Shi Yu turned back to Han He. Seeing the very serious expression on his face, he thought Han He had something important to say and hurriedly composed himself before asking:
"What is it? Something going on?"
Han He nodded, his eyes fixed on the brightly lit supermarket.
A multitude of thoughts raced through Shi Yu's head in an instant.
Enemies in the supermarket? Evil Sin? The Netherworld? A Curtain-Caller? A corpse?
But Thought lit up none of them.
Just as Shi Yu was about to take out his phone and call Shen Bai, Han He spoke in an extremely serious tone.
"None of the meat in the supermarket is fresh anymore. No. Unacceptable."
Han He had already planned to make pork stew. How could he do that with bad meat?!
Shi Yu said, "...Dude..."
Han He, however, did not understand why Shi Yu had suddenly relaxed after hearing that.
Didn't Shi Yu want good food?
Didn't everyone want good food?
Shi Yu sighed, letting out the flicker of panic that had just risen within him.
Only belatedly did he realize that he, too, was now living a life where a single expression could make him tense up and wonder whether he would have to fight or die.
He did not know which of those distressed him more, but he could not be bothered to care right now.
Still, a Hunter's nose really was useful. He could smell things even through a display case. What a handy ability.
Shi Yu put his phone back in his pocket and stepped forward, saying to the somewhat bewildered Han He behind him:
"Then we'll eat vegetables. Whatever."
Han He did not really understand Shi Yu's thinking, just as he had failed to guess back then that Shi Yu was not actually the Witch Sacrifice's Daze. He seemed to get a lot of things wrong, but none of it seemed to matter much.
So Han He did not ask any more questions and shut his thoughts back inside his head once again.
He had always been a man of action. Guessing wrong never mattered. His grandfather had taught him that as long as he solved every problem in front of him, one at a time, he could still succeed in the end.
And so the two of them walked into the brightly lit supermarket, one after the other, ready to solve tonight's problem.
Han He strictly forbade buying any of the supermarket's meat today. The little supermarket's meat display was not large, and one sniff from outside had told him that none of it was very good. As Han He put it:
"Eating things that aren't fresh when you have a choice is being irresponsible toward yourself."
That sounded very reasonable, but Shi Yu thought of certain dishes in the cafeteria. He turned to Han He, who was picking out vegetables, and asked:
"Then what about when you're at school?"
Han He remained unwavering, his expression not changing in the slightest.
"At school, surviving is enough."
Well, damn.
Shi Yu was speechless for a moment. The more he learned about Han He, the more he felt that Han He was nothing like what he had originally imagined.
And although Han He said that "surviving is enough at school," his grades were actually pretty good. He clearly spent every day spacing out, yet his monthly exam scores were about the same as Shi Yu's. It was enough to make anyone jealous.
As Shi Yu put a large bottle of juice in the basket, he said:
"Never would've guessed you were such a rebel. Got that much of a problem with school?"
Han He shook his head in disagreement and said:
"I'm only expressing my views. I don't have any problem with school."
Fair enough.
Seeing that Han He had finished choosing his vegetables, Shi Yu raised the basket in his hand, signaling for him to put them inside.
But Han He misunderstood yet again. He reached out and took the basket from Shi Yu, then piled all the vegetables inside and lifted it.
Shi Yu said, "..."
He was utterly speechless, but he seemed to have gotten used to it. Besides, Han He looked strong, so he might as well let him carry it.
Looking at Han He's hand holding the basket, Shi Yu gently opened and closed his own left hand.
There was barely any pain left. The wound was healing far faster than he had imagined.
Shi Yu followed Han He, who parted the crowd, slowly making his way into the checkout line. Listening to the constant announcements of "WeChat payment received: XX yuan," Shi Yu recalled his earlier speculation.
Could Han He be poor?
In that case, he should pay. Shi Yu opened Green Bubble in advance, thinking of the money he had saved up before and the many "allowances" he would receive once he officially started work in a little while. His mood lightened as well.
Why should one poor person make life hard for another?
Soon, it was Han He and Shi Yu's turn. They had not bought much, and most of it was vegetables, so it was not very expensive.
Shi Yu nodded. He knew this was the moment! He whipped out his phone.
But the instant the cashier took out the scanner, Han He's phone was already held steadily upright on the counter.
Shi Yu said, "Huh? That fast?"
Competing in reaction speed with a combat ability user whose body had been enhanced was rather overestimating himself.
As the payment confirmation sounded, Han He calmly put away his phone, then turned to Shi Yu, who stood frozen with his own phone in hand, and said:
"Let's go. Anything else we haven't bought?"
Helpless, Shi Yu watched Han He turn to leave and hurried after him.
Fine... I'll leave it at that this time. I'll pay next time. Otherwise, I'd really be fleecing my guest.
There were plenty of days ahead.
