| Further Gear Second and Gear Third training | 34 | Receives detailed principles and exercises for both gears. Experiments with accelerating his circulation and learns to approach his fruit through the concept of freedom rather than elasticity alone. |
| Preliminary Nika/Joy Boy awakening | 47 | A distant resonance with Lin Yan and Ace triggers a three-second transformation. Luffy recognizes his fruit’s true name and his connection to Joy Boy before returning to normal. |
| Enlarged attacks with advanced Haki coating | 58 | Opens the Onigashima assault with Giant Rocket, enlarging his arms and coating them in top-tier Armament and Conqueror’s Haki. |
| Embryonic Gear Fifth | 62 | Undergoes a qualitative awakening while fighting Kaido. White steam surrounds his body, and his liberating will reaches his brothers across the battlefield. |
| Expanded Gear Fifth combat applications | 63 | Escapes a CP0 ambush through extreme bodily distortion, then uses Bajrang Gun and Rapid-Fire Bajrang Gun against Kaido. |

| Complete shared resonance | 86 | Joins his will with Lin Yan, Ace, Sabo, and their companions. The resonance rapidly restores Luffy’s strength and condition while sharpening his mental clarity. |
Background
Luffy is Garp’s biological grandson and Dragon’s son. His brotherhood with Ace and Sabo is rooted in a childhood oath at Goa Kingdom’s garbage mountain; his connection to Lin Yan also develops through their shared family ties to Garp 5 47 73.
Initially still living in Foosha Village, Luffy sets sail earlier than Lin Yan expects after receiving a letter from Sabo. The letter reveals that Sabo is alive, serving with the Revolutionary Army, and wants Luffy to train hard. Luffy explains that he could not wait after learning that both Ace and Sabo had gone to sea 2 16.
Appearance
Luffy is introduced as a boy wearing a straw hat, with a broad grin that remains characteristic of him throughout his journey 16 91.
- Straw hat: His signature possession, which he calls his treasure 75.
- Gear Second: His skin reddens and steam rises from his body 16.
- Preliminary Nika awakening: Faint golden markings appear on his skin, his hair becomes slightly white, and his smile briefly takes on a divine quality 47.
- Embryonic Gear Fifth: White steam surrounds his altered rubber body during the battle with Kaido 62.
Personality
Luffy is exuberant, impulsive, and openly affectionate. He tackles Ace in excitement at Water 7 and later wraps his rubber arms around Sabo during their reunion. His appetite repeatedly overrides his sense of occasion: he asks for meat during Wano’s alliance meeting and returns to demanding food immediately after his first brief Nika awakening 16 47 56 73.
His ambition centers on freedom, companionship, and happiness. He wants to become the “freest Pirate King,” grow strong enough to protect his friends, and help his brothers. Shanks considers his ability to bring laughter to others especially suited to bearing the truth Roger left behind 34 75.
Beneath his carefree behavior, Luffy deeply fears losing those close to him. Laugh Tale’s trials confront him with wounded companions and the apparent loss of Ace and Sabo. He overcomes these visions through his resolve to protect them, aided by Lin Yan’s support 78 79.
Abilities & Skills
Nika Devil Fruit
Luffy’s rubber abilities originate from the Human-Human Fruit, Mythical Zoan, Model: Nika. His preliminary awakening identifies him with Joy Boy’s unfinished work of liberation 47.
- Elastic body: Stretches his arms, legs, and neck for combat, movement, and support 16 74 75.
- Enlarged limbs: Uses giant fists, arms, and legs in attacks such as Giant Pistol, Giant Rocket, and Giant Axe 58 76 80.
- Awakened flexibility: Twists his body at physically impossible angles and loops an arm behind himself to intercept a Seastone blade 63.
- External rubberization guidance: Lin Yan teaches him that his fruit can potentially give rubber properties to air, terrain, and enemies; these applications are explained as possibilities rather than demonstrated mastery at Water 7 16.
- Seastone vulnerability: CP0’s weapons remain a serious threat to his nascent Gear Fifth body and could temporarily deprive him of his powers if their ambush succeeds 63.
Gear Techniques
Luffy uses multiple gears to change his speed, strength, and fighting style 16 79 80 81.
- Gear Second: Accelerates circulation through his rubber body to increase speed and strength temporarily. Named attacks include Jet Pistol and Jet Rocket 16 34.
- Gear Fourth — Boundman: Greatly increases strength and speed; uses King Kong Gun against an armored Blackbeard officer 79.
- Gear Fourth — Snakeman: Emphasizes twisting movements and pursuing punches, demonstrated through King Cobra 80.
- Gear Fifth: Releases Nika’s liberating power and enables extreme bodily freedom. Its early manifestations include a powerful, drumlike heartbeat 62 63 81.
- Bajrang Gun: Combines an enormous rubber strike with Conqueror’s Haki and newly awakened Nika power. Its Rapid-Fire variation delivers repeated giant punches 63.
Haki
Luffy receives a foundational explanation of all three forms of Haki from Lin Yan and later demonstrates advanced combat applications 16 58 79.
- Observation Haki: Predicts attacks to avoid poison while fighting at Laugh Tale’s Silver Gate 79.
- Armament Haki: Coats his enlarged arms during the attack on Onigashima’s harbor 58.
- Conqueror’s Haki: Coats Giant Rocket and Bajrang Gun, reinforcing his direct clashes with Emperor-level opponents 58 63.
Brotherly and Trinity Resonance
Luffy’s will embodies freedom and liberation, complementing Lin Yan’s creation and protection and Ace’s burning and sacrifice 64.
- Distant resonance: His first Nika awakening occurs while separated from his brothers, mediated by the Double D Vivre Card 47.
- Trinity Complete Form: Unlocks the possibility of combining Lin Yan, Ace, and Luffy’s divine factors into True Sun God Nika Form (100%) when all three are present 47.
- Initial complete-form limits: Five-minute duration, thirty-day cooldown, and a cost of one year of lifespan per use 47.
- Shared-will applications: Helps calm the tsunami threatening Onigashima and anchors Lin Yan during the dangerous approach to Laugh Tale 64 77.
- Later complete resonance: Extends beyond the three brothers to include Sabo and their companions, restoring Luffy and Ace while renewing Lin Yan’s strength 86.
Equipment & Items
- Straw hat: Luffy’s treasured possession. Shanks formally entrusts Roger’s inherited hat to him during their meeting aboard the Red Force, linking it to adventure, freedom, and promises 75.
- Fruit-development notebooks: Lin Yan provides training material covering rubber applications, Gear Second, and Gear Third, while encouraging Luffy to develop his own style 16 34.
- Double D Vivre Card: Made from Lin Yan and Ace’s flames, it can sense both brothers’ conditions. Its golden flames merge into Luffy during his preliminary awakening 34 47.
- Road Poneglyph rubbing: The Kozuki family gives the Straw Hat Pirates a rubbing after Wano’s liberation, bringing their collected coordinates to three of the four needed for Laugh Tale 69.
- Ships: Travels aboard the Going Merry, temporarily accompanies Lin Yan aboard the Dawn Ark, and resumes independent adventures aboard the Thousand Sunny 16 71 90.
Relationships
- Lin Yan / Monkey D. Yan — Older brother figure, mentor, and ally. Rescues Luffy at Water 7, teaches him Haki and fruit development, and fights beside him through Wano, Laugh Tale, and the confrontation with Imu 16 34 63 88.
- Portgas D. Ace — Sworn brother. Luffy trusts Lin Yan to rescue Ace while he attacks Onigashima; their shared will later contributes to the brothers’ resonance 47 56 64.
- Sabo — Sworn brother whose letter prompts Luffy’s early departure. Their emotional reunion takes place aboard the Dawn Ark 16 73.
- Monkey D. Garp — Biological grandfather; the family connection through which Lin Yan also recognizes Luffy as a younger brother 5.
- Monkey D. Dragon — Father and Revolutionary Army leader. Their forces join together in the Sea of the End, and they later co-sign the worldwide disclosure of hidden history 73 90.
- Shanks — Trusted pirate and bearer of the straw hat’s inherited promise. Counsels Luffy about laughter, freedom, and the responsibility attached to ONE PIECE 75.
- Straw Hat Pirates — His crew and companions in his pursuit of Pirate King. Protecting them is central to his ambition, and they continue exploring together after the final conflict 34 79 90.
- Kaido — Major opponent in Wano. Luffy delivers the decisive barrage after Zoro and Lin Yan create an opening 63.
- Imu — Enemy whose treatment of human lives Luffy openly rejects. Luffy contributes his Nika power and will to the alliance’s resistance 81 87.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Water 7 and Alabasta
Luffy reaches Water 7 with Zoro, Nami, and Usopp while trying to earn enough money for a larger ship. After their escort job ends in disaster and they fail to pay a restaurant bill, shipwrights chase and beat them. Lin Yan intervenes, reunites Luffy with Ace, and turns a brief sparring test into a lesson on Haki and Devil Fruit development 16.
At Alabasta, Lin Yan gives Luffy further training notes and the Double D Vivre Card. Luffy promises to become strong enough to protect his friends and help his brothers before the two crews depart in different directions 34.
Awakening and Wano’s Liberation
A resonance originating with Lin Yan reaches Luffy aboard the Going Merry, briefly awakening his awareness of Nika and Joy Boy. The event also unlocks the brothers’ Trinity Complete Form 47.
In Wano, Luffy joins the allied assault while Lin Yan’s infiltration team seeks Ace. He breaches Onigashima’s harbor, clashes with Jack, and later awakens an embryonic Gear Fifth against Kaido. After repelling CP0’s ambush, he defeats Kaido with a barrage made possible by Zoro and Lin Yan’s intervention 56 58 62 63.
Although exhausted, Luffy contributes his will to the resonance that calms the subsequent tsunami. His crew then helps eliminate surviving Beasts Pirates and receives a Road Poneglyph rubbing 64 69.
Voyage to Laugh Tale
The Straw Hats temporarily travel aboard the Dawn Ark, with Luffy’s Vivre Card serving as an important guide. During the voyage, he reunites with Sabo, meets Shanks, and helps secure companions against the Sea of the End’s violent storms 71 73 74 75.
On Laugh Tale, Luffy overcomes the Heart-Reflecting Corridor and fights Blackbeard’s officers at the Silver Gate. He then accompanies Lin Yan along the Path of Will, where the two overcome visions of their deepest fears and receive the Key of Will needed to reach the Hall of Truth 78 79.
Imu’s Defeat and the New Era
Luffy fights the Holy Knights and supports Lin Yan’s resistance to Imu at Laugh Tale. His Gear Fifth power strengthens the allied domain, and his will later contributes to the purification of the Dark-Dark Fruit’s core 80 81 82.
During the final campaign, he participates in the complete resonance and supports Lin Yan against Imu’s void. After Imu disappears and Uranus’s unstable energy is redirected, Luffy and Ace catch the collapsing Lin Yan 86 87 88.
Luffy subsequently joins Lin Yan and Dragon in publicizing the hidden history. By this point, his title of Pirate King has spread widely. He nevertheless treats the victory as the beginning of another voyage, departing aboard the Thousand Sunny to find islands absent from existing maps 90 91.
