Background / History
War Orphan and Akatsuki
Nagato grew up as a war orphan in the Land of Rain alongside Yahiko and Konan. Jiraiya taught the three ninjutsu and the ideal of achieving peace through mutual understanding. Believing Nagato’s Rinnegan marked him as the Child of Prophecy, Jiraiya entrusted him with the possibility of saving the world. Nagato subsequently supported Yahiko’s Akatsuki and its goal of changing the Land of Rain 145 154 157 194.
Reports of his eyes attracted Danzō, who arranged an ambush through Hanzō under the cover of negotiations with Akatsuki. Madara’s agents separately cut off the group’s reinforcements and contacts. Nagato, Yahiko, and Konan were trapped at an abandoned shrine by Hanzō, Danzō, Orochimaru, Root operatives, and the reanimated Tobirama Senju 140 141 142.
Abandoning the Rinnegan
The Evil God’s appearance turned the confrontation into a crisis over Nagato’s eyes and identity. Nagato initially insisted that the Rinnegan were his parents’ legacy and proof of his role as a savior. When an attack triggered the eyes’ defensive Shinra Tensei independently of his will, his confidence in that belief collapsed 144 145 146.
Toyotomi Yinglang warned that the eyes could serve as a remotely controlled backdoor and offered Nagato a different foundation: his own Uzumaki vitality, chakra, and an artificially induced Sharingan. Nagato accepted the risk, injected the gene-induction drug, and asked to discard the Rinnegan. Yinglang severed their physical and mental connections, then regenerated his eyes while Yahiko and Konan supported him through the procedure 147 148.
His new eyes awakened directly as Three-Tomoe Sharingan. Nevertheless, he did not immediately accept everything Yinglang represented; while recovering, he asked for time to think and evidence of the proposed path’s sincerity 148 154.
A New Teacher and a Break with Jiraiya
Yinglang’s criticism of the shinobi system pushed Nagato toward dismantling it rather than trying to reform it. He became Yinglang’s disciple in Sunagakure and began developing Gold Release under laboratory training conditions, with Sasori providing technical guidance 155 156 157 160.
When Jiraiya approached Sunagakure on an intelligence mission, Nagato volunteered to confront him. He explained that the three former students had found a new path—not simply joined Sunagakure—and declared that future meetings would be as enemies. He subsequently rejected the Child of Prophecy identity outright and returned to training for himself 192 196.
During the southern campaign, Nagato collected fallen Konoha shinobi as shadow servants and fought Jiraiya and Tsunade. He described his cooperation with the Jashin Cult as an exchange: the cult sought revenge, while he sought power. Despite his hostility to Konoha, he stopped his metal giant and allowed his former teacher and Tsunade to withdraw 210 211 212 213 214.
From Disciple to Imperial Expedition Leader
Nagato increasingly treated Yinglang as the person who had given him a choice rather than an imposed destiny. Yinglang’s statement that disciples were his legacy, not tools or pawns, deeply affected him. Nagato still recognized that his new freedom existed within a framework, but valued having chosen it himself 225 226.
After further training and his Eternal Mangekyō breakthrough, Nagato led the Empire’s first expedition through the Void Gate to Planet No. 1. The expedition established a base, contacted a primitive tribe, and brought its people under imperial authority. Nagato healed a deadly illness, supported teaching practical skills before chakra cultivation, and eventually planned to establish a nation and recruit its strongest cultivators into divine positions 357 372.
On Ocean Planet, he led warships to a central island, claimed it for the Empire, and ordered the construction of a naval camp. The installation developed into Navy Headquarters, initially with a few thousand personnel and more than a dozen warships 403.
Battle at Navy Headquarters
Nagato defended Navy Headquarters against the Six Paths-level Ōtsutsuki Fūshū. His three thousand shadow servants, Monarch Domain, Susanoo armor, and spatial sword attacks could not decisively overcome Fūshū’s strength, speed, and recovery 439 441.
Fūshū’s time-reversal dōjutsu defeated Nagato’s anticipated evasion and allowed a punch to shatter his armor and briefly stop his heart. Nagato later escaped a lethal windstorm through Shadow Body Undying, nearly exhausting his chakra and eye power. He remained ready to fight and prepared Shadow Devouring Slash after recovering enough power for another exchange 441 442.
Nagato survived the confrontation. At a later conference, a container holding Fūshū’s Rinnegan stood before him 446.
Fleet Admiral and Ocean Planet Administration
As Fleet Admiral, Nagato worked with Yahiko to prevent Ocean Planet’s growing population of awakened fighters from fragmenting into rival clans and nations. They assigned Konan to lead the air force and planned three air bases, an expansion to at least two hundred aircraft, and observation stations across the islands 450.
Nagato finalized Akasa, Zan, and Salim as the navy’s three admirals. He also endorsed compulsory control of awakened people: cooperative individuals would enter military service, while those refusing cooperation would be sent to laboratories. He and Yahiko later selected two hundred recruits for Sasori’s Dubhe Battle Group modification program 455 457.
He subsequently participated in the Imperial Council’s preparations for expansion into space, outlining military and security plans alongside the Empire’s other leaders 472.
Appearance
- Hair: Originally vivid red; after his eye regeneration, it becomes dark red with purplish-black undertones. It is described as short during his early training 148 160.
- Ordinary eyes: Violet when his Sharingan is inactive 155 193.
- Sharingan: Scarlet when active; his Mangekyō bears a spiral pattern in the left eye and a Triangular Blade Pattern in the right. These patterns remain visible after his Eternal Mangekyō advancement 291 439.
- Naval uniform: Wears a white fleet admiral’s uniform with more shoulder stars than the other officers present 460.
Personality
Nagato changes from a timid child who places great faith in Jiraiya’s teachings into a restrained, skeptical adult determined to reject identities imposed on him. The discovery that his treasured eyes were borrowed power leaves him devastated, but his decision to remove them demonstrates a willingness to endure extreme pain rather than remain dependent on them 145 146 148 192.
He pursues power methodically. During Gold Release training, he studies damage to his weapons and targets, mentally rehearses techniques, and looks for ways to reduce execution time. He also accepts Yinglang’s criticism when his enormous Susanoo proves inefficient against a stronger opponent 160 291.
His loyalty is selective rather than universal. He remains committed to Yahiko and Konan and credits Yinglang with his new life, but refuses to rescue the Uchiha merely because he now possesses Sharingan. He argues that neither he nor his teacher owes an unlimited debt to the clan 274 275.
His disillusionment with Jiraiya does not become simple hatred. He describes himself as disappointed and later spares his former teacher. By contrast, his imperial administration accepts coercion as a means of preventing another Shinobi World: he supports military incorporation or laboratory confinement for awakened people according to their cooperation 190 213 455.
Abilities & Skills
Uzumaki Constitution
Nagato’s natural foundation is the Uzumaki Clan’s powerful vitality and large chakra reserves 147.
- Supplies the chakra needed for demanding Gold Release techniques 156.
- Allows him to sustain a fighting style combining ocular powers, metal manipulation, and summoned servants 212.
Sharingan and Eternal Mangekyō Sharingan
Nagato’s replacement Sharingan are regenerated eyes awakened through genetic induction, rather than transplanted Uchiha eyes 148.
- Uses their ocular power alongside his chakra reserves to refine Gold Release control 156 160.
- Develops personal shadow-based dōjutsu after reaching Mangekyō 192 210.
- Gains Monarch Domain and Shadow Body Undying upon reaching Eternal Mangekyō 357.
Shadow Devouring Extraction and Shadow Servants
Shadow Devouring Extraction takes a dead target’s soul and power, reshapes them into a shadow servant, and stores the result in a separate Servant Space 210.
- Retained abilities: Servants preserve some techniques from life, including elemental ninjutsu and taijutsu 210 212.
- Deployment: Nagato can summon stored servants to fight as an army; against Fūshū, he deploys three thousand at Elite Jonin strength 439.
- Cost: Extraction consumes eye power. Soul Yin Stones help replenish the expenditure 210.
- Vulnerability: Powerful attacks can destroy the manifested servants, as demonstrated by Tobirama’s explosive tags and Fūshū’s strikes 276 439.
- Shadow mark: A derivative technique lets him attach a faint shadow trace to a target and listen to nearby conversations. He uses it to monitor Hiruzen 279.
Shadow Movement and Spatial Attacks
Nagato combines shadow-based movement with sword techniques capable of cutting space 192 439.
- Shadow Instantaneous Movement: Allows sudden relocation, used both to disengage and evade attacks 192 439.
- Space Slash: Cuts through space-time, leaving a black fissure; can be combined with Shadow Swap for teleporting assassination attacks 439.
- Limit: Anticipated movement does not guarantee escape from Fūshū’s ability to rewind and correct his own actions 441.
Monarch Domain
An Eternal Mangekyō ability that establishes a shadow domain around Nagato 357.
- Strengthens Shadow Servants.
- Enhances Nagato’s speed and recovery.
- Suppresses enemy dōjutsu and chakra.
- Consumes large amounts of chakra when maintained for extended periods 357 439.
Shadow Body Undying
Nagato can turn into shadow after suffering a fatal injury and transfer the injury through Servant Space, briefly becoming undying and indestructible 357.
- Escapes Fūshū’s lethal windstorm and re-forms without wounds at the entrance to Servant Space 441.
- Requires enormous amounts of eye power and chakra.
- Cannot be activated consecutively or immediately reused after an escape 357 441.
Gold Release
A kekkei tōta combining fire, water, and earth nature transformations to extract, condense, and control metal 156.
- Metal shaping: Produces weapons and other metal forms; later becomes precise enough to reshape his special Black Rods 160 190.
- Fusion Technique: Combines metal within range into an enormous combat giant. Its materials include iron ore, ninja tools, and even iron pots 212 214.
- Battlefield power: The giant withstands Sage Mode Jiraiya’s attacks with only shallow dents, though sustaining it places a substantial burden on Nagato 213 214.
- Fragment attacks: Controls the Infinite Golden Brick’s fragments as volleys of sharp golden needles 276.
Susanoo and Shadow Devouring Sword
Nagato manifests a dark-purple Perfect Susanoo armed with a greatsword. After Yinglang exposes the weaknesses of its hundred-meter scale, he develops a compressed armor form 291 301 439.
- Armor form: Concentrates Susanoo around his body for close combat; withstands Fūshū’s blows but is eventually shattered by his time-corrected attack 439 441.
- Shadow Devouring Sword: A roughly one-and-a-half-meter, single-edged blade compressed from Susanoo power 357.
- Extraction upon killing: A kill with the sword automatically strips away the opponent’s soul, body, chakra, and bloodline abilities, converting them into a shadow soldier. Stronger victims retain their combat strength more completely 357.
- Shadow Devouring Slash: Coats the blade in soul-annihilating power intended to sever souls, destroy chakra networks, and render self-healing ineffective 442.
Three Colors of Yin Release and Perception
Nagato reaches advanced proficiency in the Color of Observation, Color of Armament, and Color of the Supreme King 391.
- Supreme King qualification: Of Nagato, Yahiko, and Konan, only Nagato possesses the qualifications to cultivate this color 287.
- Future sight: Anticipates Fūshū’s movements; during the windstorm attack, perceives a fatal outcome ten seconds ahead 439 441.
- Limits: Fūshū’s speed strains his tracking, while time reversal can invalidate the future he has foreseen 439 441.
- Golden Eyes: Uses this separately named perception ability to detect the long-term poisoning of the Uchiha’s drinking water and damage to their chakra systems 274.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Black Rods — Six special metal rods, each roughly half a meter long, given by Yinglang. They absorb energy up to a limit and discharge excess as a controllable shock wave 161.
- Nagato deliberately charges and strikes two together to produce an attack he calls “Shinra Tensei.” This is an equipment-generated shock wave, not a surviving Rinnegan technique 210.
- Infinite Golden Brick — Can enlarge, shrink, smash targets, or explode. Nagato also breaks it into fragments for controlled attacks 273 276 391.
- Soul Yin Stones — Spiritual-energy crystals used to nourish his Sharingan and rapidly replenish expended eye power 208 210.
- Sharingan Gene-Induction Drug — The injected treatment that enables his replacement eyes to develop Sharingan potential 147 148.
- Three Colors training manuals — Yinglang’s booklets provide cultivation methods, assessment criteria, and preliminary guidance for Susanoo: Armor Form 291 300.
Relationships
- Toyotomi Yinglang — Teacher and imperial sovereign. Removes Nagato’s Rinnegan, enables his new eyes, supplies techniques and equipment, and treats him as a disciple and legacy 148 157 225.
- Yahiko — Fellow war orphan, Akatsuki companion, and lifelong training partner. Supports his eye replacement and later works beside him in Ocean Planet’s government 148 154 450.
- Konan — Fellow war orphan and close companion. Helps him survive the regeneration procedure, trains with him, and later takes command of the air force under their joint expansion plans 148 275 450.
- Jiraiya — Former teacher whose faith in the Child of Prophecy shaped Nagato’s early life. Nagato rejects his path without claiming to hate him and allows him to retreat during their battlefield confrontation 190 192 213.
- Sasori — Fellow disciple and technical mentor. Advises Nagato’s early training and recognizes his potential to become a one-man army; later collaborates with him on military recruitment 160 192 457.
- Madara Uchiha — Original owner of Nagato’s transplanted Rinnegan. Remains unaware for a time that Nagato has abandoned them because Black Zetsu supplies false reports 153 224.
- Shimura Danzō and Hanzō — Conspirators who trap Akatsuki so Danzō can seize Nagato’s eyes 140 141.
- Ōtsutsuki Fūshū — Six Paths-level opponent whose strength and exclusive Rinnegan dōjutsu push Nagato close to defeat at Navy Headquarters 439 441.
- Akasa, Zan, and Salim — The three admirals selected under Nagato’s naval leadership 455.
