Background

Before becoming Team 7's instructor, Kakashi served as an elite ANBU operative, developing the sensory skills and combat experience he later used on missions. He was already renowned as the Copy Ninja when assigned to lead Naruto Uzumaki, Sakura Haruno, Sasuke Uchiha, and the specially appointed fourth member, Shengu Xuan 5 16.

His memories of Obito and Rin strongly influence his concern for comrades. During the bell test, Shengu Xuan's criticism of people who cannot protect their teammates brings back those memories and Kakashi's promise to protect his companions 9.

Personality

Kakashi presents himself as lazy, evasive, and difficult to impress. During introductions, he gives his name but refuses to share his likes or dislikes, claiming to have no particular dream. Beneath this manner, he is a demanding instructor who emphasizes teamwork and practical fundamentals. He criticizes Sasuke for focusing only on his opponent rather than considering his teammates, and later insists that precise chakra control must come before learning impressive techniques 7 21.

Shengu Xuan repeatedly forces Kakashi to reassess his own authority and understanding of ninjutsu. His initial suspicion becomes fear, then reverence after the bell test. Story Role / Major Arcs

Team 7's Formation

Hiruzen assigns Kakashi an unusual four-student team, with instructions to pay special attention to Shengu Xuan. During rooftop introductions, Shengu Xuan's dream of longevity alarms Kakashi because of its association with Orochimaru's forbidden immortality research 5 6.

Kakashi follows with a two-bell survival test that apparently requires at least two students to fail. He quickly defeats Naruto, Sasuke, and Sakura, but Shengu Xuan overwhelms him with regenerating Shadow Ninjas and speed beyond his Sharingan's perception. After taking both bells, Shengu Xuan gives them to Sasuke and Sakura and challenges Kakashi's treatment of teammates 7 8 9.

Kakashi passes everyone and thanks Shengu Xuan. His report prompts Hiruzen to make forging a genuine bond with the boy a long-term S-rank mission, rather than allowing Danzo to turn him into a weapon 10.

Early Missions and the Land of Waves

During Team 7's early assignments, Kakashi witnesses Shengu Xuan's destructive abilities and the deaths of the Demon Brothers. Unable to explain the powers, he reports Sasuke's theory of “ninjutsu without hand seals” as the only barely plausible account available to him 13 14 15 16.

On Tazuna's escort mission, Kakashi protects the client from Zabuza and later begins emergency chakra-control training. At the bridge, he takes advantage of Zabuza's reaction to Haku's defeat, restraining him with Ninken and preparing a finishing strike. Gato's arrival interrupts the confrontation, and Shengu Xuan ultimately leaves the two defeated Kirigakure ninja in Kakashi's custody 17 21 27 30.

Konoha's Invasion and Itachi's Return

Kakashi and Guy break the arena's sleep genjutsu and fight the invading Sound and Sand ninja while civilians evacuate. Prolonged combat depletes his chakra, and he warns Shengu Xuan that touching the Four Violet Flames Formation surrounding the Hokage's battle would be fatal 59 60 65.

When Itachi and Kisame later enter Konoha, Kakashi attacks Itachi with Lightning Blade. Itachi counters with Tsukuyomi, subjecting him to seventy-two hours of perceived torment. Kakashi warns the others not to look into Itachi's eyes before falling unconscious 74 75.

Sasuke's Confinement and Team Kakashi

After Sasuke's attempted defection is stopped, Kakashi becomes personally responsible for monitoring and teaching him in Konoha's special prison 102.

Following the training period, Kakashi challenges the returning Shengu Xuan and is defeated when his Lightning Blade is absorbed and countered. Despite lingering numbness, he accepts Tsunade's immediate order to lead Naruto and Sakura on Gaara's rescue mission. Pakkun's tracking helps the group pursue the Akatsuki 111 112 113.

On the return journey, Root traps the team inside a Four Violet Flames Formation. Shengu Xuan neutralizes the poison mist and explosive tags, kills the attackers, and directs Kakashi and the others to return to Konoha while he goes after Danzo 119.

Pain's Assault and the Fourth Shinobi World War

During Pain's invasion, Kakashi fights Deva Path alongside Choza and Choji Akimichi. Shinra Tensei hurls them through buildings, and Kakashi finds himself unable to reach the opponent with Lightning Blade 139.

He later witnesses Obito's identity being exposed and fights alongside Guy, Naruto, Killer B, and the Shadowkhan during the war. After Kaguya's defeat, Kakashi tells Naruto not to disturb the sleeping Shengu Xuan, concluding that nothing in their world can threaten him 148 156 168.
