Background / History

Childhood and the Rocks Pirates

Kaido became the Vodka Kingdom’s strongest weapon of war at ten. His memories describe a childhood spent as a war machine before being offered up as an object. At fifteen, Whitebeard recruited him into the Rocks Pirates on Rocks’s behalf 3 13 42.

After six years with the crew, Kaido was its strongest newcomer and an apprentice aboard the main ship. Other pirates repeatedly failed to defeat him and take his position. Linlin treated him as a younger brother, while Captain John influenced his drinking habits 3 4 42.

God Valley Incident

Before reaching God Valley, Kaido attacked Shane for disregarding his orders. Shane’s resistance developed into a prolonged fight in the Paradise cabin, where Kaido demonstrated Thunder Bagua, Haki, and Rokushiki against Shane’s Sulong form 3 4 5.

At God Valley, Linlin saved Kaido and helped him obtain the Azure Dragon Devil Fruit. He promised to form a crew with her, but privately wanted a captaincy of his own. His new power did not make him equal to the battlefield’s veterans: Garp pursued and battered him, and an accidental encounter with Gaban and Silver Axe left him injured 10 11 13.

Kaido joined Shane against Sengoku and the forces protecting the Celestial Dragons. He also fought Saint Garling during the wider battle. He invited Shane to become his right-hand man, only for Shane to declare that he intended to become a captain himself 12 13 19.

Becoming Shane’s Vice Captain

After God Valley, Kaido and Shane were captured while asleep and imprisoned in a West Blue Marine Branch. Morley and Sanjuan Wolf broke them out, allowing them to remove their Seastone restraints and escape 49 50.

Kaido initially rejected the idea of serving under Shane. He became furious when Dragon called Shane his captain and resented appearing as a background figure on Shane’s wanted poster. Their shared battles gradually replaced that rivalry with trust, and Kaido was publicly identified as the Dragon Emperor Pirates’ vice captain 51 52 55 144 177.

For a time, Kaido convinced himself that Shane might actually be Rocks living through a younger body. He interpreted Shane’s recruitment of Giants and interest in Ancient Weapons as evidence of a hidden plan. After another confrontation with Whitebeard, he abandoned that theory and concluded that Shane would reach the heights Rocks had once occupied in his own right 87 88 92 185.

Founding the Beasts Pirates

When Shane established the Dragon Emperor Grand Fleet, he supported Kaido’s longstanding ambition to command his own crew. He supplied Zoan Devil Fruits sufficient to create an elite force of more than a dozen fighters, along with ships and weapons. Kaido became the Beasts Pirates’ governor while remaining Shane’s right-hand man 241 242.

Kaido recruited powerful Zoan users and fought Linlin despite being substantially weaker than her. He welcomed their hundreds of exchanges as an opportunity to improve, while Linlin condemned his departure as a betrayal of the care she had shown him 245.

A later flashback follows his recruitment campaign through Mock Town. After accepting the Wild Bull Zoan user who defended his reputation, Kaido ordered the town razed. He then attacked the Marine fleet surrounding his ships, determined to return to the New World stronger and set an example for the other Grand Fleet commanders 553.

Wars Against the Old Era

Kaido repeatedly protected Shane and intercepted powerful opponents. He covered the retreat from the Pirate Expo, fought Silver Axe at Hachinosu, joined Shane’s assembled forces in Wano, and intercepted Gaban’s attack on Shane 203 210 216 265 314.

His battle with Gaban exposed the danger of committing all his Armament Haki to offense: Gaban cut through his dragon scales and wounded his shoulder. Kaido nevertheless continued seeking stronger opponents and pursued Conqueror’s Coating through his later clash with Golden Lion 320 328 377.

World War and Later Life

During a year of campaigning against the Celestial Dragons, Kaido gathered people whose experiences resembled his own. Their dependence on him gave him a new sense of responsibility, replacing his earlier interest in destruction alone 452.

After Shane defeated Imu and claimed the Empty Throne, he entrusted his companions with preparations for future disasters. Before withdrawing to sleep on the giant tree in the sky, Shane tossed Joy Boy’s straw hat to Kaido, who worried that his friend might sleep for eight hundred years 495.

In the later era, Kaido remained active as an Emperor of the Sea and was remembered as God’s former right-hand man and vice captain. He also carried the title Strongest Creature 506 514.

Appearance

• Enormous stature: Too large to enter a cabin barely over two meters high, even while bending down. His spiked club alone is taller than ordinary people 2 3.
• Oni features: Has a pair of natural Oni horns and prominent fangs 11.
• Hybrid form: Develops another pair of dragon horns alongside his Oni horns, with a towering draconic body and protective scales 11 12 320.
• Azure Dragon form: Becomes an immense dragon capable of blotting out the sky above a Marine Branch, moving through the air on flame clouds 51.
• Lightning: His early transformed battles distinguish his blue-white lightning from Shane’s violet lightning 12.

Personality

Kaido values strength and initially treats disobedience as something to settle through violence. Shane’s defiance attracts him precisely because it resembles his own ambition. He fiercely resists being treated as a subordinate, even while wanting Shane as his own vice captain 3 13 51 52.

He delights in dangerous battles and often becomes happier as his opponent proves stronger. Pain rarely discourages him; instead, he seeks life-threatening confrontations as opportunities to improve. His confidence in his dragon scales eventually makes him neglect defense, a habit Gaban punishes 110 144 276 320.

His loyalty to Shane develops through shared hardship rather than intimidation. By the Pirate Expo, concern for his companions can distract him in battle. Later, commanding people who have suffered as he did gives him responsibilities he had never associated with his dream of worldwide war 144 203 452.

Kaido is also an emotional and destructive drunk. At Ohara he sobs while describing plans for Wano; at a later banquet he transforms and fires Bolo Breath into a volcanic crater 62 300.

Oni Physique and Rokushiki

Kaido’s natural constitution made him a formidable fighter before he ate a Devil Fruit 3 5.
