Background / History

Transmigration and the Campbell Inheritance

The original Dunn belonged to the declining Campbell Family. Its descendants squandered their wealth until little remained beyond a count’s title. His parents died at sea while attempting to restore the family’s fortunes, leaving him to work as a sailor for the White Elephant Chamber of Commerce 1.

The original Dunn died of fright during an outburst by the Third-Tier Professional Gannis. A man from another world then transmigrated into his body and inherited his memories. The new Dunn had previously been an ordinary office worker who endured condescension and repeated overnight overtime 1 6.

The original owner’s lingering will initially remained influential. Hearing a sailor boast about killing a noble named Campbell provoked an overwhelming emotional response. Dunn later interrogated the Golden Tangerine’s prisoners, resolving that obsession; its disappearance increased his Intelligence by one point and left the body entirely under his control 11 17 18 19.

Seizing the Black Pearl

Dunn killed Old Quill in a surprise attack, defeated the boatswain Jack, and claimed the Giant Tooth. His takeover nearly failed when Annie Bole and her bodyguard Green intervened. After defeating Green, Dunn negotiated an agreement with Annie and advanced to Pirate Captain 5 6 7.

He renamed the vessel the Black Pearl, appointing Annie first mate and chief navigator and Green helmsman. To strengthen his crew without letting it unite against him, he recruited Hans and five companions as a counterweight to the veteran sailors and used officer elections to deepen internal divisions 9 11 19.

A mysterious Silver Mirror subsequently appeared in his cabin and repeatedly returned after he threw it overboard. Through it, the Eye of the Firmament identified him as one of the era’s mortals with unusually strong potential to reach Legendary 21 22.

Building a Fleet

An expedition left Dunn grievously injured and vulnerable to other pirate captains. Astor deliberately led Jaeger toward him, and Dunn survived the monster’s final attack only because its energy ran out. Two pirate underlings remained beside him despite the danger, earning his appreciation 42 44.

Dunn subsequently absorbed Hawkins and additional pirates into his forces. By roughly one month after transmigration, he commanded four ships, but the expedition’s dangers intensified his determination to reach Third Tier 47 50 51.

After consuming the Vampire Fruit, Dunn challenged Morin at Pulan Harbor. Faulty intelligence concealed how close Morin was to advancing, turning the battle into another near-fatal encounter. Dunn nevertheless killed him, plundered the harbor, and later advanced to Supernova 54 55 64 68.

At Cutlass Harbor, Dunn defeated the local Third-Tier Great Pirates and forcibly absorbed their followers. His fleet expanded to nineteen ships before leaving the harbor. He later established Harman Island as a base and converted his pirate ships into Homies, securing their loyalty independently of their crews 71 72 74 85 94 95.

Pirate King and Old World Expeditions

Dunn prepared to challenge Ronald while improving his officers with Devil Fruits. He also contracted Pearl to serve him for fifty years in exchange for an Enfeoffment after Dunn reached Legendary. After killing Ronald, Dunn secured his place among the Pirate Kings and advanced to Fourth Tier 147 148 153 165 189.

His inherited noble status became a political liability when the Lyon Empire offered to restore his title and gold-mine fief. Dunn refused to join its camp, fearing that abandoning pirate neutrality would bring retaliation from the Legendaries backing the other Pirate Kings 177 290.

In Lionheart City, Dunn pursued opportunities amid the duchy’s impending collapse. Eileen sought his allegiance, Krigon became eager to cooperate after seeing his advancement information, and Dunn helped remove the treasury. When he sensed a Legendary approaching, he ordered everyone to abandon the remaining treasure and evacuate 208 211 214 224.

During later travels, he survived a volcanic eruption while fighting the Red Dragon Sarayes and ultimately killed the dragon. He also survived being grazed by the Holy Lance during the Broodmother battle. Yeenoghu promised him the Broodmother’s Authority Fragment, whose Creation aspect Dunn believed might benefit the Soul-Soul Fruit 242 244 263.

Legendary and Divine Development

After returning home, Dunn accepted ten million gold coins from the Lyon Empire in exchange for the Campbell territories rather than binding himself politically to the empire. Pearl’s genuine submission eased another concern, while Kane entrusted the Minotaurs to Dunn before ascending and being taken away by their creator 291 292.

Dunn’s lack of martial technique became apparent against Damon. He later absorbed Damon’s martial experience and spent more than a year training, developing much stronger blade skills. His Soul-Soul Fruit awakened, and by his battle with Pantos he had become a Legendary capable of combining two forms of Haki coating 281 295 299 317.

His attempt to awaken the Vampire Fruit proved more dangerous. Repeated deaths against Ragras brought him close to awakening, but his failure to embrace the fruit’s blood-drinking nature later allowed its will to threaten his mind. He identified the blood of a Legendary creature as a means of stabilizing the process and viewed Hohenheim as a suitable target 334 363.

As a deity, Dunn created fifteen vampires, developed his Divine Kingdom, and completed his apotheosis under the title Death Overlord. He later discovered that the Devil Fruit Tree could both supply new Authorities and purify Faith Power 388 412 442 443.

His rise did not eliminate stronger opponents: surviving Yi’s all-out strike nearly collapsed his Divine Kingdom. Dunn subsequently concealed his kingdom and researched faith’s influence, emerging when Lyon I’s claim to be Emperor of the Gods threatened divine independence. In his later year-long war against the Gods, he killed deities, seized their godheads and portfolios, and continued pursuing elder divine power 417 432 497.

Appearance

Dunn is approximately 1.85 metres tall. His early crewmates repeatedly describe him as a “pretty boy” 5 6.

  • Vampire transformation: Becomes taller, with elongated pointed ears, blood-red slit pupils, and protruding canine teeth 71.
  • Flight: Uses bat wings in combat 77.
  • Fear Aura: The Soul-Soul Fruit does not physically disfigure him. Instead, its fixed Charisma score causes observers to perceive ugliness, evil, or an instinctively repellent presence 83.

Personality

Dunn is ambitious, proud, and intensely motivated by personal strength. His ordinary previous life left him resentful of being looked down upon, helping drive his refusal to submit to Annie during their first confrontation. Early close calls repeatedly reinforce his determination to advance, though success can also make him overconfident: an assassination attempt after becoming Pirate King teaches him that his regeneration does not make him invulnerable 6 51 189.

He combines caution with opportunism. He refuses to explain his abilities to Morin without a decisive advantage, keeps important information from followers he does not fully trust, and deliberately balances competing groups within his crew. His rapid advancement initially makes slow martial training unattractive, until Damon exposes the weakness of relying on superior attributes and abilities alone 19 60 84 281.

Dunn initially retains moral limits from his previous life. He supports disabled pirates rather than discarding them and refuses to kill loyal subordinates merely to turn their souls into warships. Those limits do not make him consistently merciful: he coerces pirates into joining him, grows markedly harder over time, and eventually slaughters beings across the Main Plane to sustain his divine war 65 74 84 217 497.

Personal loyalty remains important to him. He recognizes that Green’s first obligation is to Annie, spares Christina’s naval followers after receiving her help, and rejects a divine marriage alliance rather than risk losing Annie’s trust 46 288 469.

Abilities & Skills

Career Card and Personal Lottery

Dunn uses the world’s standard Career Card system, augmented by a drawing function absent from the original owner’s memories 2.

  • Receives one draw every Monday at 00:00 2.
  • Can retrieve drawn Devil Fruits using ordinary fruit, as demonstrated when obtaining the Vampire and Dark-Dark Fruits 54 149.
  • Holds the Heaven’s Favored talent as the recipient of a newly created class legacy 3.

Aberrant Constitution

Aberrant supplies the physical foundation for Dunn’s three-fruit build 3.

  • Allows him to eat three Devil Fruits rather than one.
  • Grants Reduced Pain Sensitivity, halving ordinary pain, and Sleepless, eliminating the need for sleep.
  • His early 20-point Stamina grants Supernatural Toughness and Supernatural Recovery.
  • Later development adds elemental and toxin resistance, limb regeneration, and enhanced Strength and Stamina checks 3 54 149 244.

Vampire Fruit

The Bat-Bat Fruit, Mythical Zoan, Model: Vampire Form is Dunn’s first consumed Devil Fruit 54 55.

  • Enhances physical attributes and grants a stronger transformed state.
  • Provides rapid regeneration, flight, improved hearing, sound-wave manipulation, and concealment in darkness.
  • Controls his own blood and that of others; blood-drinking accelerates recovery.
  • Extends his lifespan 55.
  • Forms blood spikes, restraining strands, and protective coverings; he also accelerates his blood flow to increase strength 78 108 242 244.
  • Like other Devil Fruit users, he loses the ability to swim 54.

Soul-Soul Fruit and Homies

The Soul-Soul Fruit grants soul manipulation while forcibly fixing Dunn’s Charisma at 1 83.

  • Fear Aura: Instils fear in those without firm resolve; even resolute observers initially experience disgust. Dunn later learns to control the aura 83 211.
  • Homie creation: Animates ships and other creations using souls. Loyal ship Homies prevent disloyal crews from simply stealing his vessels 94 96.
  • Awakened ability: Grants incomplete Soul Authority and permits him to tear off parts of his own soul to create exceptionally powerful Homies 299.
  • Weapon empowerment: Invests a soul fragment and one point of Will into Night Feather, granting it a Legendary Divine Rank 364.

Dark-Dark Fruit

Dunn chooses the Dark-Dark Fruit partly as insurance against Devil Fruit users becoming his enemies 149.

  • Manipulates darkness and can nullify other Devil Fruit users’ abilities.
  • Black Vortex is central to his intended countermeasures against hostile fruit users.
  • Damage Absorption: Darkness absorbs damage at the price of doubled pain.
  • Does not grant elementalization 149.
  • Dark Hole: Forms a black sphere around him during Sarayes’s volcanic eruption 242.
  • His darkness-based battle with Hohenheim produces an effect Hohenheim identifies as an Anti-Magic Field 363.

Haki

Dunn’s class energy manifests as Haki 52 68.

  • Conqueror’s Color Haki: Incapacitates weak-willed opponents and suppresses stronger ones. Initially indiscriminate, it becomes selectively controllable after Third Tier 52 71.
  • Armament Haki: Reinforces his body, weapons, and even blood coverings; can strike certain intangible beings 68 108.
  • Ryuo: An advanced Armament form capable of penetrating defenses, obtained at Fourth Tier 165.
  • Observation Haki: Detects living presences and powerful life forces 68 97.
  • Future Sight: Briefly sees the future through transcendent Perception and his class characteristics 83.
  • Conqueror’s Color Coating: A Legendary combat ability that he learns to layer over Armament Haki during the Pantos battle 317.
  • Surge: Doubles Career Energy intensity and halves its consumption 219.

Martial Arts and Blade Intent

Dunn’s class supplies techniques, but his later technical proficiency requires additional experience and training 68 281 295.

  • Rokushiki: Includes his use of Soru for rapid movement and feints 54 60.
  • Six King Gun: Obtained upon advancing to Supernova 68.
  • Life Return: Greatly improves bodily control 200.
  • Blade intent: Recorded after his swordsmanship and martial cultivation reach a high level 299.
  • Absorbing Damon’s martial experience and training for over a year lets him wield two blades effectively despite lacking prior dual-blade practice 295.

Animated Fleet and Enfeoffment

Dunn’s class abilities support both naval command and the recruitment of powerful followers 68 153 375.

  • Animated Fleet: An upgrade to Ship Animation; the number of ships he can animate depends on Willpower.
  • Initially requires Dunn’s direct control, limiting its usefulness despite its capacity to animate many ships 68.
  • Enfeoffment Ritual: Listed among his Emperor of the Sea abilities. Its future benefits are valuable enough to secure Pearl’s fifty-year service contract 153 375.

Undying Body and Embrace

At Legendary, Dunn possesses extraordinary survival abilities, but not unconditional immortality 317.

  • Undying Body: Makes ordinary killing extremely difficult. Destruction of his soul or complete physical annihilation can still kill him.
  • Awakened Soul Authority substantially improves his resistance to soul attacks 317.
  • Repeatedly resurrects through Ragras’s hellfire, Legendary Spell, and Finger of Death 334.
  • Embrace: Creates vampires at a permanent cost of one Will point each. After Deification, divine power can replace that cost.
  • Creating fifteen vampires nearly exhausts the Faith Power he accumulated over ten years 388.

Divine Power and the Devil Fruit Tree

Dunn’s demigod card lists the Death Rule and the Authorities of Soul, Plunder, Ocean, Death, Blood, Night, Lunar Phase, Shadow, Sound Wave, and Darkness 375.

  • Maintains a Divine Kingdom and replaces its central temple with the Devil Fruit Tree 412.
  • Can gain an awakened fruit’s Authority by eating it after its deceased host’s fruit returns to the tree.
  • Changes the tree to reclaim only awakened fruits; unawakened fruits instead respawn randomly after their hosts die 412.
  • Uses the tree to cleanse poisonous mortal influences from Faith Power. The process produces new Devil Fruits and has a one-tenth conversion efficiency 442 443.
  • Seeks enough Authorities to eventually attain omniscience and omnipotence; this remains a long-term goal, not an achieved state 412.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Black Pearl — His flagship, renamed from the Giant Tooth. Later operates as a Legendary warship with a devastating main cannon 9 139.
  • Career Card — Displays attributes, classes, feats, and advancement conditions; also houses his personal lottery function 2 7.
  • Silver Mirror — A link to the Eye of the Firmament that repeatedly returns when discarded. It stops Morin’s otherwise fatal thrust over Dunn’s heart and later helps substantiate his claims to Pearl 21 60 153.
  • Night Feather — A transcendent black umbrella gifted by the Boll Family that transforms into a sword. Later receives part of Dunn’s soul, attaining Legendary Divine Rank and piercing Hohenheim’s magical shields 97 364.
  • Guard Sword — Used to block Morin’s spear during their battle 60.
  • Spatial items — Carry valuables and equipment, but disintegrate upon entering the Storm Sea, forcing Dunn and Annie to unload their contents before crossing 244 288.
  • Devil Fruit Tree — His companion treasure, the source of Devil Fruits and a central component of his divine advancement plans 412 442.

Relationships

  • Annie Bole — Initially a rival for the captaincy; becomes his first mate, chief navigator, closest operational partner, and prospective divine consort. Dunn rejects Shar’s marriage proposal rather than jeopardize her trust 7 9 69 469.
  • Green — Annie’s bodyguard and the Black Pearl’s helmsman. Dunn acknowledges Green’s primary loyalty to Annie and does not blame him for acting accordingly 9 46.
  • Hans — Recruited with five companions to strengthen and balance the crew. Becomes one of Dunn’s more capable subordinate leaders and receives a Devil Fruit 11 19 50 148.

  • Eileen — Intelligence chief who investigates Dunn’s unusual rise and seeks to join him during the Lionheart crisis 211 214.

  • Lilith — Married Dunn as his empress to win Bronn over. A later rift separates them, and she does not accompany him to the Astral Plane 469.

  • Evelyn — His daughter, whom he is described as particularly doting on 346.
  • Shar — Proposes a marriage alliance. Dunn refuses, but they agree to remain on friendly terms 469.
