Background

Warring States Period and Konoha

Madara fought through the Warring States Period and stood alongside Hashirama Senju at the pinnacle of the shinobi world. Their conflict is identified as a continuation of the struggle between Indra and Asura, whose reincarnations they respectively embodied 205 258.

He later defected from Konoha. His departure contributed to the increasing marginalization of the Uchiha Clan despite its earlier contributions to the village. His attacks on Iwagakure also left a lasting psychological scar on the young Ōnoki 29 193.

By the battle at the Valley of the End, Madara had already begun planning his eventual resurrection. Flesh taken from Hashirama became the basis of his cell transplant and later Rinnegan awakening 202 259 305.

Eye of the Moon Plan

Madara devised the Eye of the Moon Plan to impose his vision of peace through Infinite Tsukuyomi. The plan required gathering the nine tailed beasts and becoming the Ten-Tails Jinchūriki. Ning Feng explains that those without the Rinnegan would be drawn into the illusion 258 259.

After rescuing Obito Uchiha, Madara made him his successor and manipulated him into embracing the plan. Obito subsequently operated under Madara’s identity, including during his approach to Ōnoki. The masked man claiming to be Madara is therefore distinct from the real Madara’s later return 193 259.

Appearance

  • Preserved corpse: Extremely aged, with long hair covering half his face and empty eye sockets 200.
  • Reincarnated form: Restored to his youthful prime, with a burly build, layered Warring States armor, and the facial cracks characteristic of Impure World Reincarnation 201 202.
  • Living form: Long black hair and gaunt cheeks; his reincarnation cracks disappear during resurrection 247 249 308.
  • Ten-Tails Jinchūriki form: White hair, a white forehead-protector-like object, a white robe, black trousers, tall boots, nine floating Truth-Seeking Orbs, and a Six Paths Staff 311.

Personality

Madara is domineering, proud, and dismissive of most modern ninja. He treats the current Kage as juniors and openly challenges their right to judge his strength. Nevertheless, he recognizes exceptional ability: he praises A’s improved Lightning Release Chakra Mode, Tobirama’s useful forbidden techniques, and Ning Feng’s extraordinary power 202 205 253 276.

His confidence is supported by extensive battlefield experience, but it also encourages him to underestimate others. He regards Kabuto as a manageable pawn even after learning of his Sage Mode, while privately planning to dispose of him once his usefulness ends 282.

Madara sees peace and war as a recurring cycle that continually produces hatred. This conviction underlies his pursuit of an imposed, illusory peace. He remains stubborn under pressure and refuses to display frustration openly before a younger opponent 259 260 272.

Abilities & Skills

Sharingan and Rinnegan

Madara’s ocular abilities support prediction, perception, large-scale constructs, and chakra absorption 249 250 264.

  • Motion prediction: Uses the Sharingan to evade Ning Feng’s lethal Wood Release attacks 264.
  • Chakra absorption: Makes Yahiko’s Water Release disappear and absorbs enemy ninjutsu to sustain himself 248 260.
  • Limits: Cannot absorb the natural lightning in Ning Feng’s enhanced Kirin. He also recognizes that absorbing Ning Feng’s volatile senjutsu chakra would be unsafe 253 255.

Limbo: Border Jail

Limbo produces unseen shadows that attack opponents and shield Madara from otherwise dangerous strikes 249 271.

  • Ning Feng can perceive the shadows with his Rinnegan; Obito cannot see them 249 272.
  • Madara uses four shadows during the later exchanges to intercept Obito’s Kamui attacks 250 271 272.
  • Shadows badly damaged by Kamui require substantial recovery time. Obito eventually destroys the last available shadow 272.

Susanoo

Madara is credited with first awakening Perfect Susanoo and refining it to an unprecedented level. His complete manifestation is a nearly solid blue samurai more than a hundred meters tall 250.

  • Uses giant blades, Yasaka Magatama, and aerial movement in battle against Ning Feng’s Susanoo 250.
  • Can deploy a skeletal form for rapid defense when his ocular power cannot sustain the complete form 255.
  • His Perfect Susanoo overwhelmingly surpasses Obito’s third-stage manifestation in size, solidity, and applied ocular power 278.
  • Maintaining Susanoo consumes substantial chakra; Ning Feng’s enhanced Kirin can breach its defenses 253 279.

Fire Release

Madara’s chakra reserves and extreme mastery of nature transformation let him turn Great Fire Annihilation, a Class B technique, into an army-threatening attack 245.

  • His flames threaten thousands of Amegakure ninja and evaporate their massed Water Release defenses 245.
  • Uses Great Fire Annihilation to set a Wood Release forest ablaze 264.
  • Fire Release alone is ineffective against Ning Feng’s absorption barrier, which converts the attack into replenished chakra 254.

Wood Release and Regeneration

Hashirama cells grant Madara Wood Release, improve his physical abilities, and allow wounds to heal 202 249 250.

  • Deep Forest Emergence: Blocks a slash and lifts Ning Feng’s Susanoo 264.
  • One-Line Pillar: Sends thousands of wooden growths upward toward Ning Feng 264.
  • Regeneration: Gradually repairs penetrating wounds, but does not restore the complete disregard for injury afforded by Impure World Reincarnation 249 250.
  • Limits: Madara does not believe his regeneration could replace a head removed by Kamui 271.

Close Combat and Battlefield Experience

Madara’s Warring States experience allows him to read group tactics and evade attacks without relying on his Sharingan 202 245 246.

  • Uses Body Flicker to escape even relatively wide-ranging ninjutsu 246.
  • Overpowers A in a brief exchange and severely injures Nagato with physical strikes 202 247.
  • After Ning Feng-cell fusion, blocks repeated Kusanagi Sword strikes and trades blows evenly with Ning Feng 308.
  • His reactions initially fall short of the specialized spatial techniques used by Ning Feng and Obito. Other counters to space-time ninjutsu require preparation 254 271.

Tengai Shinsei

Madara knows the meteor-summoning technique Tengai Shinsei, whose enormous range makes it suitable for devastating battlefields 182 201.

  • Black Zetsu recognizes Ning Feng’s version from Madara’s earlier use 182.
  • Madara acknowledges its danger to the caster: a falling meteor can destroy the user alongside the target 201.

Six Paths Power

After becoming the Ten-Tails Jinchūriki, Madara possesses nine Truth-Seeking Orbs and the Six Paths Staff. He also has decades of experience with Yin-Yang Release 311 313.

  • Previously teaches Obito Six Paths forbidden techniques and Yin-Yang Release 270.
  • Uses the Six Paths Staff to block Ning Feng’s Wish Sword 313.
  • His initial Six Paths transformation forces Ning Feng and Shisui to retreat 311.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Layered armor — Warring States-era armor worn after reincarnation; much of it is destroyed by Ning Feng’s enhanced Kirin 202 253.
  • Uchiha Gunbai — His preferred clan weapon. Obito gives it to Ning Feng, leaving Madara without the weapon he considers most suitable for himself 255 270.
  • Scythe — Used against Ning Feng during a chakra-depleted close-combat exchange 270.
  • Tachi — A later sword durable enough to clash directly with Ning Feng’s Kusanagi Sword 308.
  • Black chakra rods — Conceals one in his sleeve and fires it during his confrontation with the defecting Obito 275.
  • Demonic Statue of the Outer Path — Summons and controls the statue; its summoning contract becomes a major objective for Ning Feng 271 273 310 311.
  • Six Paths Staff and Truth-Seeking Orbs — Accompany his Ten-Tails Jinchūriki transformation 311.

Relationships

  • Hashirama Senju — Historic rival and Asura’s reincarnation. Hashirama’s cells enable Madara’s enhancements, while his reincarnated body later supplies fighting strength and senjutsu chakra 258 266 282.
  • Obito Uchiha — Rescued successor, student, and eventual defector. Madara teaches him forbidden techniques and uses him to advance the Eye of the Moon Plan; Obito ultimately attacks him with Kamui 259 270 271.
  • Black Zetsu — Aide who claims to embody Madara’s will. Preserves his grave, helps arrange his return, and possesses Nagato to force his resurrection 200 247 270.
  • Kabuto Yakushi — Reincarnation caster and research partner. Kabuto strengthens Madara’s body, but both pursue private agendas; Madara plans to eliminate him after his usefulness ends 201 282 308.
  • Ning Feng / Uchiha Minato — Uchiha descendant, principal enemy, and obstacle to the tailed-beast plan. Madara increasingly acknowledges his strength and later uses his cells to close their physical gap 202 253 308.
  • Nagato — Bearer of Madara’s Rinnegan and intended resurrection instrument. Madara subdues him, forces Rinne Rebirth, and retrieves both eyes 200 247 249.
  • Ōnoki — Former victim of Madara’s intimidation and later allied commander. His fear helps Madara secure leadership, although his commitment weakens after Madara’s defeats 193 202 305.
  • A, Fourth Raikage — Allied leader defeated by Madara when contesting Supreme Command; later requests his assistance against Ning Feng 202 216.

Story Role / Major Arcs

Return and Allied Command

After Ning Feng disrupts the Nine-Tails operation, Nagato searches unsuccessfully for Madara’s grave. Black Zetsu has preserved the corpse and directs Kabuto to perfect Impure World Reincarnation before using it on Madara 147 178 200.

Kabuto restores Madara in his youthful prime without suppressing his consciousness. After reviewing Obito’s failures and Ning Feng’s strength, Madara orders war, defeats A at the Allied Forces meeting, and assumes Supreme Command for the attack on Amegakure 201 202.

Resurrection and First Defeat

Madara escalates the campaign to recover the tailed beasts sealed inside Ning Feng. During his attack on Amegakure, he overwhelms its defenders, subdues Nagato, and uses Black Zetsu to compel Rinne Rebirth 242 245 247.

After recovering both Rinnegan, Madara fights Ning Feng with Limbo and Perfect Susanoo. Ning Feng’s enhanced Kirin breaks through his defenses, leaving him badly wounded; Obito extracts him before the fight can continue 249 250 253.

Obito’s Defection and Retreat

Ning Feng follows the Flying Thunder God mark on Obito to ambush their cave. The conflict expands into a battle involving Madara, Obito, and Kabuto-controlled Hashirama against Ning Feng 254 261.

Obito eventually changes sides. His Kamui attacks consume Madara’s available Limbo shadows, while Ning Feng maintains close-range pressure. Kabuto intervenes through Tobirama, allowing Madara time to recover and overpower Obito’s incomplete Susanoo 271 272 275 278.

Ning Feng rescues Obito and drives Madara into retreat. Madara relocates with Kabuto, leaving traps in the abandoned base and turning to further cell research 279 281 282.

Cell Fusion and Six Paths Showdown

Kabuto’s experiments culminate in Madara receiving a large quantity of Ning Feng’s cells. The fusion lets him return to battle with physical strength and endurance approaching Ning Feng’s own 308 310.

Ning Feng exhausts and distracts him to create an opening for Shisui’s Kotoamatsukami. The technique initially succeeds, compelling Madara to summon the Demonic Statue of the Outer Path and cooperate with the tailed-beast operation 310 311.

The situation then reverses: Madara becomes the Ten-Tails Jinchūriki, forcing Ning Feng and Shisui to escape. When Ning Feng returns as a Six Paths combatant himself, Madara blocks his Wish Sword with the Six Paths Staff, but immediately regrets his confidence once their battle begins 311 313.
