Background / History

Early Adventures

Roger first made his reputation in the East Blue, where he won repeated battles and attracted admirers. After leaving Loguetown, he found his first crewmate, Rayleigh, and repeatedly declared that he would turn the world upside down 323.

Unlike captains who built territorial empires, Roger continued traveling with a compact, powerful crew. He held no territory and publicly recognized no subordinate pirate crews, even when outsiders called themselves the Roger Grand Fleet 192 314.

God Valley and the Fall of Rocks

Roger entered the God Valley battle while still young and without his later signature mustache. He interrupted Garp’s attack on Shane, then offered Shane a place aboard his ship after praising his courage in killing a Celestial Dragon. Shane rejected both Roger’s invitation and Garp’s competing offer to become a Marine 7 8.

Although Roger and Garp initially fought each other, they joined forces against Rocks. Roger rallied his crew, declared war on the Rocks Pirates, and attacked with Divine Departure. The confrontation pushed his Haki further, producing Observation Haki Killer 13 24 33.

With Garp and Whitebeard clearing a path, Roger risked his life to attack Rocks. Rocks retaliated by using the awakened Dark-Dark Fruit to damage Roger’s lineage factor. Roger’s Haki could not remove the injury, leaving him with a lasting, life-threatening condition 43.

Rayleigh carried the injured Roger while the crew, Garp, and Zephyr defended their retreat. Roger also heard Rocks’s final message about discovering the truth behind the Will of D through his Voice of All Things 43.

After Rocks’s death, Garp threw two treasure chests to the Roger Pirates. Roger, Rayleigh, Gaban, and their companions secured both and escaped. The collapse of the Rocks Pirates left Roger’s intact, experienced crew in the strongest immediate position among the surviving pirate forces 47.

Pirate Expo

Roger intervened against the God’s Knights, immediately seeking out Saint Garling. Their clash between Divine Departure and Heavenly Punishment split the sky through Conqueror’s Coating. After judging Garling inferior to the commander, Saint Kelin, Roger pursued the stronger opponent 190 192.

The Roger Pirates helped shield the Dragon Emperor Pirates during the battle. Roger subsequently fought Garp while his crew engaged the other pursuing powers, giving Shane’s Black Pearl an opportunity to escape 199 204.

Marine Headquarters later credited Roger with killing Garling, while Morgans reported that Shane was responsible. The conflicting accounts accompanied increased bounties for both crews 206.

Poneglyph Race and Lodestar Island

Roger’s crew seized Poneglyphs from Big Mom’s forces, prompting Shane to treat them as direct enemies in the race for the sea’s supreme position 306.

At Lodestar Island, Dr. Clover worked with Roger’s crew to decipher the ancient records. News that Roger had taken Clover drove Roger’s bounty above every other pirate’s, although the amount was not stated 311.

Roger privately estimated that the damage left by Rocks might allow him another fifteen years at most. He nevertheless remained stronger than he had been at God Valley and intended to challenge the world’s established order. Before fighting Shane, he instructed Clover to join Shane and pursue the eight-hundred-year-old treasure if the Roger Pirates lost 311.

Their battle became an exchange of Haki breakthroughs. Roger demonstrated Conqueror’s Haki fusion, fought with both fists and sword, and completed Black Blade Ace while Shane developed his own advanced techniques 318 322 329 330.

When Sengoku became involved, Roger asked Shane to spare him, valuing the influence Sengoku and Garp had on the world’s stability. Shane agreed that their debts from God Valley and the Pirate Expo were settled. Roger allowed Shane’s crew to make Poneglyph rubbings and leave after Shane declared victory 340.

Roger still considered them rivals afterward, openly warning that he would seize Shane’s Poneglyph in Wano if the opportunity arose 342.

Defeat at Hachinosu

Roger refused to believe reports that Shane and Garp had died and ordered Rayleigh to sail, determined to meet Shane again 365.

After a mysterious adventure and the journey to Laugh Tale, Roger reached Hachinosu to challenge Shane. Their private discussion concerned Garp’s fate, Joy Boy, and Sun God Nika before the fighting began 391 392.

The rematch pushed Roger into another breakthrough, but Shane overwhelmed him and ultimately defeated the entire Roger Pirates crew alone. Roger acknowledged Shane as the Pirate King after a final blow sent him into Skull Mountain 397 399.

Kingdom of D and the War Against the Five Elders

Before sailing alone toward Marine Headquarters, Shane asked Roger to continue his plans if he died 402.

Roger subsequently fought Saint Nusjuro, using superior Haki quality against the Elder’s greater reserves. He later coordinated with Rayleigh and other allies against Saint Warcury, repeatedly wounding an opponent whose resurrection prevented a lasting victory 411 422.

By the fleet’s arrival in Loguetown, Roger was recognized as a captain of the Kingdom of D. His presence reassured residents who remembered him growing from a troublesome local boy into a world-famous pirate 454.

Sky Pirates King and Seclusion

Roger later defeated Golden Lion on Jaya Island and became known as the Sky Pirates King. His victory was especially striking because he possessed no Devil Fruit ability, yet overcame the pirate widely regarded as the ruler of the skies 497 506.

He was publicly believed to have died following an execution at Loguetown. However, he was subsequently shown drinking with Garp and Rayleigh in Foosha Village, living in seclusion and continuing to appear discreetly around the world 497 499.

During this period, Roger’s former crew gave rise to the Devil Pirate Crew, Red Hair Pirates, and Buggy Pirates. Roger also continued training and revealed that his crew had long tracked the City of Heaven through the magnetic-field changes it left behind 499 500.

At Laugh Tale, Roger appeared openly alongside Rayleigh, Gaban, Shanks, Buggy, and the reunited crew. Spectators expected him to challenge Shane, but he instead stood beside him as Shane announced his return 517.

Appearance

  • Youthful appearance: At God Valley, Roger had not yet grown his signature mustache 7 33.
  • Straw hat: Wears it during the early battles, either on his head or hanging around his neck; this also earns him the name “Straw Hat” 24 33.
  • Build: Described as unusually large compared with ordinary people, in the same broad comparison as Garp and Rocks 35.
  • Middle-aged appearance: When his Haki is concealed, he can appear to be merely a somewhat handsome middle-aged man 316.
  • Battle expression: Frequently grins during dangerous fights; his smile is explicitly compared with the shape of a D 324.

Personality

Roger prizes freedom, adventure, and companionship over territory or a subordinate fleet. He refuses to submit to another captain and treats the Roger Pirates as companions rather than disposable followers. His preference for traveling also leads the World Government to underestimate his political ambition 192 314 315.

He actively seeks powerful opponents. At the Pirate Expo, his claim that Garling is too dangerous for his officers is immediately recognized by Gaban as an excuse to take the fight himself. Roger also welcomes rivals who can force him to improve and openly shares discoveries about Haki and Black Blade forging with Shane 190 327 329.

His carefree manner coexists with concern for the wider world. He is unwilling to kill old adversaries merely to remove future obstacles, arguing that decades of rivalry create personal ties. His request to spare Sengoku reflects both affection for an old opponent and concern that eliminating influential Marines could allow greater suffering 340.

Roger’s illness gives urgency to his youthful promise to overturn the world. Although he resists Shane’s ambitions, he is willing to entrust the search for the ancient treasure to him and later recognizes his victory without denying his own disappointment 311 318 399.

Abilities & Skills

Haki Mastery

  • Masters all Three Types of Haki, relying on them rather than a Devil Fruit 13 327.
  • His Conqueror’s Haki can incapacitate large numbers of combatants and, when clashing with another advanced user, split the sky 33 190 204.
  • Fuses Conqueror’s Haki into his arms and sword, treating it as an expression of human potential comparable to Armament Haki 318.
  • Black Blade forging produces a qualitative improvement in his Armament Haki, allowing a smaller quantity to deliver substantially greater power 330.
  • Later develops Haki capable of attacking Shane on both physical and spiritual levels 399.

Observation Haki Killer

  • Uses full-body Conqueror’s Haki to conceal his presence from Observation Haki; he remains visible to ordinary sight 33.
  • Combines concealment with high-speed movement to make attacks difficult to anticipate or evade 33 316.
  • Can maintain the state continuously, unlike Shane’s initially intermittent version 327.
  • The technique improves speed, strength, and defense, making it a decisive advantage over otherwise powerful Haki users 328.

Voice of All Things and Future Sight

  • Hears Rocks’s final message through the darkness with the Voice of All Things 43.
  • Possesses both Voice of All Things and Future Sight as advanced Observation Haki abilities 329.
  • Experiences a further breakthrough in Listening to All Things during his final major duel with Shane 399.
  • These abilities do not replace Poneglyph translation: Dr. Clover still deciphers the records for Roger’s crew 311.

Swordsmanship

  • Specializes in swordsmanship, combining Ace with concentrated Haki rather than Devil Fruit enhancements 312 323.
  • Launches powerful ranged sword energy capable of cutting into Shane’s compressed-air attacks 312.
  • Divine Departure: A signature Haki-infused sword attack used against Garp, Rocks, and Garling 13 24 190.
  • God-Slaying: Delivers a strike whose Haki erupts in three successive intensifications as it approaches its target 327.
  • Continues fighting immortal opponents effectively, though wounds from his Black Blade do not prevent Saint Warcury’s resurrection 422.

Rokushiki and Unarmed Combat

  • Uses powerful Rokushiki and Haki-enhanced punches despite normally fighting with a sword 322 323.
  • Temporarily contests Shane’s specialized fists without Ace, but returns to swordsmanship when he acknowledges that his unarmed attacks cannot keep pace 325.

Limitations

  • No Devil Fruit: Roger explicitly states that he never wanted to eat one 327.
  • Lineage-factor damage: Rocks’s awakened darkness leaves an injury that Roger cannot dispel with Haki and that progressively threatens his life 43 311.
  • Finite stamina: Unlike the Five Elders, Roger remains constrained by a human’s limited endurance 411.
  • Black Blade forging cost: Completing Ace temporarily consumes his Armament Haki and leaves him weakened, despite the resulting improvement in quality 329 330.

  • Marine Headquarters erased Roger’s contribution against Rocks, a distortion that continued to trouble Garp 294.
