Background

Tanjiro once sold charcoal to help feed his family. After demons killed their household, he and his younger sister Nezuko were the only survivors, with Nezuko transformed into a demon. Tanjiro committed himself to finding a way to restore her humanity 50 303.

He trained under Urokodaki, whose lessons included observing an opponent, controlling his breathing, and finding the “opening thread.” His memories include training to split a boulder and grieving for the dead on Mount Fujikasane 66 303.

His father, Tanjuro, performed a kagura dedicated to the fire god despite his frail health. Tanjuro taught that correct breathing allowed the dance to continue without exhaustion; those memories later became the foundation of Tanjiro’s Hinokami Kagura 71 266.

Personality

Tanjiro is earnest, courteous, and protective. He introduces himself openly to avoid misunderstandings with Sasuke and tries to stop arguments between fellow swordsmen when civilians remain in danger. In battle, protecting someone behind him often takes priority over attacking 43 45 53.

His compassion does not exclude demons. Rui’s abuse of the “older sister” Spider Demon enrages him because he rejects fear and domination as substitutes for family. During the final struggle within his own mind, he recognizes Muzan’s fear and suffering without abandoning his resolve to stop him 70 304.

His attachment to Nezuko can drive him to desperate or reckless actions: he kneels before Sasuke to beg for her life and charges Sanemi after the Wind Hashira wounds her. Nevertheless, his determination extends beyond family; he persists through rehabilitation and continues fighting when his strength is inadequate 50 81 96 266.

Hinokami Kagura / Sun Breathing

Tanjiro adapts his father’s kagura and breathing into swordsmanship. Initially manifested as Hinokami Kagura: Dance, the style later develops into his principal means of harming Muzan 71 265.

Chakra Control

Sasuke’s Shadow Clone introduces Tanjiro and his companions to chakra through a hands-free tree-climbing exercise 238.

Story Role / Major Arcs

Swamp Demon and Early Missions

Tanjiro meets Sasuke while investigating disappearances caused by the Swamp Demon. Their contrasting tracking methods and fighting styles lead to cooperation, with Tanjiro’s modified Water Wheel exposing the submerged duplicates. Nezuko’s protection of Kazumi challenges Sasuke’s view of demons, though Tanjiro must still plead for her life afterward 43 44 47 50.

In the shifting mansion, Tanjiro guides Zenitsu and Hui through the changing rooms. They find Hui’s sister after Sasuke kills Kyogai and ends the spatial maze 55.

Mount Natagumo and the Hashira Trial

Tanjiro tries to avoid injuring Corps members controlled by threads, then continues into the forest despite his damaged sword. His confrontations with the Father Spider Demon and Rui expose the limits of his Water Breathing 62 63 66 71.

Although he awakens Hinokami Kagura and combines it with Nezuko’s Exploding Blood, Rui survives their attack. Giyu intervenes when the exhausted Tanjiro can no longer defend himself; Sasuke ultimately kills Rui 71 72 73 78.

At headquarters, Tanjiro faces condemnation for harboring Nezuko. Kagaya confirms his approval of the siblings and directs Tanjiro to earn acknowledgment through victories over the Twelve Kizuki and the protection of human lives 80 83 84.

Mugen Train

Tanjiro joins Rengoku’s investigation and helps defend passengers from Enmu’s flesh. Working with Inosuke, he locates the demon’s neck bone near the locomotive and attacks it with Constant Flux. All two hundred passengers survive 103 110 113 116.

After Akaza attacks, Tanjiro is too injured to match him. He throws his sword into the fleeing demon’s heart, but Akaza escapes. Tanjiro then rushes to the wounded Rengoku, who survives the battle 117 127 128.

Entertainment District

Tanjiro fights alongside Tengen Uzui against Daki’s Obi Clone, defending surrounding homes before exploiting the opening Uzui creates at its core. He later witnesses Gyutaro’s overwhelming strength and grieves over Uzui’s apparent impending death from poison 144 150 164.

Swordsmith Village

Repeated sword damage sends Tanjiro to the Swordsmith Village with Sasuke. There, he encounters Muichiro’s indifference and overwhelming strength, while a confrontation with Genya ends when Sasuke intervenes 171 175 178 180.

During the village battle, he tracks Hantengu’s main body but initially cannot cut through its shell. He later recalls Nezuko forcing him toward Hantengu rather than letting him protect her from sunrise. Believing her dead, he searches the ruins in despair before discovering that she can stand in sunlight 193 196.

Final Battle with Muzan

Sasuke gathers the surviving swordsmen in a sealed arena within the Infinity Castle. Protected by Susanoo, Tanjiro overcomes his exhaustion long enough to connect Sun Breathing’s twelve forms and grievously wound Muzan 262 266.

Muzan then targets him as a potential vessel and critically injures him. Rengoku rescues him, and Tanjiro returns to battle with a clearer understanding of the Thirteenth Form. His endlessly cycling attacks become the focus of the Corps’ final combined strike 285 286 289 290.

Demon King Crisis and Recovery

After delivering the decisive blow, Tanjiro appears lifeless before transforming into a sunlight-resistant Demon King. His companions struggle to restrain him, but his hesitation before Nezuko reveals that his humanity has not disappeared 292 293 294.

Sasuke connects him to memories of his companions, while their voices reach him from outside. Tanjiro reclaims his identity, breaks Muzan’s chains, and confronts the remaining echo within his soul. Kanao’s final injection then restores his human body 301 302 303 304 305.

Tanjiro survives to witness the Corps’ disbandment. Alongside the other surviving swordsmen, he lays down his Nichirin Blade as their duty comes to an end 309.
