Background / History

Uchiha Massacre and Team 7

Sasuke survives the Uchiha Clan’s massacre, retaining traumatic memories of his parents’ bodies and Itachi’s demand that he live through hatred. When introducing himself to Kakashi, he declares two ambitions: restoring the clan and killing the man responsible 6 44.

He joins Naruto Uzumaki, Sakura Haruno, and specially assigned member Shengu Xuan in an unusually large Team 7. During the bell test, Kakashi defeats him with Earth Release: Headhunter Jutsu and criticizes his failure to consider his teammates. Shengu Xuan subsequently gives Sasuke one of the captured bells 5 7 8.

Passing the sealed Uchiha grounds during the team’s first D-rank mission, Sasuke confronts Shengu Xuan over his insults toward the clan. Shengu Xuan claims knowledge of the Sharingan’s final evolution, Itachi’s secret, and a hidden mastermind. He makes lasting three minutes against him the condition for learning more, giving Sasuke another reason to pursue strength 11 12.

Land of Waves

Sasuke protects Sakura from one of the Demon Brothers, blocking a poisoned claw with a kunai despite injuring his hand. After witnessing Shengu Xuan’s abilities, he theorizes that they are ninjutsu performed without hand seals through exceptional chakra control 14 16.

During tree-climbing training, Sasuke initially climbs seven or eight meters by carefully regulating chakra through his feet. Shengu Xuan’s misleading explanation of his healing then convinces Sasuke that direct control over the body and mind is a higher training path. He begins trying to sense his own cells 21 22.

Sasuke challenges Haku to test this training, but the Demonic Mirroring Ice Crystals overwhelm both his perception and fire techniques. Shengu Xuan intervenes before three senbon strike his vital points, then uses the Horse Talisman to restore his injuries, chakra, and stamina 24 25.

Chūnin Exams and Konoha’s Invasion

After returning, Sasuke challenges Shengu Xuan again, only to lose to an animated wooden training post. He nevertheless insists that the Chūnin Exams will demonstrate the Uchiha Clan’s superiority 32 34.

In the Forest of Death, Sasuke and Naruto secure the Earth Scroll after defeating Rain ninja. Orochimaru then targets Sasuke as a prospective vessel. Sasuke breaks free of his terrifying illusion and attacks with Dragon Fire Technique, but Orochimaru disperses the flames and kicks him through three trees. Sasuke later endures the Cursed Seal of Heaven and welcomes its power despite Naruto’s alarm 37 38 44.

Sasuke defeats Akado Yoroi in the preliminaries, after which his cursed seal erupts and Kakashi takes him away to suppress it. During the invasion, his Chidori fails to stop Gaara’s partial transformation. Shengu Xuan saves him and subsequently reduces the fully manifested Shukaku to a powerless Husky, further exposing the gap between their abilities 47 62 64.

Defection and Forced Return

Hospitalized and humiliated by Itachi’s contempt, Sasuke becomes increasingly jealous of Naruto’s and Shengu Xuan’s growth. The Sound Four exploit this insecurity, restrain him, and promise that Orochimaru can provide the power Konoha cannot. Sasuke agrees to leave 88.

Sakura intercepts him near the village entrance and begs him to stay—or take her along. He knocks her unconscious, places her on a bench, and departs with the Sound Four. During the pursuit, Orochimaru’s subordinates transport him in a coffin 89 90 93.

At the Valley of the End, Sasuke rejects Naruto’s appeal, attacks him, and challenges Shengu Xuan. Even Level Two of his cursed seal, Wailing Chidori, further fire and lightning techniques, and genjutsu fail to overcome Shengu Xuan. He is knocked unconscious and carried back by Naruto 97 98 99.

Tsunade orders Sasuke temporarily confined in Konoha’s heavily guarded special prison for his attempted defection, with Kakashi responsible for monitoring and teaching him. He becomes outwardly subdued, spending his days silently staring into space 102.

Postwar Revolution

After the war, Sasuke argues that the Five Great Nations’ village system perpetuates conflict and produced the Uchiha massacre. He proposes overthrowing it and becoming a single ruler who bears the world’s hatred, using absolute power to prevent future wars. Naruto rejects this plan 170.

Shengu Xuan initially declines to interfere unless Sasuke harms someone connected to him. Sasuke nevertheless challenges him at the Valley of the End to prove his qualifications. Perfect Susanoo and a Kagutsuchi-shaped Amaterasu sword fail against Shengu Xuan, leaving Sasuke bloodied and exhausted. He briefly accepts Naruto’s support and questions whether Naruto’s approach could change the world 170 171.

Sasuke then reasserts his revolutionary ambitions, insisting that defeat does not make his ideas wrong. After destroying his renewed Susanoo, Shengu Xuan breaks his left knee. Naruto shields the injured Sasuke, while Shengu Xuan states that Sasuke lacks the power to carry out his plan 172.

• Normal appearance: Short black hair, black eyes, and bangs that sometimes conceal his expression 6 21 171.

Personality

Sasuke is cold, proud of his Uchiha heritage, and intensely sensitive to being considered weak or burdensome. He repeatedly treats his clan’s reputation as something he must personally vindicate, even after defeats expose his limitations 6 21 32 34.

His desire for revenge makes him willing to accept dangerous power and abandon relationships. His fascination with Shengu Xuan shifts between admiration, obsessive analysis, jealousy, and hostility. The same pursuit also drives sustained training, including his attempts to reproduce powers he fundamentally misunderstands 16 22 32 88 98.

After the war, Sasuke expresses his ambitions more calmly but remains unwilling to compromise. He identifies systemic causes of violence yet believes that imposing his own absolute authority is the solution. Even after acknowledging that he cannot defeat Shengu Xuan, he refuses to abandon his plan 170 172.

Sharingan and Genjutsu

Sasuke uses his Sharingan to read attacks, inspect chakra, and aim at vulnerable points 14 24 62.

• Detects Haku’s change in chakra nature and precisely intercepts incoming ice senbon 24.
