Background / History

Ancient Usurpation

Imu is identified as a survivor of the Void Century and the last monarch of the Great Kingdom. Laugh Tale’s historical trial names Imu as an ancestor of the Celestial Dragons who betrayed the Alliance of All Races and the Ancient Kingdom’s pursuit of freedom and equality. Imu’s followers tampered with the Ark Maxim system, erased history, and established a new order 32 79.

According to King, Imu led the seizure of the Ancient System’s highest-level access. The usurpers converted parts of the World-Cleansing Furnace into destructive weapons and repurposed Uranus for weather manipulation and immortality. They also branded the Lunarian guardians as enemies of the gods and nearly exterminated them 66.

Imu fused part of their will with Uranus’s original control core. This integration sustained their eight-hundred-year lifespan and allowed precise, worldwide life-energy extraction, at the cost of aspects of their humanity. Lin Yan also accuses Imu of murdering Nika through conspiracy eight hundred years earlier 33 85.

The Great Cleansing

The Great Cleansing was intended to use the altered Uranus core to extract the planet’s life force in a forced “reset” or “harvest,” sustaining the rulers’ immortality and dominion. Powerful Devil Fruit users were especially valuable as fuel or sacrifices 60.

By the voyage toward Laugh Tale, Revolutionary Army intelligence indicated that a device deep within the Red Line was already extracting life energy on a potentially global scale. Imu defended the cleansing as necessary pruning that would produce a purer, more obedient world 73 85.

Appearance

  • Initial appearance: A desiccated corpse in magnificent robes, seated on the Empty Throne and holding a scepter topped with a large red gemstone. Upon awakening, Imu’s eyes burn with ghostly blue flames 32.
  • Uranus projection: A slender, elegant, indistinct figure on a phantom throne, with eyes resembling an endless starry sky 85.
  • Final physical manifestation: Silver pupils, silver hair, jade-like skin, and a silver-white robe. Damage from Lin Yan’s creation attack produces cracks across the body from which silver light escapes 87.
  • Void form: An expanding expanse of silver nothingness, with Imu’s distorted face intermittently visible at its center 87 88.

Personality

Imu regards personal freedom and choice as sources of chaos, claiming that absolute order and periodic purges are necessary to preserve the world. They dismiss individual suffering as an acceptable cost of maintaining the whole and justify authority through superior power and understanding 85 87.

Their composure rests on an assumption of overwhelming superiority. Imu repeatedly calls opponents “ants” and dismisses emotions and bonds as unfit foundations for divine authority. That indifference gives way to anger when Uranus’s control is threatened, then destructive obsession when their order collapses: rather than accept defeat, Imu attempts to annihilate the world and await another supposedly pure era 71 85 87 88.

Abilities & Skills

Uranus Integration and Longevity

Fusion with Uranus makes the weapon an extension of Imu’s will and sustains their extraordinary lifespan 85.

  • Directs energy turbulence, silver energy streams, and life-siphoning beams within Uranus’s core 85.
  • Uses the altered system for planetary life-energy extraction and weather control 60 66 73.
  • Retains powers beyond Uranus: losing direct control of the core does not prevent the final confrontation at the Empty Throne 85 87.
  • Weakness: The Forced Permission Stripping and Core Reset protocol removes Imu’s control permissions and severely damages the fused will 85.

Devil Fruit Source Manipulation

Imu’s scepter contains a fragment of the Devil Fruit Source, producing blood-red light that overwhelms ordinary fruit-based attacks 32.

  • Suppresses Lin Yan’s full-power Furnace-Furnace Fruit flames and holds his body immobile 32.
  • Incinerates Robin’s manifested arms and overpowers Ace’s strongest available Flame Emperor attack 32.
  • Intends to devour Lin Yan, identified as the last descendant of the D. Clan’s royal family, to return fully to life 32.
  • Limit: Lin Yan’s Flame of Dawn disperses the red light and purifies Imu’s corpse-like body 33.

Remote Will and Mental Pressure

Imu can act through a projected will while their true body remains elsewhere 81.

  • Communicates directly with consciousness rather than through sound 85 87.
  • Exerts pressure on an opponent’s fundamental level of existence, impairing movement and even the ability to remain standing 32 85.
  • Reaches into Laugh Tale’s frozen space through a silver-gauntleted hand and attempts to claim Joy Boy’s legacy 81.
  • Weakness: The connection permits Lin Yan’s allies to counterattack Imu’s consciousness core within the Red Line through Trinity resonance 81 82.

Conceptual and Spacetime Authority

Imu attacks the rules and concepts underlying an opponent’s powers rather than relying solely on physical damage.

  • Divine Authority, first—Concept Stripping: Weakens Lin Yan’s connection to creation and purification, diminishing the protective and restorative concepts within his domain 85.
  • Time-stasis: Freezes the occupants of Laugh Tale’s spherical space until Lin Yan completes Joy Boy’s inheritance 81.
  • Divine Punishment: End—Void Zeroing: Attempts to collapse the spherical space, destroying the intruders and Laugh Tale’s core together 81.
  • Existence Denial and Spacetime Regression: Attacks Lin Yan’s existence and connection to the present 87.
  • Myriad Things Return to Order: Eternal Stasis: Imposes an unchanging domain supported by a vast cosmic star-chart manifestation 87.
  • Limits: Lin Yan’s Definition Reinforcement anchors him in the present, while his companions’ combined will powers the creation attack that shatters Eternal Stasis 87.

Void Devouring

Imu’s final transformation returns surrounding existence to nothingness 87 88.

  • Consumes light, matter, energy, and spatial structures 88.
  • Generates an invisible pull that prevents Ace and Luffy from retreating with the exhausted Lin Yan 88.
  • Erases part of General Franky immediately upon contact 88.
  • Decisive counter: Lin Yan’s higher existence authority restores what was consumed and strips Imu’s connection to the void, culminating in complete annihilation 88.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Red-gemmed scepter — Holds part of the Devil Fruit Source and channels Imu’s blood-red suppressive light. After the corpse-like body disintegrates, only the red gemstone remains 32 33.
  • Empty Throne — Imu’s seat of rule and a focal point of the final manifestation’s authority. Lin Yan destroys it after Imu’s death rather than claiming it 87 89.

Relationships

  • Lin Yan — Principal opponent and Nika’s successor. Initially targeted for consumption and recovery of the Origin Key; later defeats Imu through collective will and higher existence authority 32 70 88.
  • Joy Boy — Ideological enemy whose legacy Imu claims as a rightful possession. Imu condemns Joy Boy’s liberation as destructive idealism 81 85.
  • Nico Robin — Historical opponent whom Imu calls Ohara’s surviving orphan and a prying observer. Robin directly enables the Forced Reset that strips Imu’s control of Uranus 85.
  • Dragon and Sabo — Revolutionary enemies. Their Concept Disruption Bomb prevents Imu from detonating Uranus before the reset can finish 85.
  • King and the Lunarians — Survivors and descendants of the guardians persecuted under Imu’s usurpation. King supplies crucial information about Uranus and Imu’s stolen authority 66.
  • Holy Knights and CP0 — Government forces serving Imu’s rule. The Holy Knights receive responsibility for eliminating Nika’s successor, while both groups defend Uranus during the final conflict 48 84 86.

Story Role / Major Arcs

Pangaea Castle Confrontation

Imu awakens when Lin Yan retrieves the golden key hidden in the Empty Throne’s left armrest. After overpowering Lin Yan and seriously injuring Robin and Ace, Imu confronts Lin Yan’s newly awakened Nika form. Flame of Dawn Purification reduces the corpse-like body to ashes and light, leaving the scepter’s red gem behind 32 33.

This is not Imu’s final death. Later, Sengoku reports that Imu has awakened and ordered the Holy Knights to handle Nika’s successor 48.

Exposure and the Voyage to Laugh Tale

The Ancient Factory reveals the Great Cleansing’s purpose, and King’s testimony connects Imu’s immortality to the stolen ancient infrastructure. Lin Yan subsequently names Imu in a worldwide broadcast declaring the Dawn Alliance’s war against the World Government 60 66 70.

Imu dismisses the alliance as the clamor of ants. Meanwhile, the Revolutionary Army uncovers escalating life-energy extraction and joins Lin Yan’s effort to stop the harvest 71 73.

Attack on Laugh Tale

Imu freezes the Hall of Truth’s spherical space and attempts to seize Joy Boy’s golden orb. Lin Yan breaks the restraint and completes the inheritance, prompting Imu to attempt the destruction of both the legacy and its inheritors. A counterattack amplified by Poseidon, Uranus, and Pluton injures Imu’s consciousness and forces the projected hand to withdraw 81 82.

Uranus Reset

At Uranus’s core, Imu battles Lin Yan while Robin locates the emergency access point. Robin injects the reset authorization through an opening created by Lin Yan. Imu attempts to detonate the core in retaliation, but Dragon and Sabo disrupt the self-destruction long enough for the reset to execute 85.

The protocol removes Imu’s direct control, clears the life-siphoning programs, and badly damages the fused will. Imu survives and retreats toward the Empty Throne chamber 85 86.

Final Defeat and Aftermath

In the Empty Throne chamber, Imu’s existence-erasing and stasis powers fail against Lin Yan’s reinforced presence and his companions’ shared will. After Dawn’s Radiance shatters the domain, Imu transforms into Void Devouring 87.

Sabo brings a communicator carrying support from outside the chamber, and people across the world send their hopes toward Lin Yan. Their collective will enables him to restore erased existence and completely annihilate Imu 88.

Imu’s death is followed by the collapse of the World Government’s authority. The hidden history and planned purge are made public, the Empty Throne is destroyed, and a worldwide consultation process begins to determine the future without installing another solitary ruler 89 90.
