Background / History

Training on Mount Momoyama

Zenitsu was already Jigoro Kuwajima’s disciple when Uesugi Sasuke sought instruction. He watched from behind a peach tree as Kuwajima initially rejected Sasuke, then became Sasuke’s senior fellow disciple after the latter was accepted 13 15.

Kuwajima subjected both boys to running, conditioning, and repeated sword drills. Zenitsu struggled with the workload and repeatedly threatened to leave, but displayed an intuitive command of swordsmanship that Sasuke initially lacked. His unconscious use of Thunderclap and Flash challenged Sasuke’s confidence in his own talent 15 16 17.

Zenitsu became particularly frightened of Sasuke after seeing his Sharingan and witnessing Chidori reduce a boulder to powder. Nevertheless, during a spar, his unconscious fighting instincts nearly caught Sasuke off guard and left a shallow scratch on his cheek 21 22 23 25.

Before Final Selection, Kuwajima gave each disciple a lightning-patterned iron tsuba and urged them to survive. Zenitsu begged to remain behind but ultimately hurried after Sasuke. He subsequently passed the selection 30 53.

Early Missions and Mount Natagumo

At the shifting mansion, Tanjiro found Zenitsu battered after he had been thrown outside. Recognizing Sasuke nearby, Zenitsu assumed that an enemy requiring such a powerful swordsman must be waiting inside. He later accompanied Tanjiro and Hui through the mansion and helped search for Hui’s sister 53 55.

At the Wisteria House, Zenitsu confessed his fear of future missions. Tanjiro acknowledged his own fear and encouraged him to grow stronger to protect the people important to him 59.

On Mount Natagumo, the Big Brother Spider Demon poisoned Zenitsu with venom intended to transform him into a spider. Overwhelmed by terror, Zenitsu fell asleep and killed the demon with Sixfold Strike. Killing his opponent did not stop the poison, and he collapsed after awakening 68.

Rehabilitation and the Mugen Train

During rehabilitation, Sasuke investigated Zenitsu’s crying and instead discovered his unconscious mastery of Total Concentration: Constant. He also recognized Zenitsu’s rare natural affinity for lightning and understood that fear, rather than a lack of talent, restricted him 98.

Zenitsu joined Kyojuro, Tanjiro, Inosuke, and Sasuke aboard the Mugen Train to investigate disappearances. During the battle against Enmu’s flesh, he defended an area of the carriages while still asleep, sustaining injuries as the fighting exhausted the group 104 113.

Entertainment District

Zenitsu joined Tanjiro and Inosuke in opposing Tengen Uzui’s attempt to forcibly recruit girls from the Butterfly Mansion. Tengen easily subdued him before Sasuke intervened. Zenitsu later accompanied the mission to Yoshiwara, where Tengen applied makeup to the three boys for infiltration 132 133 136.

Against Daki, Zenitsu and Inosuke worked together to prevent her from reaching Gyutaro. Zenitsu severed her Obi while Inosuke maintained pressure at close range, and Sixfold Strike tore through her Eightfold Obi Slash. When Tanjiro beheaded Daki, Zenitsu struck again to ensure her neck was cut through 159 162.

Confrontation with Kaigaku

Before the final battle, Zenitsu remained terrified enough to write something resembling a last will. Kyojuro encouraged him, affirming that his Thunder Breathing could tear through darkness 245.

In the Infinity Castle, Zenitsu confronted Kaigaku, his former senior disciple and the new Upper Rank Six. Kaigaku’s transformation into a demon had led Kuwajima to commit seppuku, and his insults toward their master fueled Zenitsu’s grief and anger 250 251.

Kyojuro blocked Kaigaku’s attacks and created an opening for Zenitsu’s self-created Seventh Form, Fire Thunder God. Zenitsu decapitated Kaigaku, bringing their school’s disgrace to an end. Sasuke arranged immediate treatment for the exhausted swordsman 250 251.

Final Battle and Recovery

When Muzan’s Bone Whip threatened Kanao, Zenitsu initially wanted to flee. Remembering the people who had protected and encouraged him, he instead consciously unleashed Fire Thunder God. He carried Kanao to safety, severed the whips, and stood between her and Muzan despite his injuries 280.

Zenitsu later contributed his remaining strength to the combined attack against Muzan. When Tanjiro subsequently transformed into a demon, he could not bring himself to attack his friend 290 292 293.

During the effort to save Tanjiro, Zenitsu caught Kanao and recovered the falling medicine with an awake use of Godspeed. He then clung to Tanjiro and pleaded for his return; the companions’ voices reached Tanjiro’s soul as light within his mental world. Zenitsu eventually collapsed from exhaustion and later awoke, heavily bandaged, at the Butterfly Mansion 298 302 305 308.

Appearance

  • Blond hair: Identified as a blond boy from his earliest appearance 13.
  • Sleeping combat expression: His eyes remain closed and his face becomes calm and expressionless, contrasting with his usual visible distress 25 68.
  • Lightning manifestations: His stronger techniques surround him with golden lightning; Fire Thunder God takes the form of a golden lightning dragon 68 250 280.

Personality

Zenitsu is intensely fearful, frequently cries, and expects missions or training to kill him. During his apprenticeship, he expresses a desire to marry a cute girl and live an ordinary life rather than endure Kuwajima’s exercises. His fear extends beyond demons: thunder and even a butterfly can cause him to lose consciousness 16 17 238.

His low opinion of himself contrasts sharply with his ability. On Mount Natagumo, he considers himself the only ordinary person among his exceptionally strong companions, while Sasuke later recognizes a remarkable talent suppressed by fear 68 98.

Zenitsu’s courage develops through attachment rather than the disappearance of fear. Against Muzan, he remains tearful and frightened but decides that watching his companions die would be worse than death. His later actions show him consciously using the strength he once accessed mainly through sleep 280 290 298.

Abilities & Skills

Instinctive Swordsmanship and Sleeping Combat

Zenitsu’s body can execute precise techniques when unconscious, bypassing the fear that disrupts his waking performance 15 17 98.

  • Naturally coordinates power from his feet through his waist, arms, and sword tip 15.
  • Assumes a flawless Thunder Breathing stance after being knocked down in training 25.
  • Can awaken confused about what happened during a fight 68.
  • Eventually fights consciously despite fear, removing sleep as a necessary condition for his strongest demonstrated attacks 280 298.

Thunder Breathing: First Form — Thunderclap and Flash

A quick-draw technique built around explosive acceleration. Zenitsu specializes in this form rather than mastering the other established forms 17 98 250.

  • Sixfold Strike: Chains six bursts of movement, using terrain to redirect his approach before the finishing slash 68.
  • Godspeed: Enables rapid interception of Daki’s Obi and, later, the rescue of Kanao and the falling medicine 158 159 298.
  • His specialization reflects an exceptionally deep instinctive grasp of the First Form’s speed and explosive power 98.

Thunder Breathing: Seventh Form — Fire Thunder God

Zenitsu’s original sword form compresses his strength into a single slash, manifested as a golden lightning dragon 250 251.

  • Decapitates Kaigaku after Kyojuro neutralizes attacks and creates a safe opening 250 251.
  • Can redirect into a rescue maneuver and cut through Muzan’s Bone Whips 280.
  • At its limit, moves quickly enough that even Muzan’s perception briefly lags behind it 280.
  • Places severe strain on Zenitsu; after saving Kanao, his sword arm trembles and he is drenched in blood 280.

Total Concentration: Constant

Zenitsu unconsciously maintains a perfect state of Total Concentration: Constant while asleep, as observed through Sasuke’s Sharingan 98.

  • Demonstrates breathing control far beyond what his waking complaints suggest 98.
  • The observation does not establish continuous mastery while awake 98.

Lightning Affinity and Chakra Training

Sasuke senses that Zenitsu’s natural golden aura resonates with his Lightning Release chakra, although the two powers manifest differently 98.

  • His affinity is described as natural and pure rather than the refined energy of Sasuke’s ninja techniques 98.
  • During introductory chakra-control training, he unconsciously completes the hands-free tree-climbing exercise in a single run 238.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Nichirin Blade — His principal weapon for Thunder Breathing and his battles against demons 158 245 280.
  • Lightning-patterned iron tsuba — Given to him by Kuwajima before departure for Final Selection 30.
  • Wooden training sword — Used for early drills and sparring on Mount Momoyama 15 25.

Relationships

  • Jigoro Kuwajima — Master and grandfather figure. His advice to perfect a single technique sustains Zenitsu in battle; Zenitsu later defeats Kaigaku to honor his memory 68 251.
  • Uesugi Sasuke — Junior fellow disciple and later Thunder Hashira. Zenitsu initially fears him, while Sasuke progresses from dismissing Zenitsu to recognizing his hidden talent and supporting his confrontation with Kaigaku 15 53 98 250 280.
  • Tanjiro Kamado — Close friend and source of reassurance. Tanjiro encourages him to protect what matters, and Zenitsu refuses to abandon him after his demon transformation 59 293 302.
  • Inosuke Hashibira — Frequently bickering companion and effective combat partner. Their coordinated attacks contain Daki, and Inosuke later diverts Demon King Tanjiro’s attack from Zenitsu 104 159 298.
  • Kyojuro Rengoku — Encouraging senior swordsman who protects Zenitsu and creates the opening needed to defeat Kaigaku 245 250 251.
  • Kaigaku — Former senior fellow disciple turned Upper Rank Six. His betrayal and contempt for Kuwajima make their confrontation deeply personal 250 251.
  • Kanao Tsuyuri — Companion whom Zenitsu rescues from both Muzan and Demon King Tanjiro 280 298.
  • Nezuko Kamado — Object of his affection; he calls for her before the final battle and immediately upon awakening in the hospital 245 308.
  • Chuntaro — Sparrow companion who anxiously urges him to fight on Mount Natagumo 68.
