Appearance

  • Early appearance: A very young, childish-faced boy whose seemingly harmless manner contrasts with his ambition 175.
  • Glasses: Regularly adjusts his glasses while researching, assessing enemies, or directing reincarnated ninja 200 224 274.
  • Modified features: Develops pale skin, slit-like serpentine pupils, and facial cracks resembling snake scales after incorporating Orochimaru’s biological material 256 263 273.
  • Clothing: Wears a hood during his transformation and later appears in a black robe 256 281.

Personality

Kabuto is ambitious and deeply dissatisfied with remaining someone else’s assistant. He initially follows Orochimaru because of his power and mysterious techniques, but wants an achievement of his own. After seeing Ning Feng thwart Orochimaru, he briefly considers following and emulating the Rain Shadow instead 176.

His desire for recognition makes him vulnerable to Black Zetsu’s recruitment. Feeling excluded from Orochimaru’s work with Ning Feng, Kabuto convinces himself that his teacher is withholding knowledge out of fear of being surpassed. He defects partly to prove that both men have underestimated him 199 209.

Kabuto combines growing arrogance with an accurate awareness of his disadvantages. He imagines taking the tailed beasts and Demonic Statue of the Outer Path for himself, yet privately admits that Ning Feng could crush ten opponents of his strength. His preferred approach is therefore to prolong stronger fighters’ conflicts while researching ways to surpass them 274 282.

Repeated defeats expose his insecurity. Ning Feng’s sealing techniques undermine his pride in his reanimated army, and surviving Tobirama’s explosive tags leaves Kabuto fearing what Orochimaru and the Rain Shadow will do to him if he fails 209 230.

Abilities & Skills

Impure World Reincarnation

Kabuto’s principal battlefield asset is an army of resurrected ninja, improved through extensive experimentation with White Zetsu vessels and Hashirama cells 200 201.

  • Restoration quality: His improved technique preserves more of a deceased ninja’s strength while increasing the caster’s control 201.
  • Vessel enhancement: Hashirama-cell vessels increase vitality and reincarnation success. His wartime summons are described as slightly stronger than they were in life 200 209.
  • Regeneration and chakra: Reanimated bodies repair damage and possess effectively unlimited chakra, making prolonged conventional combat ineffective against them 207 209 223.
  • Remote command: Kabuto directs battles from underground bases, speaks through summoned ninja, and deploys or retrieves them in coffins 201 238 263 274.
  • Consciousness control: He can suppress a summon’s mind for obedience or preserve it to retain specialized judgment and techniques 218 221 224.
  • Countermeasures: Sealing techniques neutralize his summons; Ning Feng repeatedly defeats them with the Four Symbols Seal 207 209.

Notable Reanimated Ninja

Ninja Use and limitations
Madara Uchiha Reincarnated in his youthful prime after Kabuto refines the technique. Kabuto later senses Madara releasing the reincarnation 201 256.
Zabuza Fights Kakashi with a regenerating body before Ning Feng seals him 206 207.
Kinkaku and Ginkaku Retain their consciousness because Kabuto cannot fully exploit their unfamiliar fighting styles or the Sage of Six Paths’ tools. He briefly takes control of Ginkaku to restrain Raikage A 218.
Tobirama Senju Initially placed under direct control through the Hashirama cells in his vessel, sacrificing some strength for obedience. Later used against Obito with Flying Thunder God and explosive tags 221 277.
Mu Retains his consciousness because Kabuto cannot personally control him well enough to perform Dust Release 224.
Hashirama Senju A major combat asset whose will repeatedly challenges Kabuto’s control. Sage Mode lets Kabuto draw out most of his Wood Release, but does not eliminate resistance 238 273 281.
Fourth Raikage A Reincarnated after death to assist the search for the Two-Tails’ jinchūriki 238 242.
Hiruzen Sarutobi Controlled against Ning Feng, who destroys his body and seals him after he regains consciousness 257.

Sage Mode

Kabuto obtains Ryūchi Cave’s legacy by surviving its trial of direct senjutsu-chakra injection. He subsequently improves the technique using Orochimaru’s earlier Cursed Seal research 285.

  • His Sage Mode is described as perfect and can be sustained for long periods 281 301.
  • Senjutsu improves his control over powerful reincarnated ninja, increasing the strength available to his army 273 285.
  • Enhanced perception makes him especially sensitive to danger 315.
  • His unenhanced bloodline remains a limitation: he believes his body cannot withstand sufficiently intense senjutsu chakra without further constitutional improvement 281.

Sage Art: White Rage Technique

A senjutsu attack combining intense vibration, blinding light, and piercing sound to disrupt an opponent’s senses and movement 307.

  • Particularly troublesome for Sharingan users, whose enhanced vision makes the light difficult to face 307.
  • Affects nearby Black Zetsu despite his unusual constitution and comparatively strong resistance 307.
  • Fails against Ning Feng’s Void, which allows him to become intangible through his Rinnegan 307.

Sage Art: Inorganic Reincarnation

Animates the surrounding terrain. Kabuto uses it to make the ground produce spears aimed at Ning Feng after White Rage proves ineffective 307.

Research and Biological Modification

Kabuto inherits much of Orochimaru’s technical knowledge and develops into an independent researcher capable of improving forbidden techniques, senjutsu, and cellular transplants 199 201 285.

  • Self-modification: Incorporates Orochimaru’s cells and White Phosphorus Snake material into his body 256 263.
  • White Zetsu research: Studies their vitality, chakra imitation, unusual bodily functions, and high concentrations of Hashirama cells 281 304.
  • Madara’s enhancement: Uses White Zetsu research to increase Madara’s physical strength and chakra reserves, then investigates previously unrealized effects of his Hashirama-cell transplant 282 305.
  • Bloodline research: Collects samples from Madara while pursuing the secrets of the Uchiha and Senju, believing Sage Mode alone cannot overcome his natural ceiling 304.
  • Ning Feng’s cells: Supplies cells that strengthen Madara and privately considers their further potential 306 309.

Sensory Perception and Battlefield Tactics

Kabuto inherits strong sensory perception from Orochimaru’s teachings, although he initially fails to detect the concealed Obito 200.

  • Coordinates reanimated fighters across multiple battlefields, concentrating several Kage-level summons against Minato Namikaze 239.
  • Uses Tobirama’s Flying Thunder God kunai and explosive tags to deny Obito opportunities to materialize safely 277.
  • Deploys reanimated Iwagakure ninja to construct continuous Earth Release walls and prisons when ordered to delay Amegakure 306.

Equipment & Research Materials

  • Storage scrolls: Used to carry stolen laboratory equipment and reincarnation supplies out of Amegakure 200.
  • Reincarnation specimens: Takes most of Orochimaru’s available reincarnation materials, including samples from powerful deceased ninja 200 209.
  • Black Zetsu’s scroll: Contains information on the Sharingan, Rinnegan, and part of the stone tablet attributed to the Sage of Six Paths 199.
  • White Zetsu bodies: Serve as experimental subjects and reincarnation vessels; Obito initially provides access to tens of thousands 200.
  • Cultivation vessels: Used in his continuing research into White Zetsu and Hashirama cells 304.
  • Battlefield maps and game board: Used to monitor fighting and arrange the deployment of reincarnated forces 220 274 281.

History

Orochimaru’s Assistant and Defection

Kabuto first appears standing quietly behind Orochimaru during the latter’s approach to Amegakure. He subsequently works in Orochimaru’s underground laboratory, but becomes resentful when his teacher’s research with Ning Feng leaves him on the sidelines 175 199.

Black Zetsu exploits that resentment with forbidden knowledge, equipment, and promises of unrestricted research resources. Kabuto agrees to defect, steals extensive laboratory and reincarnation materials, and escapes Amegakure through Obito’s Kamui. Ning Feng has already noticed the theft and departure 199 200.

Reincarnating Madara and Waging War

At the faction’s hidden base, Kabuto receives access to Madara’s preserved corpse and an enormous supply of White Zetsu. After more than a hundred trial reincarnations, he restores Madara in his youthful prime. Madara praises his work before taking command of the Allied Forces 200 201 202.

Kabuto’s army initially presents a major threat through regeneration and limitless chakra, but Ning Feng rapidly seals its members. Kabuto escalates by deploying powerful historical figures, including Tobirama, Mu, and Hashirama. His control remains imperfect: Hashirama refuses orders to attack Konoha and must temporarily be suppressed and returned to his coffin 209 221 224 227 238.

Sage Transformation and Independent Ambitions

While operating from hiding, Kabuto modifies himself with Orochimaru’s biological material and masters Sage Mode. His improved control allows Hashirama to fight at close to his living strength, although Ning Feng still suppresses the combined opposition 256 263 273.

When Obito turns against Madara, Kabuto sides with Madara and sends Tobirama to stall his former collaborator. The pair later relocate to another underground base, leaving traps behind for Obito 275 277 281.

Their alliance conceals incompatible intentions. Kabuto hopes to study Madara and Ning Feng, defeat both, and become a second Sage of Six Paths. Madara regards him as a useful pawn to discard once his research is no longer needed 282.

Final Campaign

Kabuto continues experimenting on White Zetsu and Madara’s cells to overcome the limitations of his own constitution and strengthen his ally. After Ōnoki withdraws, Madara sends him to the battlefield to buy time for a new cellular enhancement to take effect 304 305 306.

Ning Feng breaches Kabuto’s layered Earth Release defenses and confronts him directly. Kabuto responds with White Rage and Inorganic Reincarnation, but Ning Feng’s Rinnegan abilities circumvent his attacks. Kabuto later watches the strengthened Madara battle Ning Feng 307 309.

After Ning Feng extracts the Ten-Tails from Madara, Black Zetsu attempts to escape with Kabuto and is killed. Kabuto remains alive nearby; in his final documented appearance, his Sage-enhanced danger perception reacts intensely to Ning Feng’s presence 314 315.

Relationships

  • Orochimaru — Teacher and former employer. Gives Kabuto his foundation in forbidden techniques and research, but underestimates his willingness to betray him. Later acknowledges Kabuto’s successful improvement of Sage Mode 199 201 285.
  • Ning Feng / Uchiha Minato — Former village ruler, object of admiration, and eventual enemy. Kabuto wants to surpass him, while Ning Feng recognizes both his talent and his scheming nature 176 209 305 307.
  • Black Zetsu — Recruiter and provider of forbidden knowledge. Helps secure Kabuto’s defection but remains suspicious of his growing independence 199 200 282.
  • Obito Uchiha — Initial collaborator and means of escape from Amegakure. Has White Zetsu monitor Kabuto; later becomes his opponent when Kabuto supports Madara 200 209 275.
  • Madara Uchiha — Reanimated asset turned direct ally. Benefits from Kabuto’s cellular research, while both secretly plan to exploit the other 201 275 282 305.
  • Hashirama Senju — Powerful reincarnated combatant and persistent control problem. His resistance forces Kabuto to suppress him and seek further improvements to the technique 238 273 281.
