Power Progression
| Stage / Realm / Level | Chapter | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Childhood sword training | 267 | Began wielding a blade in childhood; by his confrontation with Shane in Wano, he had more than thirty years of experience. |
| Surpassing his early opponents | 376 | Retrospectively described as overcoming youthful defeats through training and eventually surpassing former opponents. |
| Prime overlord; awakened Float-Float Fruit | 219 235 267 | Already possesses an awakened Devil Fruit and all three types of Haki. His mature fighting style integrates levitation, swordsmanship, and Haki; the exact dates of these breakthroughs are not given. |
Appearance
Shiki has a mane of golden hair, regularly smokes cigars, and carries two swords 8 24 214.
- Ship’s wheel injury: Shane drives a ship’s wheel into his head at the end of their Wano battle. It remains embedded after his recovery and becomes a source of humiliation 286 301 375.
- Barrier armor: During the Wano campaign, he wears transparent armor created by Kurozumi Semimaru’s Barrier-Barrier Fruit, reinforced with his own Haki 266 267.
- Later recovery: Shane eventually removes the wheel and heals the wound before the Loguetown expedition 453.
Personality
Shiki is an old-school pirate who openly pursues domination through strength, fear, and military superiority. He considers his crimes beyond counting and follows a pirate’s code rather than presenting himself as righteous. His ambition is to gather powerful fighters, defeat competing overlords, and bring the seas under his command 145 238 275.
He is opportunistic and distrustful, willing to use schemes, attack weakened enemies, and sacrifice others. At Hachinosu, he waits for Shane to exhaust himself before demanding submission. Nevertheless, a sufficiently powerful opponent can draw genuine exhilaration and respect from him: Shane’s return after awakening his Zoan makes Shiki delighted to resume their duel 233 237 266 282.
Defeat rarely breaks his spirit. After losing his fleet and awakening with a wheel embedded in his head, he immediately talks of ruling the world again. His pride also makes retreat difficult when he fears public ridicule. Later, he dismisses anxieties about the peaceful new world, arguing that people should enjoy the lives they want—while the Flying Pirates continue seeking battles and adventure 284 301 498.
Abilities & Skills
Float-Float Fruit
Shiki’s awakened Float-Float Fruit allows him to fly and manipulate his surroundings on an island-wide scale, including earth and seawater 8 178 219.
- Aerial fleets: Keeps ships and inhabited islands airborne, allowing his forces to travel beyond the reach of ordinary Marine battleships 178 214 229.
- Terrain control: Raises, overturns, compresses, and reshapes land into lions, fangs, prisons, and moving battlefields 274 278 279.
- Seawater manipulation: Suspends enormous volumes of seawater, creates enclosing water spheres, and drives waves against enemy fleets 214 236 273.
- Fine control: Reassembles shattered stone lions almost immediately and remotely directs his swords while fighting with his hands 273 279.
- Sword enhancement: Extends the reach and destructive effects of his slashes by combining sword energy with his fruit 268 282.
- Rapid escape: His mobility makes him exceptionally difficult to capture; the Marines generally avoid engagements that would cause heavy losses without stopping his retreat 229.
Limits and counters:
- Shane’s Dark-Dark Fruit can prevent him from manipulating darkness-covered ground 235.
- Defending against Darkness Erosion with full-body Haki restricts his use of his fruit 237.
- He cannot directly manipulate Seastone. His Seastone weapons work because he controls the steel carrying it 273.
- Seawater can still weaken Devil Fruit users despite Haki protection 267.
Two-Sword Style
Shiki is described as one of the era’s five greatest swordsmen and its foremost Two-Sword Style practitioner 229 267.
- His long-range sword waves can cleave the sea and threaten islands 29 214.
- He combines flight with rapid attacks from multiple directions, overwhelming Shane even when Shane can foresee his movements 237.
- He can coat remotely controlled swords with Haki without holding them 273.
- His mature technique unifies swordsmanship, Haki, and his awakened fruit rather than treating them as separate powers 267.
- Despite his expertise, he states that he has never attempted to forge a Black Blade 275.
Haki
Shiki possesses Observation, Armament, and Conqueror’s Haki 237.
- Armament Haki: Reinforces his body, swords, barrier armor, and manipulated seawater 237 267 273.
- Conqueror’s Haki: Engages Shane in clashes without physical contact; their collision at Hachinosu knocks out more than ten thousand Flying Pirates 234.
- Combined reinforcement: Uses Two-Color Haki together with his fruit-enhanced blades during the Wano duel 277 282.
- Growth limitation: Later recognizes that neglecting his training after God Valley has left his strength stagnant 380.
Strategy and Fleet Command
Shiki seeks victory through both personal strength and overwhelming numbers 238 275.
- Maintains an intelligence network covering the New World 178.
- Recruits established pirates with strength and ambition rather than indiscriminately accepting followers 211.
- Requires a bounty of at least 100 million Beli for admission to the Flying Pirates at the time of his Hachinosu arrival 214.
- Prepares elevated battlefields to deny Shane access to life force on the ground, while keeping his own crews beyond Shane’s draining range 236 266.
- Uses floating islands as evacuation routes and prepares specialized anti–Devil Fruit weapons 273.
Named Techniques
| Technique | Effect | Chapter |
|---|---|---|
| Chop Wave | A powerful flying sword slash; his opening strike against Shane can cleave a mountain. | 237 |
| Lion: Thousand-Cut Valley | A faster, mountain-sized slash that Shane redirects with a Haki-reinforced Paw-Paw Fruit technique. | 237 |
| Golden Lion: Ten Thousand Chop Waves | A relentless barrage of slashes covering an entire island, leaving Shane unable to evade despite Future Sight. | 237 |
| Lion Dragon Twister | Attempts to seize and reshape Hachinosu; Shane’s darkness nullifies the terrain manipulation. | 235 |
| Lion’s Mane Dragon Twister | Raises towering seawater waves to drive Marine ships away from the duel. | 236 |
| Lion’s Gaping Maw | Forms blades inside an enormous earth lion to kill those trapped in its belly. | 278 |
| Five Lions Return to Origin | Reassembles broken rock into five enormous lions. | 279 |
| Golden Lion Swallows Heaven Gate | Transforms Wano’s borders into a gigantic fanged enclosure, combining terrain manipulation with sword attacks. Whitebeard supplied the name. | 279 |
| Lion-Controlled Tornado | Rotates the battlefield’s fangs inward with Haki and Seastone weapons; also accompanies a destructive spinning sword attack. | 279 280 |
Equipment & Assets
- Kogarashi and Oto: His paired swords, carried during the God Valley battle 8.
- Seastone-tipped steel spears: A thousand prepared weapons controlled through their steel bodies rather than the Seastone itself 273.
- Semimaru’s barrier armor: An externally supplied defense reinforced with Haki; it is not an ability of Shiki’s own fruit 266 267.
- Floating island bases: His Hachinosu force arrives with three islands bearing lion-head ports; five islands serve as bases and escape routes during the Wano campaign 214 267 273.
- Industrialized Sky Islands: In the later peaceful era, he equips every one of his Sky Islands with technological factories and ports 498.
History
Rocks Pirates and God Valley
Shiki appears aboard the Saber of Xebec, preparing to attack God Valley with the Rocks Pirates. During the battle, he destroys the harbor, throws a warship at Garp, and jokingly invites the Marine to become a pirate. He also attempts to recruit Shane into the Flying Pirates, but Shane refuses 6 8 10.
His battlefield opponents include Sengoku and Rayleigh. Although he and Rayleigh briefly help hold back Saint Saturn, they later cross swords themselves. Shiki becomes particularly irritated when Rayleigh proposes taking Shane into Roger’s crew 10 16 24 29.
When Rocks’s awakened darkness threatens everyone on the island, Shiki joins Roger, Garp, and Whitebeard in directing their Haki against it. After Rocks falls, he proposes forming a new strongest crew with Whitebeard, who refuses. The World Government subsequently places Shiki, Roger, and Whitebeard under observation while suppressing the truth of God Valley 40 47 48.
Expansion of the Flying Pirates
Shiki’s airborne fleet grows rapidly after the Rocks Pirates dissolve. Nearly nine out of ten rookie crews entering the New World are reportedly joining him at one point, attracted by the protection and prestige of flying beyond ordinary Marine reach 178.
His numbers outstrip his supply of capable lieutenants. He repeatedly seeks Shane and Kaido, and also values the Kurozumi siblings’ Devil Fruits more than their narrow ambition to rule Wano. During this period, Saint Saturn ranks him as the greatest current threat among Shiki, Whitebeard, and Roger 179 192 214.
Hachinosu Confrontation
Shiki arrives above Hachinosu while Shane challenges Wang Zhi. He offers Wang Zhi and Silver Axe positions as his right-hand men and proposes taking the island if Wang Zhi loses 214.
Shane prevents him from remaining a spectator, forcing the Flying Pirates into the conflict with the Marines. Shiki temporarily cooperates and attacks Admiral Zephyr, but demands payment and openly threatens to seize Shane’s territory as well 229.
After the Marines retreat, Shiki demands that the exhausted Shane submit or fight. Their confrontation becomes a duel on a floating island. Shiki overwhelms Shane with sword barrages and inflicts potentially fatal wounds, but Shane’s newly awakened power allows him to devour his injuries and recover. Shiki keeps his distance from the life-draining island and angrily rejects Shane’s counteroffer to become his right-hand man 233 236 237 238 240.
Wano War and Defeat
For their next confrontation, Shiki prepares an aerial battlefield above Wano, wears Semimaru’s barrier armor, and deploys seawater and Seastone-tipped spears. His strategy is designed to keep Shane away from sources of life force while exploiting the vulnerabilities of Devil Fruit users 266 267 273.
As the battle escalates, Shiki overturns Wano’s terrain into a vast lion-shaped enclosure containing seawater, magma, blades, and rotating fangs. He eventually pins Shane into rock with a sword through his chest, but Shane returns after awakening his Zoan power. Shiki welcomes the stronger opponent, and their renewed clash splits a volcano 279 280 282 283.
Shane ultimately defeats him and drives a ship’s wheel into his head. Shiki loses consciousness after warning that the waiting Marines will attack the exhausted victor. Whitebeard intervenes and takes custody of him, settling a debt with Shane and preventing Garp from simply claiming him for Impel Down 286 291.
Recovery and Elbaf Ambitions
Shiki awakens aboard the Moby Dick to find his fleet dispersed: more than half of his former followers have joined Shane, others have returned to sea, and some have joined Whitebeard. With only two or three followers remaining beside him, he departs to find Garp and vent his frustration 301.
He later attempts to unite the Giants under his leadership and seize Hachinosu. Whitebeard opposes his ambitions, while Shiki dismisses the Giants’ belief in Nika. Shane’s unexpected return destroys his plans, and the Giants subdue his followers 373 374 375 376.
When Shiki attacks Shane, Shane instead gives Kaido the opportunity to fight him. During that battle, Kaido masters Conqueror’s Coating, while Shiki confronts the consequences of having neglected his own training after God Valley 376 378 380.
War Against the World Government
Despite his earlier defeats, Shiki comes to admire Shane’s strength and boldness. He joins Roger and Whitebeard in the battle against the Five Elders at Marineford, attacks Saint Mars, and fights Saint Warcury. Whitebeard intercepts Saint Ju Peter when the Elder attempts to ambush him 409.
Before the Loguetown campaign, Shane removes the wheel from Shiki’s head and heals him. Shiki then leads the aerial forces of the Kingdom of D’s fleet toward the East Blue 453.
Later Era
In the peaceful world that follows, Shiki continues developing his Sky Islands while defending the Flying Pirates’ appetite for combat and adventure. After Roger’s death, public reputation identifies Whitebeard as strongest at sea, Shiki as strongest in the skies, and Kaido as strongest overall across land, sea, and air 498 506.
At his latest documented appearance, Shiki watches a broadcast explaining deeper paths of power. Realizing how far Shane has advanced—and recognizing elements associated with Roger, Whitebeard, and Kaido—he angrily concludes that the others have kept him uninformed 530.
Relationships
- Shane — Former Rocks crewmate, recruitment target, and major rival. Their struggle centers on competing ambitions to build dominant pirate forces. Shane defeats him at Wano, later fights alongside him, and eventually heals his head injury 10 238 278 286 409 453.
- Whitebeard / Edward Newgate — Old rival and enduring friend. Whitebeard refuses his proposal for a joint crew but later saves him after Wano; Shiki once took a blade for him. Their friendship does not prevent Whitebeard from opposing his plans for the Giants 47 291 292 373.
- Gol D. Roger — Contemporary rival whom Shiki recognizes as one of the few fighters capable of matching or surpassing him. Roger later mocks his ship’s wheel injury 236 375 409.
- Rocks D. Xebec — Former captain and a fighter who defeated him. Shiki resents how Rocks’s darkness restricted his freedom and reacts with disgust when Shane reveals the same power 229 292.
- Kaido — Unsuccessful recruitment target and later opponent. Shiki regards being assigned to fight Kaido rather than Shane as an insult 178 376 378.
- Monkey D. Garp — Longstanding Marine enemy. Shiki attacks him at God Valley and later seeks him out after recovering from Wano; Garp mocks the wheel embedded in his head 8 301 375.
- Rayleigh — Swordsmanship rival at God Valley, where they also argue over Shane’s future allegiance 24 29.
- Wang Zhi and Silver Axe — Former associates whom he tries to recruit as senior lieutenants during the Hachinosu confrontation 214.
- Kurozumi Higurashi and Kurozumi Semimaru — Prospective recruits valued for their powers. Shiki initially dismisses their Wano ambitions, but later benefits from Semimaru’s barrier armor during his own Wano campaign 179 214 266.
