Background

Tsunade is one of Konoha’s Sannin alongside Jiraiya and Orochimaru, and the granddaughter of the village’s founder, Hashirama Senju. She left Konoha many years before the search for the Fifth Hokage, leaving village leadership uncertain of her whereabouts 78.

The deaths of her younger brother Nawaki and lover Dan Katō left her deeply embittered toward Konoha and the Hokage title. She associated both losses with the pursuit of that position and initially refused to return to a village filled with painful memories 82.

Her gambling became notorious throughout the shinobi world. Known as the “legendary Big Fat Sheep” for repeatedly losing, she was welcomed by casinos despite her otherwise formidable reputation 79.

Appearance

Personality

Tsunade is proud, confrontational, and particularly sensitive to comments about her age. Shengu Xuan repeatedly provokes her by calling her an old hag or auntie; she insists on being addressed as “Lord Hokage” or “Big Sister Tsunade.” Her anger often manifests physically, including cracking a gambling table, smashing her desk, and throwing ink bottles 80 87 102 111.

Her gambling exposes a much less disciplined side. Convinced that she can recover her losses, she continues wagering after losing her money, treasured necklace, and medical scroll. Eventually, she stakes her name, freedom, and life rather than accept defeat 81 82.

Despite returning to Konoha under coercion, Tsunade regains a sense of responsibility during her inauguration and resolves to protect the village her grandfather founded. She is also pragmatic about Shengu Xuan: recognizing that force will not secure his cooperation, she uses privileges, money, and access to barbecue to obtain his help 87 88 89.

Her concern for Jiraiya remains strong beneath her abrasive manner. When he returns from Amegakure missing an arm, she becomes visibly distressed and immediately examines him with medical chakra 138.

• After Hiruzen survives the Konoha Crush with injuries that prevent further combat, Jiraiya rejects the Hokage position and proposes Tsunade instead. He takes Naruto and Shengu Xuan to find her 70 78.
• The search leads to Tanzaku Town, where Tsunade has exhausted her money at the Big Tycoon Casino 79.
• Shengu Xuan secretly animates the dice with the Rat Talisman, defeating her in more than thirty rounds and taking her remaining possessions 80 81.
• Her final wager requires her to return to Konoha as Hokage and pay his barbecue bills whenever he is in the village. After losing, she attacks him, is defeated, and receives threats intended to enforce the agreement 82.
• Orochimaru interrupts with an offer to resurrect Dan and Nawaki in exchange for healing his hands. Negotiations collapse, and Kabuto attempts to abduct the injured Tsunade 83.
• After Shengu Xuan defeats Orochimaru and Manda, Tsunade agrees to return and is formally inaugurated as Fifth Hokage 86 87.

Hokage Administration and Sasuke’s Retrieval

• Shengu Xuan’s first major barbecue bill totals five million ryō, consuming three months of the village’s hospitality budget. Tsunade responds by arranging his promotion and seeking useful work for him 87 88.
• With most senior ninja unavailable, she orders him to retrieve Sasuke. When rank and duty fail to persuade him, she threatens to cut off his barbecue 89.
• Following the mission, she offers him further promotion to Jōnin or ANBU squad leader. He declines, and she instead grants extended leave and Konoha’s highest-level Jōnin travel pass 102.
• Two years later, his accounts of fighting the Raikage and Eight-Tails’ jinchūriki and intervening in the Land of Water alarm her because of the potential diplomatic consequences 111.

Root’s Destruction

• Tsunade arrives at Root’s ruined underground base after Shengu Xuan kills Danzo. Privately relieved, she regards Danzo as a deeply entrenched threat she had been unable to remove herself 123.
• She publicly attributes the destruction to a dangerous experimental accident, rejects the advisers’ demand to punish Shengu Xuan, and permanently abolishes Root 124.

Pain’s Invasion and Loss of Authority

• After Jiraiya returns with intelligence about Nagato and the Six Paths of Pain, Tsunade faces their assault on Konoha. She deploys Katsuyu and orders Kakashi and Might Guy to buy time for civilian evacuation 138 139.
• She holds Shizune as Nagato’s Rinne Rebirth restores those killed in the invasion. Afterward, she witnesses the villagers’ overwhelming devotion to Shengu Xuan and recognizes the displacement of her own authority 143 144.
• When envoys from the other great villages demand answers, Shengu Xuan declares that Tsunade is no longer Hokage and that he will control Konoha 145.
• Tsunade and Jiraiya persuade him to spare the envoys and attend the Five Kage Summit. At the summit, she submits alongside Mei and Gaara; he then forcibly makes them stand 146 149.

War and Postwar Crises
