Roger’s Hidden Son

As an infant, Lin Yan was left aboard Garp’s warship on a South Blue island with a note identifying him as Roger’s posthumous son. Garp registered him as Monkey D. Yan and adopted him as his grandson. His belongings included a fragment of Roger’s Vivre Card and a pendant inherited from his mother 1 2.

Garp trained him in martial arts, the Six Powers, and the history of the D. Clan. Three years before his awakening at Gray Terminal, Garp secretly settled him in Goa Kingdom, warning him to conceal his ancestry and avoid seeking Ace. Garp’s later assessment placed his strength near Vice Admiral level but noted his lack of life-and-death combat experience 1 2.

Transmigration and Departure

Lin Yan’s transmigrated consciousness awakens in an injured body at Gray Terminal and receives its memories. When kingdom guards attempt to burn the settlement with civilians still inside, he activates the Pirate King’s Throne System and forces it to fuse all three starter templates. His intervention halts the burning and draws Marine Headquarters’ and Cipher Pol’s attention 1.

Personality

Lin Yan is intensely protective of his brothers and companions. Finding Ace is his first major goal, and threats to Ace or Robin repeatedly provoke his strongest responses. That concern also extends to people connected to them: he promises to protect Tama because she is Ace’s friend and leaves Luffy a means of summoning both brothers in an emergency 1 30 32 34 54.

He distinguishes enemies from people who merely stand in his way. He refuses to fuse Doc Q’s plague fragment because he considers its application too evil, spares Buggy while forbidding further attacks on civilians, and designs a steam explosion to incapacitate attackers without killing them. This restraint is not absolute: he later burns concealed CP0 attackers to ash while defending the entrance to Laugh Tale 4 8 29 79.

His confidence is tempered by preparation. He plans contingencies before entering Mary Geoise, scouts Onigashima to collect combat data rather than force a premature victory, and notices inconsistencies in Kanjuro’s behavior.
