Arc 37The Azkaban Counteroffensive
After the prisoners vanished from Azkaban, Fudge used the crisis to push security reforms that benefited Douglas Holmes’s company. Douglas kept the Death Eaters imprisoned for reeducation while Voldemort investigated their connection, and Lucius and Charlie each found themselves drawn into Douglas’s plans.
- Barty Crouch Sr. captured the people arriving through the Teleportation Array, separated the Death Eaters, and sent the prisoners to stone pillars over an underground lake, then realized Douglas Holmes had emptied Azkaban.
- As word spread that Azkaban stood empty, Scrimgeour confronted Fudge with evidence of the raid and the Daily Prophet blamed the Ministry for failing to protect the wizarding world.
- Douglas and Hermione hosted a Hogwarts New Year gala featuring student performances, magical acts, and a midnight celebration that honored the readers and the story’s creator.
- Fudge asked Douglas to help him manage the crisis, and Douglas proposed discounted Golden Skynet defenses, an automated New Azkaban, and a prisoner labor reform that Fudge adopted.
- Douglas welcomed the captured prisoners to a reeducation center, used Inferi to enforce the lake prison, and set up a points system and essay assignments that gave Barty Crouch Jr. authority over the Death Eaters.
- Voldemort spared Lucius after hearing how the raid had failed, deduced that Douglas’s blood connected their thoughts, and ordered Lucius to begin the Hibernation Plan while he studied the connection.
- Lucius activated Malfoy Manor’s Golden Skynet defenses when the Ministry came to investigate, refused Scrimgeour entry, and told Draco that their brains were their only chance to survive.
- Douglas told Charlie that he, Bill, Sirius, and Remus had emptied Azkaban, persuaded Charlie that joining would have endangered his career, and promised him leadership in a future operation before offering him discounted defense systems.
