Background / History
Establishment of Root
After Hashirama Senju’s death, Tobirama entrusted Danzo with creating Root as a secret force reporting directly to him. Danzo received broad authority over personnel, funding, and bases, with orders to recruit exceptionally loyal, ruthless Anbu members and train them without restrictions on methods or cost 79.
Root’s first long-term target was Toyotomi Yinglang and the Toyotomi Clan. Its surveillance also covered the divided Uchiha, smaller clans aligned with the Toyotomi, and suspicious dealings with the Land of Fire daimyo’s household. Danzo enthusiastically accepted the assignment, promising to make Root Konoha’s hidden foundation 79.
Appearance
- Southern Army storyline: An older man with a wrinkled, bandaged face, a covered right eye, and a sharp exposed left eye. He habitually leans on a cane with a dragon-head handle 94 98 120 140.
- Fourth Hokage attire: Wears a newly made white Hokage robe and conical hat when departing to command the southern front 106.
- Covert travel: Uses inconspicuous dark-gray clothing rather than Hokage robes during his visit to Hanzō 141.
- Main World, Konoha Year 21: In his early twenties, with jet-black hair, sharply defined features, and both eyes intact; he has neither bandages nor a walking stick 311.
- Rebellion attire: Black combat gear with a ninja blade at his waist 328.
Personality
Danzo equates Konoha’s survival with strong, centralized leadership—and believes that leadership should be his. He regards Hiruzen as weak and overly accommodating, while portraying his own coercion, secrecy, and violence as necessary sacrifices for the village 94 102 322.
His political skill rests on identifying resentment and turning it into allegiance. He rallies clans around unequal casualties and resource distribution, uses public accusations to undermine rivals, and treats emotional attachments as tools for securing obedience. His performance before the reanimated Hashirama includes calculated tears and self-abasement 97 105 120 124.
Despite his suspicion of others, Danzo is vulnerable to praise that confirms his self-image as Konoha’s unrecognized savior. Sai’s fabricated history wins his confidence, while Yinglang’s planted dreams convince him that rebellion is a divinely sanctioned duty 94 137 315.
His willingness to sacrifice others contrasts with his protection of his own power base. He authorizes lethal civilian militarization and kills endangered allied ninja, yet later withholds Root’s strongest personnel from a battlefield he believes Tobirama is using to expend them. He also rejects volunteering as a rear guard because his supposed prophetic destiny makes his survival indispensable 213 220 315 325.
Abilities & Skills
Wind Release
Danzo uses offensive Wind Release and teaches practical wind techniques to the captive otherworld Naruto 109 213.
- Wind Release: Vacuum Great Sphere: Expels an enormous spinning wind sphere capable of blasting the Apostle of Pain into mangled flesh 213.
- Limitation: Damaging the Apostle does not reliably neutralize him; his regeneration and pain-based abilities continue to threaten Konoha’s forces 213.
Swordsmanship and Close Combat
Danzo fights with a ninja blade, punches, evasive movements, and explosive-tag counters 334.
- Defeats and severely wounds Hiruzen while enhanced by Asura’s Cinders 329 330.
- Blocks Tobirama’s Water Severing Wave with his blade and disperses a Water Dragon Bullet using an explosive-tagged kunai 334.
- Lands a punch that throws Tobirama backward, but cannot withstand the surrounding clan heads’ coordinated assault 334.
Dead Soul Manifestation Technique
A forbidden summoning technique obtained during the Main World conspiracy 319.
- Summoned Spirit Bodies retain their living abilities and are immune to ordinary physical attacks 319.
- Each has only one-fifth of its peak chakra, cannot replenish it, and dissipates upon exhaustion 319.
- The same individual can be summoned only once a month 319.
- Sealing techniques, genjutsu, and certain Yin–Yang Release techniques can harm the spirits 319.
- Forced Control: Overrides Hashirama’s refusal to cooperate and compels his spirit to attack Konoha 330.
Hashirama’s Wood Release remains the summoned spirit’s ability, not Danzo’s own.
Sealing, Coercion, and Training
Danzo uses cursed seals and sealing jutsu to restrain the otherworld Naruto, then forces him through instruction in combat, stealth, and survival 109.
- Provides effective practical killing techniques rather than withholding instruction 109.
- Exposes Naruto to Root intelligence and Konoha’s concealed political affairs 109.
- Expands his operational resources through Orochimaru’s forbidden research and reanimated fighters 118 140.
Intelligence and Political Manipulation
Danzo commands Root’s surveillance, infiltration, and assassination apparatus 79 492.
- Builds clan alliances through casualty records, alleged favoritism, and blood oaths 97 102.
- Exploits the daimyo’s fear of a unified Sarutobi-controlled Konoha 98 100.
- Plans to use Hashirama’s presence to pressure Tsunade and shame Jiraiya into military service 124.
- Arranges a false northern emergency to divert Tobirama from investigating his bloodline experiments 158 179.

- Dragon-head cane — A habitual accessory of his older appearance 140.
- Flying Thunder God kunai — Keeps a specially marked kunai in a hidden compartment; possession does not establish that he can use the technique himself 103.
- Dead Soul Manifestation scroll — Studies the technique and orders copies made of the associated runes 319.
Relationships
- Tobirama Senju — Teacher and original patron. Entrusts Danzo with Root, but becomes the target of his public denunciation in the Southern Army storyline and assassination conspiracy in the Main World 79 121 322.
- Hiruzen Sarutobi — Fellow student and principal political rival. Danzo repeatedly seeks his removal; after the failed rebellion, Hiruzen suppresses Danzo’s name and erases the Shimura Clan from official records 94 328 348.
- Sai / Ink Crow — Trusted subordinate and adviser who secretly serves Yinglang’s plans. Danzo accepts his fabricated parallel-world history, while Sai feeds him schemes and conceals enemy movements 94 97 158 209.
- Toyotomi Yinglang — Root’s original surveillance target and an unseen manipulator of Danzo’s ambitions. Uses Sai and later fabricated dreams to deepen Konoha’s internal conflict 79 97 312 313.
- Orochimaru — Research partner and subordinate in the Southern Army camp. Develops reanimation techniques, conducts human experiments, and produces the drug used to militarize civilians 118 124 220.
- Hashirama Senju — A source of military power and symbolic legitimacy. Danzo exploits his reanimated presence in the southern campaign and forcibly controls his Spirit Body during the Main World coup 120 124 330.
- Naruto Uzumaki — Otherworld prisoner presented by Sai. Danzo places him under guard, restrains him with seals, and trains him as a weapon 94 109.
- Hanzō — Temporary ally in the operation to trap Akatsuki’s leaders and seize Nagato’s eyes 141.
- Kakuzu — Hired accomplice in the Main World conspiracy. Danzo offers 10 million ryō upfront, 100 million upon completion, and later the post of Hokage Assistant 322 326.
- Shimura Clan — His own clan, whose members serve and die in Root. Its surviving members lose their clan’s protection after the rebellion, and its records and monument are destroyed 102 348.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Southern Army and Fourth Hokage Storyline
Challenge to Hiruzen
Sai gains Danzo’s trust by presenting a fabricated parallel-world history that casts him as Konoha’s betrayed savior. He also delivers an unconscious Naruto, whom Danzo treats as an otherworld Nine-Tails jinchūriki and potential strategic asset 94 103.
Acting on a plan supplied through Sai, Danzo gathers evidence of unequal mission assignments, casualties, and resource distribution. He secures support from dissatisfied clans and receives a daimyo decree appointing him Hokage, but Hiruzen’s faction remains powerful enough to prevent a clean transfer of authority 97 100 102 106.
Wartime Partition
Simultaneous threats from Sunagakure and Kumogakure force a negotiated division of command. The Wartime Partition Agreement leaves Konoha with three Hokage 106.
| Leader | Position | Responsibility |
|---|---|---|
| Hiruzen Sarutobi | Third Hokage | Northern front; departs with 5,000 ninja |
| Danzo | Fourth Hokage | Southern front; departs with 4,000 ninja |
| Minato Namikaze | Fifth Hokage | Headquarters, logistics, and village defense |
Danzo’s initial Southern Army comprises 1,000 Root elites, 1,000 allied small- and medium-clan ninja, and 2,000 commoner ninja 106. His compensation and promotion opportunities make his faction attractive to fighters seeking advancement 107.
Reanimation and the Rinnegan Operation
Under pressure from Sunagakure’s military development, Danzo supports Orochimaru’s efforts to create an undying army. He then stages a public indictment of the reanimated Tobirama, presenting a book of 732 alleged Sarutobi crimes and blaming his teacher’s succession decision for Konoha’s division 118 121.
Seeking still greater power, he joins Hanzō in trapping Akatsuki’s leaders and demands Nagato’s eyes. He intends to combine the Rinnegan, reanimated soldiers, and techniques extracted from the dead to reunify Konoha by force 140 141.
After the Evil God exposes matters connected to his bloodline experiments, Danzo fears Tobirama’s investigation. Following Sai’s advice, he fabricates a northern emergency and sends Tobirama away with ten Root operatives 158 179.
Southern Rout and Forced Mobilization
Danzo rejects Sunagakure’s ceasefire terms after Sai and Orochimaru advise continued war. Sai secretly conceals the approach of the Jashin Cult’s 10,000-strong Faithful Legion, allowing it to strike the Southern Army’s flank 209.
The attack leaves more than 1,500 southern ninja dead or wounded by dawn. During the fighting, Danzo kills ninja linked to the Apostle of Pain’s damage-sharing ability, but the Apostle subsequently spreads his power to new victims 211 213.
To replace his losses, Danzo orders the registration of civilians aged 16–39 and expanded production of a drug granting Chūnin-level chakra reserves. Despite warnings of shortened lives and instability, he plans to train these recruits for suicide attacks. More than 32,000 civilians are registered, roughly 28,000 for the Reserve Force, while others flee the territory 220.
Main World: Dreams and Rebellion
Manufactured Divine Mission
In autumn of Konoha Year 21, Yinglang uses the Soul Yin Stone to fabricate dreams for the young Danzo. These depict authoritarian victories, the killing of Hiruzen and Kagami, a heroic uprising against a tyrannical Kagami, and recognition by the Sage of Six Paths as a Child of Prophecy 311 312 313 314.
Danzo mistakes the dreams for divine revelations. He begins preserving Root’s strength against Tobirama’s orders and preparing to seize the Hokage position 315.
Coup Preparations
Danzo acquires the Dead Soul Manifestation Technique, purchases Asura’s Cinders, and hires Kakuzu to help kill Tobirama. During the Kinkaku and Ginkaku crisis, he waits for his teacher to be weakened rather than helping him, then rushes back toward Konoha to exploit reports of Tobirama’s death 319 322 324 325 326.
Assault on the Hokage Building
In spring of Konoha Year 22, Danzo mobilizes 800 Root ninja. He first lures thirty Anbu loyal to Tobirama into an ambush and orders their deaths, then attacks the Hokage Building 328.
Enhanced by Asura’s Cinders, he severely wounds Hiruzen. When Hashirama’s summoned spirit refuses to support him, Danzo imposes forced control, unleashing Wood Release that attacks Root and Anbu alike. Root also deploys summoned spirits of dead ninja across the battlefield 329 330 331.
Defeat and Death
Tobirama returns, while Mito and Konoha’s clans intervene. Danzo fights his teacher but is brought down by coordinated attacks from the Hyūga, Aburame, Inuzuka, and Akimichi clan heads 334.
Refusing surrender, he detonates his final explosive tag in an attempt to take his enemies with him. The blast destroys his left arm and mangles his right leg. He dies insisting that he is Konoha’s savior and has no regrets; Kakuzu escapes 334.
Posthumous Legacy
Hiruzen orders the Shimura Clan removed from Konoha’s records, replaces its surname with “Slay Village,” and stigmatizes Danzo as “Group Burial.” Mentioning Danzo’s name becomes punishable as treason. The clan compound is demolished and its monument smashed 348.
Root’s destruction leaves Konoha’s foreign intelligence networks badly damaged. Hiruzen later commissions Orochimaru to establish the Vine Organization with similar covert duties, but without an independent leader, explicitly seeking to prevent another Danzo from emerging 492.
