Power Progression

Background

Ace is Gol D. Roger’s son and Lin Yan’s younger twin. According to Lin Yan’s explanation at Drum Kingdom, their biological mother disappeared shortly after their birth. Her friend Portgas D. Rouge adopted the twins and concealed their relationship from the World Government, keeping Ace with her while entrusting Lin Yan to Garp 4.

Ace initially goes to sea to prove that he is not a “son of evil.” By the beginning of Lin Yan’s journey, he has already spent three months adventuring with the Spade Pirates. Garp describes his departure as reckless: Ace sailed in a small boat without a navigator 2 6.

His reunion with Lin Yan changes that purpose. Rather than sailing only to escape Roger’s reputation, Ace resolves to help his brother change the world 6.

Personality

Ace is proud, stubborn, and eager to fight. He initially rejects Lin Yan’s claim of brotherhood and repeatedly volunteers for dangerous confrontations. Even the arrival of all three Marine Admirals excites him rather than frightens him 4 9 22.

His confidence coexists with strong concern for others. He reacts angrily when Wapol threatens Drum’s civilians, protects Robin from Imu’s attack, and attempts to stop Shirahoshi’s abduction. After being freed from Kaido’s confinement, one of his first questions concerns Luffy’s safety 5 32 45 61.

Family is central to his identity. Roger’s legacy troubles him, while Sabo’s apparent death remains a source of pain until Lin Yan reveals that Sabo survived. After his own near-death ordeal in Wano, Ace increasingly directs his anger toward responsibility for his companions and their future 2 4 14 71.

By the end of the story, he chooses to explore as Portgas D. Ace rather than define himself solely through inherited names. He still embraces Whitebeard’s will and insists that distance will never weaken his bond with his brothers 90.

Story Role / Major Arcs

Drum Kingdom and the Flame Emperor Pirates

Lin Yan finds Ace wounded during his battle with Wapol. Their meeting reveals Sabo’s survival and the twins’ concealed family history. Ace initially refuses to accept the stranger as his brother, but eventually acknowledges him after Lin Yan demonstrates his power and sincerity 3 4.

Three days later, Ace disbands the Spade Pirates and joins the newly founded Flame Emperor Pirates. In the East Blue, his bond with Lin Yan unlocks Brother Sync, and he discovers Roger’s torn log among Buggy’s treasure. His subsequent trial against Smoker ends in defeat, forcing Lin Yan to intervene 6 8 11.

Grand Line and Alabasta

At Twin Cape, Ace is visibly moved by Roger’s letter despite his reluctance to acknowledge his father. Joining his pendant with Lin Yan’s awakens their Sun-Moon Twins bloodline, and he later reunites with Luffy at Water 7 14 15 16.

Lin Yan sends him to confront Crocodile alone in the desert, where he awakens Blue Flame. During the later struggle over Pluton’s key, Ace attends Crocodile’s banquet as his brother’s representative, defeats the sand blade, and helps infiltrate the Funeral Temple. The temple’s traps leave both brothers injured and dependent on their crewmates’ rescue 21 27 28.

Ace subsequently destroys Crocodile’s sand soldiers and shields Robin from Imu. His further awakening enables him to recover rapidly from the resulting injuries 30 32 34.

Jaya, Fish-Man Island, and Whole Cake Island

On Jaya, Ace defeats Burgess with Blue Flame: Twin Dragon Coil while the crew repels Blackbeard’s ambush. At Fish-Man Island, he broadcasts Otohime’s memories, helping expose Hody’s deception, and later participates in the resonance that unlocks Trinity Complete Form 35 42 47.

He accompanies Lin Yan to Big Mom’s tea party and fights the Holy Knights alongside Robin and Tashigi 50 51.

Wano Captivity and Recovery

Ace’s weakening Vivre Card draws Lin Yan’s attention to Wano. Tama reveals that Ace protected her before leaving for dangerous training. Lin Yan eventually discovers him beneath the Volcanic Factory, where Kaido’s forces have been draining his flame power to feed the furnace and using him as bait 54 57 58.

Lin Yan, Robin, and Zoro rescue him from Seastone confinement. The extraction has depleted his vitality and damaged the essence of his Devil Fruit so severely that ordinary self-healing is insufficient. Chopper, Marco, and Wano’s medical practitioners gradually restore his ability to move, eat, train, and control a small flame 61 64 69 71.

Laugh Tale and the Final Conflict

Ace sails aboard the Dawn Ark and reunites with Sabo in the Sea of the End. At Laugh Tale, he and Zoro earn the Key of Strength by overcoming three warrior apparitions through coordinated attacks 71 73 79.

He fights beside his brothers against Blackbeard and the Holy Knights, then supports Lin Yan’s effort to remove Blackbeard’s dangerous power. His will contributes to the complete resonance that opens the route to Imu. After Imu’s defeat and the stabilization of Uranus, Ace and Luffy catch the exhausted Lin Yan as he collapses 80 82 86 88.

Independent Voyage

Following the final conflict, Ace leaves Wano aboard the Phoenix. He intends to see the changed world for himself, possibly build a small fleet, and find something worth protecting. His farewell affirms that he and his brothers will continue supporting one another despite choosing separate routes 90 91.
