Background / History

Childhood and the Supposed Calamitous Fate

Shenhe lived happily with her parents before her mother’s death. Her father later handed her over to a monster in a cave, where she survived for three days before Cloud Retainer rescued her. On a subsequent visit home, she discovered that her father had died, the village had been abandoned, and her childhood house had been pawned off and demolished 17 24.

Moon Carver’s divination identified her fate as “solitary star and calamitous bane”: separation from loved ones, lifelong solitude, and repeated disasters. To suppress her dangerous outbursts, Cloud Retainer sought the adepti’s help, and Mountain Shaper performed the Red Cord Soul-Binding Method, sealing her emotions and desires 17 24.

Life Under the Adepti

Shenhe studied adeptal arts under Cloud Retainer on Mt. Aocang, with Moon Carver and Mountain Shaper also regarded as her masters. Cloud Retainer periodically sent her into the mortal world, but her unfamiliarity with money, ownership, and social boundaries caused trouble. The Liyue Qixing suppressed earlier incidents out of respect for her master and sent her back to Jueyun Karst to cultivate her character 17 28.

Her next departure followed Cloud Retainer’s decision to visit an old friend. Given permission to travel, Shenhe initially searched Mt. Aocang for food; finding neither Qingxin nor berries, she decided to descend the mountain and venture farther afield 12.

Appearance

Shenhe is tall and full-figured, with an ethereal bearing and a usually cool, unsmiling expression. Her appearance repeatedly attracts attention in Liyue Harbor, where strangers sometimes mistake her for an adeptus 12 18 19 23.

Personality

Shenhe is wary of strangers and slow to accept unexplained kindness. When Yucheng first offered her food, she insisted that he taste each bun before she ate. She later felt more comfortable with his generosity once he admitted that he needed her help, recalling her master’s warning that people do not treat others well without reason 16 20.

Her secluded upbringing leaves her straightforward but poorly equipped for ordinary social interaction. She tends to seek the simplest solution to a disagreement—often intimidation or violence rather than negotiation. She recognizes problems in her behavior, but initially attributes them to her supposedly disastrous fate 17.

Her cultivation has also made her intolerant of wrongdoing. Before treatment, Archon Residue amplified even minor negative emotions into overwhelming killing intent; this was a contamination-induced condition rather than proof of an inherently calamitous nature 24 26.

Meeting Yucheng and Attempting Emotional Training

Shenhe meets Uchiha Yucheng after driving Treasure Hoarders from her abandoned village. His claim to know her senior sister Ganyu eases her hostility, and sharing food begins to establish trust. He challenges her belief in an unavoidable fate and proposes using Sharingan illusions to help her practice controlling her emotions without the red cords 16 17.

The first attempt recreates her childhood abandonment and triggers a real-world rampage. Yucheng survives for over half an hour using evasive movement, substitution, and clones while Shenhe reduces the deserted village to rubble. Once her baleful energy runs low, she regains her senses, catches the exhausted Yucheng, and exchanges apologies with him 18.

Returning to Mortal Life

Yucheng introduces Shenhe to restaurant meals and arranges accommodation rather than allowing her to sleep outdoors. At Wanmin Restaurant, he challenges her belief that enjoying good food would obstruct cultivation 19 20.

At Heyu Teahouse, she recognizes her own childhood in Liu Su’s telling of The Divine Damsel of Devastation. Hearing her tragedy transformed into a heroic entertainment leaves her solemn and conflicted 20 21.

She then helps Yucheng retrieve the Mingxia Floating Life Stone. Xingqiu estimates its auction value at over two hundred million Mora, and Shenhe transports it into the Feiyun Commerce Guild’s custody 21 22 23.

Discovering the Archon Residue

Further illusion training exposes a flaw in Yucheng’s original approach: even ordinary disagreements cause Shenhe to lose control. Within half a day, she kills or injures 157 simulated people, not real victims. Observing the black aura and questioning her childhood leads Yucheng to identify Archon Residue as the cause 24.

He explains that she was contaminated while resisting the monster in the cave, rather than born to bring disaster. His assurance that her parents’ deaths were not her fault moves her to tears, and she accepts his promise to find treatment 24.

Mondstadt Delegation and Recovery

After Zhongli confirms the diagnosis, he gathers Cloud Retainer, Moon Carver, Mountain Shaper, and Xiao. The adepti acknowledge their misjudgment, and Zhongli supplies two jars of aged Osmanthus Wine as payment for Barbatos’s help with Shenhe and Xiao 26 27.

Shenhe joins an official Liyue delegation to Mondstadt led by Moon Carver. The treatment itself is not shown in the supplied passages; afterward, Zhongli reports that she no longer needs her red cords. Cloud Retainer keeps her at the abode to teach her conversation, since years of ingrained behavior cannot change immediately 28 33 44.
