changed presence after evolving into Silver Superman 70 71.
Justice League
Homelander struggles with renewed fear of abandonment when Pero prepares to leave, asking him to stay longer. Pero nevertheless departs, leaving Homelander and the others to shape their world’s future 72.
Months later, Homelander and Starlight have founded the Justice League. While watching the construction of Pero’s statue on Vought Tower’s former site, Homelander reflects that he no longer needs public cheers to give his life direction. He immediately answers a police request for help, while a news report credits the League with saving every passenger aboard a hijacked plane aimed at the Twin Towers 72.
Notable Quotes
“The stronger one gets to be the father. I don't mind.” 55
“Every identity I've had, all my powers, all my heroic deeds—the company arranged every last detail.” 58
“I have two dads!!!” 65
Trivia
- Milk is his favorite drink; preparing it becomes part of his domestic routine at Pero’s villa 56.
- Before their meeting, Pero uses “Homelander” as a possible comparison for people empowered by weakened Kryptonian-like cores. This does not make Homelander a member of the Superman Squad 23.
- Much later, Pero privately judges Homelander better able to withstand a beating than Kaido 105.
