| Stage / Realm / Level | Chapter | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Supplants the previous generation | 237 | Ten years before the chapter’s events, defeated Saint Kelin single-handedly. His subsequent swordsmanship duel with Red the Aloof and superiority over Kong in Rokushiki helped establish his era. |
| Established pinnacle of his era | 2 37 447 | Entered the God Valley campaign with supreme Rokushiki, swordsmanship, an already-awakened Dark-Dark Fruit, and all Three Types of Haki developed to Advanced Awakening. |
| Second Devil Fruit: Love-Love Fruit | 7 39 | Ate it at the beginning of the God Valley conflict. Its fear-driven petrification complemented his darkness and Conqueror’s Haki. |
| Third Devil Fruit: Op-Op Fruit | 37 | Ate it while fighting Roger and Garp, gaining ROOM and positional exchanges through Scapegoat. |
| Full awakened release: Darkness Paradise | 39 40 44 | Unleashed his existing Dark-Dark awakening at catastrophic scale. Gained darkness-based bodily transformation and devouring tentacles, but sustained the state by consuming his life. |
| Resurrection without former fruit powers | 446 | Shane revived him two years after God Valley. His Haki remained, but his three former Devil Fruit abilities were gone. |
| Woods-Woods Fruit | 446 | Ate the Logia supplied by Shane, restored vegetation to God Valley, and gained tree-based transformation and environmental control. |
| Temporary restoration of God Valley strength | 446 447 | Shane’s Distort the Present restored his former condition and three lost fruit powers until the following day. Together with the Woods-Woods Fruit, he temporarily wielded four Devil Fruits. |
| Thirty-five years of renewed training | 544 545 | The Woods-Woods Fruit extended his life and supplied energy for continued training. He later displayed darkness, quakes, and a lightning-vine body. |
| Expanded composite physique | 547 | Combined a lightning-filled Fortress-man physique with Woods-Woods and Scarecrow forms, while wielding darkness and Tremor-Tremor power. |
| Temporary godhood | 547 548 | Abandoned control of his abilities and released their Demonic Wills. Briefly became the Blue Planet’s god, accepting the sacrifice of his life. |
Appearance
Rocks has long hair repeatedly compared to writhing snakes. Though smaller than several of his enormous crewmates, his build is still abnormal by ordinary human standards and comparable to Roger’s and Garp’s 2 35 37.
- Clothing: Wears a pitch-black cloak during the preparations for God Valley 2.
- Expression: Frequently wears a broad, confident smile, including while confronting stronger opposition or suffering injuries 2 24 37.
- Combat appearance: His body becomes dark red under concentrated Haki; his awakened darkness produces a more beastlike form with devouring tentacles 37 40.
Personality
Rocks is an openly ruthless conqueror rather than a liberator. He attacks the Celestial Dragons to reclaim what they stole and seize their position, explicitly warning rescued people that he intends to stand above them as well. His ideal world places even other kings beneath his authority 35 557.
His charisma rests on strength, shared ambition, and promises of unrestricted gain. He recruits without demanding a respectable background and accepts that his followers have ambitions of their own. John describes him as a born gambler whose strength, luck, and increasingly enormous stakes drew powerful pirates into his campaign 2 32 87.
His tolerance ends at resistance to his supremacy. At God Valley, he attacks allies and enemies indiscriminately rather than accept a draw or surrender his chance at world conquest. He is willing to destroy his own coalition if that is the price of eliminating his opponents 35 40 42.
Rocks nevertheless acknowledges strength even when it surpasses his own. After his resurrection, he thanks Shane, recognizes his former apprentice’s overwhelming superiority, and gives his blessing to an ambition greater than his own. This acceptance does not extinguish his desire to rule: he spends decades preparing for another opportunity and ultimately accepts death in exchange for even momentary godhood 446 447 545 547.
Abilities & Skills
Mutant Physique
Rocks’s unusual body allows him to possess multiple Devil Fruit abilities simultaneously 7 39.
- Wielded the Dark-Dark, Love-Love, and Op-Op Fruits at God Valley 37.
- Temporarily supported those three powers alongside the Woods-Woods Fruit after Shane restored his former condition 446.
- His physique did not remove the Dark-Dark Fruit’s doubled pain or the exhaustion caused by prolonged combat 37 39.
Haki
Rocks developed all Three Types of Haki to Advanced Awakening before his original defeat 447.
- Conqueror’s Haki coating: Reinforced his blows against Kong and clashed directly with Roger’s and Garp’s Haki 22 24.
- Mass incapacitation: His clash with Roger and Garp knocked out the Marines and pirates approaching as reinforcements 33.
- Physical destruction: Their combined Haki cracked cliffs and dislodged a boulder the size of a warship 34.
- Observation Haki: Claimed he could predict every attack during his awakened battle, though Roger could locate his true body through the voices within him 40 42.
- Limits: Roger’s Haki grew to match his during God Valley. The resurrected Rocks was later overwhelmed by Shane’s still more advanced Haki 39 447.
Rokushiki and Swordsmanship
Rocks reached the pinnacle of both disciplines rather than depending exclusively on his Devil Fruits 37 446.
- Surpassed Kong in Rokushiki and fought Red the Aloof in swordsmanship 237.
- Matched Roger and Garp with exceptionally fast punches, movement, and Haki-infused close combat 24.
- Retained these skills after losing his original Devil Fruits; Linlin still found his Haki and swordsmanship formidable after his resurrection 455.
- Entered God Valley armed with a sword and fought the God’s Knights through both punches and sword strikes 557.
Dark-Dark Fruit
The foundation of Rocks’s supremacy is his ability to devour surroundings and suppress other Devil Fruit users. Its interference forces even powerful opponents to divide their Haki between defending against darkness and fighting him 22 37.
- Dark Hole: Spreads darkness across the battlefield and engulfs the surrounding terrain 15 35.
- Gravitational attraction: Pulls Saint Garling back whenever he tries to escape 7.
- Darkness Descends: Expands and contracts a Darkness Domain; its later use destroys the restored God Valley 23 446.
- Darkness Paradise: Releases his awakened power, producing darkness tentacles, bodily transformation, and indiscriminate absorption 39 40.
- Lineage Factor damage: His awakened darkness injures Roger’s Lineage Factor, leaving damage that ordinary recovery cannot resolve 43.
- Dark Throne: Serves as the center of his final God Valley assault; he merges into it as tentacles spread across the island 45 46.
Limitations:
- Before awakening, the fruit prevents ordinary elemental transformation and doubles the pain he experiences 40.
- Its awakened devouring force also tears at its user. His final God Valley release consumes his remaining life 40 44.
- Powerful Haki users without Devil Fruits, particularly Roger and Garp, avoid its most decisive anti-ability advantage 37 43.
Love-Love Fruit
In Rocks’s hands, the fruit strengthens an ambitious ruler’s imposing presence rather than relying solely on physical beauty. The more others fear him, the more easily they can be petrified 37.
- Petrifies Marines, slaves, civilians, and Celestial Dragons across God Valley 7.
- Complements his Conqueror’s Haki by turning fear and disrupted concentration into immediate openings 22 37.
- Allows him to shatter petrified victims with darkness 7.
- Can be resisted by sufficiently powerful Haki; Roger expels its influence even while remaining affected by Rocks’s awakened darkness 43.
Op-Op Fruit
Rocks acquires this fruit during his battle with Roger and Garp and primarily uses it to improve his mobility 37.
- ROOM: Establishes the area in which he manipulates positions 37 39.
- Scapegoat: Exchanges positions to evade attacks and appear elsewhere within range 37.
- Does not awaken the fruit during God Valley and cannot perform the Eternal Youth Surgery on himself 37 39.
- Its spatial abilities fail to overcome Shane’s defenses during their later duel 447.
Woods-Woods Fruit
Shane gives Rocks this Logia after reviving him without his former abilities 446.
- Restores plant life to the ruined God Valley 446.
- Transforms his body into trees, controls the environment, and creates a wooden giant 446.
- Extends his lifespan and supplies energy, enabling decades of further training 545.
- Later combines with lightning to create a resilient vine-wood body. Rocks can conceal his true body elsewhere in Alabasta and regrow from another location 544 545.
Later Composite Powers
Rocks eventually assembles another collection of abilities, although their individual acquisition is not documented in the supplied events.
- Uses darkness in one hand and quake power in the other while fighting over the Log Pose 544.
- Strengthens his body through the Rumble-Rumble and Woods-Woods Fruits 545.
- Combines a Fortress-man physique, lightning, vegetation, and a Scarecrow form 547.
- Releases the Demonic Wills within his abilities during his final attempt at godhood, defeating Sakazuki and Katakuri in that state 547.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Sword — Carries one into God Valley and uses it against the God’s Knights; no weapon name is given 557.
- Saber of Xebec — Ship aboard which he approaches God Valley with the assembled pirate forces 6.
History
Rise of the Rocks Era
Rocks rose on Hachinosu through repeated victories, gambling, and recruitment. John joined after losing to him and being offered a greater stake: a collective wager to overturn the world. Rocks’s coalition drew together established captains rather than merely raising unknown recruits 15 32.
His victories over the previous generation established him as the era’s strongest pirate. Saint Kelin fell to him single-handedly, Kong was disadvantaged against his Rokushiki, and he also challenged Red the Aloof in swordsmanship 237.
The resulting Rocks Pirates were less unified than their name suggested. Whitebeard and Golden Lion were alliance partners, and Whitebeard openly rejected being treated as a subordinate. Rocks held this collection of rivals together through overwhelming power and ambitions broad enough to accommodate their separate goals 6 157 263.
God Valley Incident
In Sea Circle Calendar year 1484, the Holy Knights and Marines seized Devil Fruits and treasures while Rocks’s main forces were away. The Celestial Dragons intended to use the stolen fruits as prizes in their nation-destroying game at God Valley 1.
Rocks treated the theft as an opportunity to attack the Celestial Dragons directly. He organized a lethal selection battle at Rocky Port, promising the survivors a place in the expedition and ownership of whatever they seized. He also noticed Shane’s ambition and warned him not to die before seeing the new era 2.
At God Valley, Rocks overwhelmed Saint Garling and the God’s Knights, grievously wounded Saint Saturn, and ultimately defeated Kong. His darkness and petrification devastated the island’s combatants and civilians alike 7 18 22 557.
Roger and Garp then joined forces against him. Rocks consumed the Op-Op Fruit to gain additional mobility, but nearly three days and nights of fighting exhausted him. As Roger’s Haki reached his level, Rocks resorted to Darkness Paradise and attempted to devour everyone on the island, including his own crew 24 37 39 40.
Whitebeard and Garp helped open a path for Roger’s attack. Rocks inflicted lasting Lineage Factor damage on Roger, but burned through his own life in the process. As his body turned to stone, he urged Shane to inherit his will and rule the world 41 43 44 557.
Erasure and Legacy
The World Government concealed the battle, removed God Valley from maps, credited Garp with defeating Rocks, and ordered the pursuit of Rocks’s descendants. Shane’s recording preserved direct evidence of the man the Government intended to erase 47 48.
Rocks’s fall released the ambitions of his former allies and crewmates. Roger, Whitebeard, and the others rose into the positions his supremacy had previously denied them. Shane’s rapid growth later prompted repeated suspicions that he was Rocks reborn or a hidden contingency prepared by his former captain 87 88 135 315.
Shane identified several weaknesses in Rocks’s attempt at conquest: insufficient control over his followers, no Ancient Weapons, influence largely restricted to the New World, and the overwhelming depth of Marine and Government reinforcements 105 205.
Resurrection and Separation from Shane
Two years after God Valley, Shane shattered Rocks’s stone shell and restored him to life. Rocks remembered nothing after his original fall and returned without his former Devil Fruit powers. He accepted the Woods-Woods Fruit and used it to restore the island 446.
Rocks challenged Shane to test his strength. Shane temporarily restored his God Valley condition, allowing him to fight with four fruit abilities, but defeated him through vastly superior Haki and physical power. The duel ended their former captain–crewmate relationship: Rocks acknowledged Shane’s ambition and became an independent pirate 446 447.
He subsequently fought God’s Knights in the North Blue and participated in the campaign against the Celestial Dragons. During the preparations for the confrontation with Imu, he gathered at the new Marine Headquarters on Sabaody with other veterans 455 467 545.
Final Bid for Godhood
Despite appearing to settle into the life of an ordinary pirate, Rocks never abandoned his original ambition. He trained for thirty-five years, using the Woods-Woods Fruit’s longevity and energy to prepare for another opportunity 545 556.
During the struggle over the Log Pose, he fought Sakazuki and other challengers, overwhelmed the Supernovas, and attempted to strike Luffy. Dragon intervened and suppressed his abilities with Haki 544 545.
Rocks eventually understood that Shane’s plan required a catalyst for the creation of a new world. Recognizing himself as a willing offering, he released his Demonic Wills and briefly attained godhood. He accepted his approaching death as a worthwhile price for fulfilling his youthful ambition, even for an instant 547 548 557.
Relationships
- Shane — Former rookie crewmate and chosen inheritor of his will. Shane preserved evidence of his existence, resurrected him, and defeated him in the duel that formally separated them 2 47 446 447 557.
- Gol D. Roger — Rival whose desire for unrestricted freedom was incompatible with Rocks’s supremacy. Rocks repeatedly sought to recruit him; Roger instead became one of the two principal fighters responsible for his fall 35 37 43 315.
- Monkey D. Garp — Principal Marine opponent alongside Roger. Garp’s fruit-independent fighting style denied Rocks his strongest advantage, though the Government later exaggerated Garp’s individual role in the victory 37 43 48.
- Whitebeard Newgate — Leading ally and one of his right-hand men, but not an obedient subordinate. Ultimately helped Garp clear Roger’s path through Rocks’s darkness 6 41 263 557.
- Golden Lion Shiki — Leading ally and fellow right-hand man whose independent ambitions survived the coalition. Resented being caught in Rocks’s indiscriminate final attack 40 263 557.
- Charlotte Linlin — Former coalition member who warned Kaido that Rocks pursued his own goals. Even after his resurrection with only the Woods-Woods Fruit, she found him terrifyingly strong 2 455.
- Kaido — Apprentice who respected his strength but suffered under his final attack. Later suspected Shane was Rocks’s backup plan or Rocks himself returned 11 46 87 88.
- Captain John — Recruited after losing to Rocks. Explained the gambling stakes and fragile unity behind the Rocks Pirates to Shane 32.
- Saint Garling and Saint Saturn — Celestial Dragon enemies whom Rocks severely defeated at God Valley, undermining their claims of divine superiority 7 18 557.
- Dragon — Later opponent who stopped his attack on Luffy and restrained his quake-producing hand 545.
