Appearance
- Aged face: His deeply furrowed features reflect his advanced age 152.
- Smoking pipe: Regularly smokes during conversations and confrontations; the pipe also serves as a weapon 159 290.
Personality
Pearl’s overriding ambition is to become Legendary. With fewer than ten years left to live when he meets Dunn, he is willing to disregard political allegiances and risk offending powerful figures for a chance to advance. After an earlier Emperor’s Enfeoffment slots prove unavailable, his desperation drives him into hunting geniuses 152 153.
He is abrasive, proud, and accustomed to intimidating weaker Classholders, but he also bargains pragmatically. Once Dunn offers a credible route to Legendary status, Pearl becomes more cautious about provoking Legendaries and prefers paying Kyle to withdraw rather than risking a potentially fatal duel 153 159 171.
Pearl respects demonstrated strength. His initial agreement with Dunn is transactional; only after personally testing Dunn’s improved power does he bow and acknowledge him as his superior 290 291.
Background / History
Undefeated Proxy Fighter
Before joining Dunn, Pearl spends years fighting on behalf of Legendaries. He completes hundreds of proxy battles without defeat, earning an approximate place among the five strongest level-19 Classholders. His work brings him considerable savings, connections with numerous Legendaries, and life-extending treasures that allow him to approach two hundred years of age 151 153 154 171.
Despite accumulating power for over a century, Pearl remains trapped below Legendary by his Career Path. He considers seeking Enfeoffment from an Emperor, but that Emperor has already allocated every available slot 152 224.
Contract with Dunn
Pearl initially attacks Dunn and dismisses the protection offered by the Legendary Battleship Black Pearl. Dunn halts his pursuit by mentioning Enfeoffment, then claims that his future Legendary Class is an Emperor-type class. A Silver Mirror carrying the Eye of the Firmament’s aura lends credibility to Dunn’s explanation 152 153.
The two sign a River Styx Contract: Pearl will receive an Enfeoffment after Dunn becomes Legendary and, in return, serve him for fifty years. Pearl also agrees to protect Dunn and assist his advancement beforehand, without counting that time toward the service term 153 154.
Pearl’s presence deters the Pirate Kings when Dunn challenges Ronald. It also leads Lilith to conclude that Dunn must have a Legendary patron powerful enough to arrange Pearl’s protection 158 159.
Naval War and Campbell Island
During the war against the United Navy, Pearl confronts Kyle to protect Dunn. After his offer to buy Kyle’s withdrawal fails, he keeps Kyle occupied, preventing him from interfering while the Black Pearl charges and fires its main cannon 171 172 175.
Pearl later saves Dunn during multiple assassination attempts on Campbell Island. His continued presence eventually discourages further attempts on Dunn’s hundred-thousand-gold bounty. When Dunn and Annie travel to the Duchy of Lionheart, Pearl remains behind to defend their most important holding 189 203.
His unusual commitment also becomes an intelligence clue: Eileen reasons that ordinary payment would not explain his prolonged service and correctly suspects that Dunn offers him a path to Legendary status 211.
Submission and Battle with Karagon
After Dunn returns with greatly improved martial skill, Pearl tests him with a pipe thrust. Dunn repels him using blade intent, and Pearl bows in submission. This resolves Dunn’s concern that the stronger, aging Pearl might become uncontrollable if his promised advancement takes too long 290 291.
Dunn subsequently gives Pearl the Tremor-Tremor Fruit to prepare for Legendary opponents. Against Karagon, Pearl uses its shock waves to destroy doubles and fracture Campbell Island. Karagon nevertheless outmaneuvers him with shadow attacks, forcing Pearl to sever his own arm; Dunn blocks a follow-up strike and restores the limb 295 296.
A later attack leaves Pearl with shattered limbs, a torn chest, and nearly half his head missing. An unidentified last-resort ability keeps him alive, and Dunn carries him beyond the range of the battleships’ bombardment 298.
Legendary Service
By the attack on the Twilight Kingdom, Pearl has become a level-23 Legendary. He initially blocks Byron and Hai’er, then follows Dunn’s order to let Byron through while engaging Hai’er. Pearl regards this as his first battle after becoming Legendary 327.
When Raglas unleashes a Legendary Spell, Pearl and Hai’er retreat to safety. Pearl returns to Dunn once the spell ends, reaching him with Hermes’s assistance as members of the Wizard Council investigate the devastation 335.
Pearl later helps protect Annie during her Legendary advancement at the completion of the New Sea Route. During the conflict between the Wizard Council and Lyon Empire, he proposes that Lamia and Alice secretly tear apart the New World with a Legendary Spell to force its powers into the war; Dunn approves the plan 342 372.
Abilities & Skills
Tremor-Tremor Fruit
Pearl receives this Devil Fruit from Dunn and gradually adopts it as his primary offensive power because his original class has comparatively limited offensive capabilities 296 327.
- Shock-wave strikes: White light gathers around his fists before he strikes the air, producing powerful tremors 295.
- Wide-area destruction: Opens a fissure across Campbell Island and later tilts the island by grasping and pulling the air 295 296.
- Anti-double attacks: Broad, sweeping blows suppress and destroy Karagon’s duplicates 296.
- Legendary development: Improved mastery after his breakthrough grants an additional Biological Level 327.
- Limits: Its destructive reach does not eliminate his vulnerability to faster opponents; Karagon still catches him with surprise shadow attacks 296.
Martial Dao True Intent
Pearl has attained martial dao true intent through long practice and immediately recognizes the significance of Dunn’s newly acquired blade intent 290.
- Uses footwork and precise disengagement techniques to survive exchanges with a Legendary 295.
- Can kill an adult dragon in a direct confrontation, provided it does not flee 290.
- Although stronger than Damon, he considers killing him difficult and potentially fatal even within an arena 290.
Physical Attributes and Perception
His foundations come from more than a century of accumulated experience, wealth, and enhancement resources 224 295.
- Possesses Transcendent Will while still at level 19 152.
- Has at least 30 points each in Strength and Agility before becoming Legendary 295.
- Can evade a Legendary Battleship’s main cannon through perception and reaction speed, though he cannot withstand a direct hit 176.
- Can exert substantial pressure on a Legendary Battleship’s energy shield 176.
Smoke and Survival Techniques
- Smoke discharge: Expels a column of smoke from his mouth to delay Karagon long enough to escape an attack 296.
- Regeneration: His severed arm begins regenerating slowly before Dunn accelerates its recovery 296.
- Emergency survival: An unidentified trump card preserves his life after catastrophic bodily injuries; he cannot recover quickly without help 298.
Aura Concealment
Pearl can suppress his aura sufficiently for Christina’s battlefield perception to mistake him for a low-tier pirate Classholder 171.
- Appears silently beside Dunn without being noticed in advance 196.
- Conceals his aura alongside Dunn while waiting in the Twilight Kingdom’s capital 325.
Pre-Legendary Limitations
- Legendary pressure: Divine Rank suppression prevents him from fully using his strength. Dunn’s Conqueror’s Color Haki temporarily cancels this disadvantage against Karagon 295.
- Direct clashes: Superior basic attributes do not overcome a Legendary’s stronger energy and Legendary Power feat, which doubles damage against beings below Legendary 295.
- Military formations: Even Pearl must avoid a fully formed Knight order’s charge; a fight to the death would end in his defeat 207.
Equipment / Items
- Pipe — His habitual smoking implement and a weapon used to test Dunn’s strength 159 290.
- Life-extending treasures — Obtained through proxy fighting; responsible for his unusually long pre-Legendary lifespan 153.
- River Styx Contract — Establishes the exchange of future Enfeoffment for fifty years of service 153 154.
Relationships
- Dunn — Initially his target, then his contractual protectorate and eventual superior. Dunn provides the Tremor-Tremor Fruit and repeatedly saves him during the battle with Karagon 152 153 290 296 298.
- Kyle — Fellow Peak Limit Breaker and acquaintance of nearly a century. Their similar strength makes Pearl reluctant to risk a serious duel 171 172.
- Damon / Blade Ghost — An old friend and fellow Peak Limit Breaker whose abilities Pearl knows well 290.
- Karagon — A Legendary who recognizes Pearl’s reputation and unsuccessfully attempts to hire him away from Dunn; later nearly kills him 163 295 298.
- Hai’er — Opponent in Pearl’s first battle after becoming Legendary. Both withdraw from Raglas’s Legendary Spell before returning to the confrontation 327 335.
- Hermes — Assists Pearl’s flight back to Dunn after the danger from Raglas’s spell passes 335.
